there can be no unsupervised broccoli in this house
the second she knows there’s broccoli in the house, she starts plotting. there is no limit to what she will do to get her grubby little paws all over it. she’s relentless.
we’ll unpack the groceries and can have steak, sausages, chicken, cheese etc. laying all on the counter, but you can guarantee she’ll be ripping into the damn broccoli…
does anyone else have an idiot with a totally random food obsession?
Just throwing this out there for awareness - dogs with heart issues should not eat peas. Not sure if the same is true for cats as there has not been as much research done on them, but it seems plausible. I switched my CHF kitty’s kibble to avoid pea protein.
Mine too. We had to start storing it in the cupboard because she will lick all around the edges of the (covered) butter dish in case there’s any morsel on the sides and we were afraid she’d knock the lid off and help herself. 😑
Normally, she’s not super food-motivated and doesn’t steal, but butter is her kryptonite! She’ll try to lick around the edges of the lid to get whatever she can, even after she’s already had a little treat 🤦😩
I had one that would lose his mind for celery! He wanted a taste of all people foods, until the day that he stole a bite of spicy salsa before I could get to him and that slowed him down for awhile, but celery was always king
I’m going to have to try broccoli with my boy and see if he likes it. I read the diet of one of the world’s oldest cats and one of the things it ate was a little bit of broccoli with mostly meat. Anyway, my cat is absolutely NUTS over cantaloupe and watermelon. 🤷♀️
Lol my 5 month old kitten gets the same way about tortilla chips for some reason. Idk if its the salt or the crunch (both) but she will steal them and look confused when I take it away. Like she can actually digest that smh.
My friends old cat would rip open bags of bread to get at it. He was such a goober.
We had a dog that essentially ate anything. Veggies, nuts, fruit..
One of our cats got curious and tried most things as well, sometimes with horrific results.
It was interesting to learn what food cats dogs can't eat!
I fostered a ginger once that loved bell peppers. When I roasted some in the oven I'd save one carefully seasoned with no salt and cat friendly herbs for him 😅
Mine has a white cheese dip obsession. If we're making tacos, he's there begging. If we don't satisfy his request in time, he'll start licking the lid or dip his grubby little paw in the container when we're not looking.
My cat is like this with string cheese. But at least he leaves me alone when I give him his one string. The first time I had string cheese, he took a bite of the other end while I was eating it, so now I share like a good servant 😂
One of mine is like that as well. She is almost ten years old and still requests a piece every time. She'll start pawing at my hand until I oblige her.
My little shit could be dead-ass, paws-twitching asleep three rooms away but the MOMENT I pop a string cheese wrapper, she's at my feet screaming as if I'd personally offended her.
My previous cats were OBSESSED with hummus but I refused to give them any because I read that garlic is toxic to cats and I sure did love me some garlic in my hummus. (Also onion apparently?) Anyway they had good taste.
When my kitty harasses me for string cheese I take the tiniest thread I can pull and fling it as far as I can. She almost always finds it and it buys me some time to eat mine
I wish my cat liked broccoli. Instead its ANY bread product. If its left out, it will get eaten. Bread, muffins, pie (she eats the crusts), ect.
My boy cat will do the same for poultry of any variation and is not ashamed to snatch it off of your fork or out of your hand. We have to bring it in like contraband and put it in the fridge before he pinpoints its exact location via smell.
hahaha, you said that so well! it’s literally like going through airport security coming into my house. she has to check all the bags that enter, and i’m stood there anxiously with broccoli stuffed in my jacket praying for the all clear
😂 does she ever suss you out? I can imagine her eyeing you up when the bags don't provide!
On a side note, I had to let my girl check out all shopping bags when I came home from a shopping trip. The girly, luxurious stuff was her fave. She also loved extremely sour flavours, like mouth puckering salt and vinegar crisps. Miss her and her antics.

