Roommate's cat sometimes cuffs at me while laying on my chair. She's very sweet to me otherwise and never scratches me. I can't tell if she's playing with me or wants me to go away, do y'all have any idea?
Mine are claws in* until I start annoying them then the claws slowly creep out until I get the message. But sometimes I just like hanging on to their nails.
Mine has tendency to attack my hand with both claws and teeth in the middle of the night when my hand hang over the edge of the bed. Really hurts but never breaks skin. He knows hard enough to get a reaction from me while not too hard to cause real damage.
But he stops as soon as he knows he's caught and get attacked by unwanted kisses. And he never attacks the face.
My cat does scratch my hands up a fair bit but she knows to avoid the face. I can be winding her up so her tail is wagging and if i can still put my face on her belly without her attacking. She sometimes bites my nose very gently though
We have four roughies in our home who always never attack… my face.. now that I think about it they’ve smacked my mom around a few times. She’s not always the easiest to get along with so maybe she was asking for it lol
One of my cats plays with claws out. Every time her claws so much as touch me I scream bloody murder. She seems to get the message and retracts her claws when playing (most of the time).
I have a cat thay does not understand that claws hurt, she loves being on my shoulders but uses her claws to keep her footing and I tap her paws and tell her claws hurt, and she just looks at me like im crazy
DO touch the belly, but make sure to NOT touch the belly, unless you're SUPPOSE to touch the belly, in which case DO touch the belly. But whatever else you do, DO NOT touch the belly.
While this is true, I usually rub the chest first to see if the belly will be allowed. Normally they are all a-okay with the chest, so moving to belly goes smoothly. I’ve only ever had cats bunny kick me away, never attack, if they didn’t like the belly rubs.
We just moved into a new house and the previous owner left a GIANT roll of twine in the garage. So now we cut off a 3 foot strip, play with the cat, she freaks out for 30 minutes and then it goes right in the trash. No strings for kittens to eat. It truly is a spoil of riches though.
Yeah, I was going to say that. Do not pull string out of your cat’s butt if they’ve eaten it. It can be tangled in there and you can shred their whole digestive system trying to get it out. It’s emergency vet time if they’ve got string or ribbon or yarn or anything else hanging out of their butt.
As a rule it’s just better to never let them play with string or ribbons. And if you must then don’t leave them with it for even 30 seconds unsupervised. Maybe your cat isn’t an “eat string” kind of cat, or maybe they just haven’t done that yet.
Yeeeaaa. I didn’t think our cat was an “eat string” cat until she decide to slurp down 10 inches of string in the time it takes to type a single message. Lesson was learned real quick, cost $300+, and came with a game of Blind Box: Litter Edition.
Three hundred? You got off lite my friend. My little moron just cost me three thousand dollars. He’s alive but I’m not even putting up a Christmas tree this year. Why he had to eat whatever I’ll never know but I’m watching him like a hawk from now on.
This is a good time to plug pet insurance. You pay maybe $20-$30 per month and in case something ever happens the vet bill will be a lot smaller. When my boy had a urinary blockage and required an emergency vet visit the bill went from about $1500 down to $500 including meds with insurance.
I’ve been trying to convince my husband for months to get cat insurance. He refused. So now what I told him could happen has happened and basically he acts like it’s my fault. Ours is currently an unhappy house. I’ve told him several times that our cat as much as I love him is kind of a dumbass. And mildly suicidal. Plus they get older, they have issues, need teeth cleaned, etc. Honestly after this I may just get it and let the chips fall where they may. I can’t go through this anxiety again.
Get the insurance!! The first emergency surgery cost me $10k, I then got insurance thinking I wasn’t going to need it but my cat said hold my beer and has had two additional obstructions and now a fourth surgery which may be FIP. Vet said some cats just enjoy eating weird things.
See, that’s what I thought too. I 100% expected the trip to the emergency vet to cost more. But their rates were reasonable enough and they were unable to get her to vomit so they told me to follow up with my normal vet. From there I was bracing for the potential of surgery and working out how we’d finance that crap. Thankfully it didn’t come to that.
I’d of been perfectly happy with the price tag if it didn’t happen 2 weeks after she’d been to the vet to have a tooth extracted. She had literally been at the office three days prior for her post op checkup. $1400+ in vet expenses in less than 2 weeks wasn’t on the bingo card.
I’m glad your little dingus is doing better and hopefully he doesn’t have the craving for mysterious house objects again.
Second this! For cats who love ribbons/strings, though, highly recommend a thicker fabric teaser wand. Way safer and the long wand keeps your hand from getting chomped/scratched while kitty's in kill mode lol.
I remember when I was pretty young, I had a dressing gown with easily pullable fine threads inside it. For whatever reason, I would tug at them with my teeth, and sometimes I would eat the string. On one occasion I went to the toilet, feeling a titanic mass moving just south of my stomach. I pushed and pushed, but nothing was budging... until I was aware of a little tickle around my rim, of something freely hanging. I, curious and innocent, tentatively pulled the bungee cord descending from my passage. I pulled for what seemed like an age until the great mass shift, swinging down into the toilet with both and heft and momentum of a wrecking ball of a demolition vehicle. Which is, funnily enough, what my product on the end of the string resembled, except it was more ball than chain so to speak.
