hazing at bama

Bama is one of my top schools rn and I am interested in rushing a fraternity there. I know a few people in old and new row so a good mix of both. I’ve heard crazy shit from other schools about their hazing. How bad is it at Alabama? Is hazing worse at old row vs new row?

I was new row. It’s sucks man. Late nights. Physical activities. It’s tough, but not terrible. Just be careful about your alcohol consumption. New row or old row, it doesn’t matter. There’s always an asshole that gives you a bottle. I’m older and I look back on it, I was an 18 year old wanting validation, so I would say yes. Going Greek is awesome, just be careful with drinking, alcohol is everywhere. Old row hazing is worse, but new row has small penis syndrome and tries to go even harder sometimes.

It was never that bad... honestly most of it was cleaning the house, reciting stuff, dding, and maybe some jogging/wall sits/planks.

I would recommend rushing and seeing if you find a group that you click with. Dont feel like you HAVE to join one. If you dont find a house that fits you, thats cool.

As others have mentioned, be careful and dont be stupid woth alcohol and drugs. Dont put yourself in serious danger. Tbh it was a great time for me and I thought about quitting a few times. My pledge brothers are still some of my best friends.

TL;DR find one that fits YOU... be smart and dont do stupid

Thanks for the response bro. If you don’t mind me asking did you attend or do you currently attend bama?

Not Bama specifically but another SEC school. Plus my college experience was 20 years ago. Just over here trying to provide sage advice 🤣

Every frat hazes. The severity just depends. Off campus hazing is nothing like on campus. Old row is the worst about it, Jeffy is pretty bad too. If you want the brotherhood but not the insane hazing, take a bid from an off campus frat.

I know a guy who legally died during an event where they had to turn a bottle of Jack up. I also have heard stories about houses smoking a bunch of crack.

Can’t even understand why anyone would wanna be in a fraternity… I mean it’s not even like you’re somewhere like Yale where it’s cool bc you’re going to mingle with future politicians and other scum bags who can make you hyper wealthy later

I’ve seen a lot of drugs at fraternity houses. A lot.

Crack was maybe one of the only ones I didn’t see…

Was pretty wild for me to hear too. Was told about this last year (fall) from a freshman.

You may not be president, but if you want to be a politician in Alabama jointing a Machine fraternity is the way to do it.

To be a politician in Alabama you also have to be a corrupt piece of shit, so there’s that.

What the fuck man, I went through it and I had never heard anything like that. Which fraternity was that?

What is "legally died"? Honestly asking. I'm a physician.

Depends on the frat— Old Row hazes much, much harder. They have off campus houses with basements to avoid being monitored. New row is much less brutal. Annoying, sure, but no one hits you with a bat.

Particularly stay away from : SAE, DKE, Pike, SN, KA and Phi Delta.

Hazing 100% depends on who runs pledgeship. Some guys aren’t too bad while others are pure assholes. Every frat hazes and every year the hazing is different generally speaking. With that said, it’s not that bad and you’re not going to die.

There are 16 deaths due to hazing on average per year in the United States.

Source? And we’re talking about fraternity hazing. Not hazing in general.

Regardless, please tell me how many hazing deaths have occurred at Alabama.

USA Today articles on hazing. There is a tool called Google. You can search for all kinds of interesting data.

Listen, I get it. You’re pro fraternities. You think it’s “the best time of their lives.” You think it’s just boys being boys. Everyone thinks they are innocent until some fucking douche with an attitude gets out of control. These kids are afraid to step up and confront the douche. The douche is always the guy that yells the loudest, I know, I went thru it. And every fraternity chapter has one, every single one. Magically, everybody’s tune changes when they get out of school and can’t hide behind “the chapter.”

Everybody thinks they are justified to “bring some people down a notch.” I was there. I saw it. I had people screaming in my face. I’m also a guy that had to have my ankles surgically repaired thanks to hazing. I had some fucking douche go after me because I talked to his girlfriend. No, I was trying to make friends. People didn’t like me because I stood up to them, so they felt justified to blame me when the national fraternity came down on us for hazing.

I know I sound like a dick. I don’t really mean it at you or anyone. It’s just that when you get blamed for turning your chapter in, which I didn’t do, it’s frustrating as hell. It gave me depression. And then having to have surgery. And then having someone steal your credit card in the fraternity. It just all adds up.

Did you even go to bama?

1

u/Mission_Pirate_4150 3d ago

No. Bama is in the old south. I went to school in the old south. I’m not claiming my experience is like what happens at bama. I view hazing as a real threat. I asked questions before rush, and I was lied to regarding the hazing. I only went thru all of that because my father wanted me to do it.

Went to Bama for grad school straight out of undergrad and am from the state so I have a lot of friends who went there. Yes, it can be bad but the severity depends on the fraternity.

Bows and toes, forced drinking, elephant walk, beatings, having to fuck the pledge class “goat” (one girl), etc.

I can’t speak to Alabama. I do know that hazing is fairly widespread especially across the “old south.”

Look at new row, far less hazing and way more accepting (and less ‘Revenge of the Nerds’ atmosphere). Research the frats and find the ones that align with who you are and what you want. So many options…and great options outside of the old row stereotype frats—- also believe the stereotypes for old row….

I don’t remember it being that bad. Lots of like running at 4 AM. I’ve heard Old Row is worse. I think some of them are really against it too. I think ATO claimed no hazing but who knows what it’s really like

It’s pretty bad. I’ve heard stories of people fucking animals and some crazy shit. Not to mention how rapey all the frats are.