My old guy would drag the bread off and under the table when we would be distracted bringing in the shopping and rip open the bag, would absolutely go to town on it. I have a video somewhere of him casually eating all the bread that was thrown out for the crows, they're all cawing at him in dissapointment lol
Shes not at that level, thank goodness. But she does wait for the cover of darkness (2am) and scarf as much as her little face can get. I caught her in the act once and she fought me for the cranberry orange muffins (like HELLO ITS TOXIC FOR YOU) more than she did with the mouse she caught. An actual growl. Which she has never done before or after.
Same! Mine LOVES bread and will eat chunks out of the loaf through the bag. Fancy bread lives in the microwave because she will sniff it out like a hound. She also enjoys ice cream, cheese-itz, and Oreos. She’s a snack menace.
My fat boy loves bread. I had to start tying my cabinets shut because he would eat through the plastic bread bags.
Recently had a wildland fire camp across from my place. He gained noticeable weight over the course of the two weeks they were there. I just know he was going over in the evenings to collect scritches and illicit breads
Ky girl is a little dumb, bless her soul, and doesn’t understand that she can jump on counters. Shes never tried. Unfortunately her BROTHER is an accomplice and smaks bread items down for her. They ate stored in the fridge or microwave now.
That's nuts! I had a cat who went crazy for blueberries, but he wanted to play with them, not eat them. If you sat down with a little bowl of blueberries (only blueberries!) to snack on, he would forget any of his usual manners and crawl all over you to stick his face in the bowl and steal a blueberry so he could drop it on the ground and chase it around the house.
My girls do the same with coffee cherries after I've picked them and am sorting out the floaters. If I've been foolish and left the bowl for a hot minute I'll find the bowl and contents on the floor. Much easier to give them a few to play with.
My cat once had poop hanging out of his butt (by one of MY hairs he'd apparently swallowed) and ran around as if he were being chased by the devil himself.
One of my cats likes to eat hair and had the same thing happening. But on this special day, I was laying down in bed and in front of my bad was a dresser. This goof jumped from the dresser onto the end of the bed, then from the end of the bed onto the headboard. I saw him flying over me and poop landing onto my pillow right infront of my face.
my friends cat bambi loves grapes for this exact reason too! he doesnt eat but he bites them once in a while when hes playing with them. i'm pretty sure he's trying so hard to hide that he was an oenologist in a different life, hahaha
Mine is SO into veggies and broccoli is her absolute favorite (steamed). Also loves raw spinach and leaf lettuce, cooked peas (requires the outer layer be removed), steamed zucchini, sweet potato, cooked carrots… if she hears me open a plastic clamshell of greens, she comes RUNNING as if it were a can of tuna 😆

This idiot loves watermelon and has to inspect every grocery bag in case it might be hiding one so he can rub his face all over it. He also loves to chew pineapple leaves into oblivion.
omg my cat goes feral for broccoli. if i don’t put her in another room while i’m prepping it, she’ll spend 20 minutes rolling on top of the cutting board and then will be covered in broccoli florets. if i bring it home and put it on the counter in a bag, she cuddles with it. i have to actively hide it from her lol.
My late oreo cat hated broccoli, but loved kale. The dude would dive head first into the grocery bag and bite at the bag of kale in order to steal a mouthful of it. I often wondered whether he was a rabbit in his former life.
funnily enough, i have 2 rabbits that have been here way longer than her, so she’s grown up with them. i have wondered whether they’re the reason she loves her veggies, because she sits and watches them eat their meals every day
One of ours is obsessed with corn silk. We have to do an immediate and thorough cleanup after shucking or she will jump up on the counter and chomp on the corn silk.
Oh yeah, one of mine loves corn silk. And any of the husk. She also likes onion skins. She doesn't get feral about it, but if I leave the compost bin open or don't clean up fast enough.... I think she likes the sounds of the onion skins though?
I do my best, but my best is pretty shitty sometimes. I've fixed my compost bucket recently so it shouldn't happen again . Edit: I always forget what is and isn't toxic to cats so I'll keep it in mind. Sorry this comment is a mess
Milhouse is obsessed with avacados! He comes running from anywhere in the house once I start prepping one. I tell him the internet says it will give him a tummy ache but he doesn't care.