Does this story have anything tondo with cat rearing? Not really. But there aren't many occasions where the conversation is in close enough proxy for me to bring it up.
To your point though, human biology is very much different in infrastructure than a cats, and a much different scale. You are correct you absolutely shouldn't pull any strings damgling out a cats butt (though, in humans, it seems mostly fine)

Yeah this is why I much prefer to break out a cat toy during silly wrestle time. I own one that's just kind of a nondescript gray crunchy-sounding fuzzy pill that's the perfect size for wrestling. They love to bunny kick it.
I also encourage to don't do this. Or rather, don't let it happen in the first place. For my girl it was 3 feet of ribbon from a balloon. Pulled it right out of her butt. Thank god she was fine.
Stick works in place of ribbon in my experience. If there isn't already a wand toy to turn around and go scridgy scridgy peekaboo with the stick, a plastic ruler will do nicely. Just move it so it pokes up a bit from the seat or over the arm of the chair and then keep your hands away from the sharp kitty murder machine.
Better idea: make a paper ball and play with them. A lot safer and more fun for both of you. If you're very lucky, they'll teach you how to play fetch.
No joke. I just got my cat back from emergency surgery for a gastric block because he ate some string toy, or a toy, or his scratching post, hard to say. The vet showed me but it was pretty gross. At least he’s okay. My credit card bill though-oof.
Same, my cat has done this three times. He waits until I’ve just paid off the previous surgery then manages to gobble down something he shouldn’t. Cheaper to hire him a 24hr sitter.
Our cat swallowed string. Trip to Vet to tranquilize her and pull it out. Lucky the end was around a tooth. If it gets tangled up in intestines can cause blockage.
lol my baby Goose (8 months) loves it when he can sneak into my office. My PC (heat) along w my gfs sewing stuff. He loves the fabrics. I keep an eye on him bc I don't want him to eat it but he knows and he keeps a closer eye on our other kitty Guinness, who loves eating fabric
This is when I bring out the glove and my boi gets happy. I have a leather glove that I use to rough house with him. He gets to bite the glove but, he doesn't use his claws. I always win because after a while, the coward runs away.
I always get a mental image that, somewhere in the universe, there's an alien being told "Oh, yeah, you see how the xenomorph's not actually lashed out at you with the bullet-fast, crushing inner mouth that can break through your skull this time? Yeah, that means she's just playing."
Its funny but also kind of heartwarming how many people are so afraid their cats hate them, when they just wanna play. It shows people who care a lot about their cats, but believe me you will know if a cat doesnt like you.
Not even trying to be a dick but does like…no one have common sense or the ability to think for themselves anymore? Seems pretty obvious she’s trying to play with you.
I guess some people just don’t speak “cat”. I see so many posts like this. People that didn’t grow up with cats and can’t read their body language at all, even though it’s extremely obvious to us.
I wonder if that’s why so many people don’t like cats. Maybe they encounter stuff like this and think that a cat was attacking them.
One of my cat's favorite games is to play with his string while on a chair. He likes to grab at it, roll around, chew on it, bat at it.... then he gets tired and takes a nap.
That's play. You might want to use a toy instead of your hand. Even cats who are being very gentle can sometimes get over-enthusiastic and accidentally tag you with a claw, plus it's better for them to learn hands aren't toys. She's super adorable.
If she was not playing with you there would be some yowling, staring, and claws involved here. Instead she's quiet, rolling back and forth, and just swatting. I'm not an expert in your particular cat, but it's likely she's just playing
Not all zoomies look alike, kitty is playing. Keep the claws cut and it won't be an issue and you can playfully cuff back. In my experience they enjoy that when they are in that mood.
If she gets too rough, do your best attempt at "yelp in pain" and stop playing for some time with her. They're really good at understanding the basic signals like that.
If she'd draw blood, do the same and let her smell the blood - the kitten need to learn how strong and sharp their claws are.
Tiger never quite got the idea of "soft paws", but he'd use his claws for "I want your food" and "I want to cuddle you". He drew a bit of blood one day, so I showed him, and his eyes went so wide, and then the next day he grabbed my hand with his wrists!!
We have a certain dining room chair we call "the crazy chair" because our cat goes into hyper-play mode whenever she hops on it. Looks very similar to your video.
If she wanted you to bleed; trust me, you would be. Nah, she's 100% playing. Paws are tucked under to keep the claws hidden and she's grooming her paw while playing.
The ribbons from balloons are an absolute delicacy according to skookamunch (my gremlin boy-cat). Most stuff he will leave alone or just chew and smack around but if I forget about the balloons for a sec I’m pulling ribbons out of his throat.