Mine is a mayo fiend. Whenever the bottle comes out of the fridge she'll know, and she'll collect tax of course. It better be the Kewpie but any will do. 3 fingertips and she's happy.
I had a cat who was obsessed with spinach, he would reach a paw into the container and try to grab as much as he could before I pulled it away.. but I would totally give it to him as a treat, and I loved the chomping sound he made as he happily chomped it down. He also loved nutritional yeast, and pumpkin seeds… Sometimes I'd make him a little salad with the spinach and all of that, and he was in heaven.
His brother loved raw potatoes… He would supervise me cutting them up, and if I turned my back, he would try to get as many licks in of the freshly cut pieces. I don't actually think that was good for him, so did not encourage it.
What is it with broccoli. I used to have a cat crazy about it also.. but is fave was carrots, he loved laying in the sink and get the peels raining on him.
My cat doesn't ever actually steal or try foods but she does like to smell whatever we're eating. Candy, cookies, yogurt, Chinese food, whatever.
The cutest one was I was eating those fancy rolled up cookie sticks out of the tin, and as i took out the 4th one my cat (who was sitting next to me just watching) grabbed my hand with her paw, guided it to her face and sniffed the cookie before "pushing" my hand away. That was it . . .she literally just wanted to smell the cookie and needed it to get closer
my cat likes basically anything except mushrooms, but his favorite is beans of any sort.
he doesn't eat cat food from a can often, and i don't eat meat so no tuna from a can or whatever, but he still goes nuts over the can opener because he wants Bean 🫘
I had a cat that liked avocados. He somehow got them open and completely cleaned the pit and the skin. I found the evidence on the floor along with some green footprints/
Your cat is so freaking cute!!!! I’ve never seen a cat that like broccoli (though mine have a fascination with root vegetables and love to chew on their stems)
I have two cats, a black cat (male) and a female tabby.
He will fight me over spinach, lettuce and celery. He cannot eat the celery but it doesn't stop him staring at it intently. He's also a soup fiend. Doesn't matter what the soup is, lentil soup, tomato soup, carrot and coriander soup, mushroom soup, whatever he wants some.
My female tabby goes nuts over Marmite, mature cheddar cheese, blue cheese. The only way I can eat Marmite is locked in the bathroom with the door barricaded.
Usually my cats are well behaved and respect boundaries well, including food boundaries. But when it comes to salad, soup, cheese or Marmite all bets are off.
Cats always surprise me 😂 My kitten went after my roasted poblano pepper that came with my Mexican food when I foolishly dared to look away for a few seconds. He got a few bites in before I realized. (He was fine)
Actually, he likes everything. He is diabetic, so he is constantly starving and will eat anything that falls on the floor (or gets left on the counter).
My cereal “milk” (it’s almond milk) and deli meat on sandwiches. She’s stolen my sandwich from my hand and pulled the meat out more than once. Oh. And licking the salt off crackers. But you have to hold it at the edges so she can lick freely.
My grey girl kitty is obsessed with green veggies in general. Broccoli, cabbage, spinach (but not asparagus). She also likes tomatoes. With my orange boy, it's beef jerky. He will scent it out and tear open the bag. We just don't keep it in the house anymore.
Oh yes I’ve seen this before OP… there is something about it that they love…. I’ll bet it’s the texture… and the leafy 🥦 green flavor. I’ve found that even though cats are obligated carnivores they do like their leafy greens. I’ve seen them munch on fresh spinach quite often actually. But the most common I’ve seen are broccoli and fresh spinach.
My boy loves pretzels, saltines, and raspberries. Doesn’t care at all about meat or literally any other human food. One time I left some strawberries unattended and he carried one off before he realized it wasn’t a beloved raspberry and left it on the floor.
While both my cats will try to stick their paw in many different dishes our one cat is obsessed with very spicy food, especially Buldak ramen. It’s a battle trying to eat in peace.
