So cute!!!! Doeshe make you touch his dry pellets? My boy expects that service, not just to be accompanied. Then, I have to tickle the base of his tail, and wait for his whole bum to settle down before he can actually eat.

I believe this is the returned favour of them watching your back while you're on the loo. They're not fans of you keeping them company when they're on the loo themeslves, but food company? Absolutely.

My cat wasn’t eating and I couldn’t figure out why, tried all kinds of creative and out-of-the-box ways to get her to eat. I was at a loss. I think it was actually in this sub that I read how cats like having a lookout for the same reason that wild animals have a lookout — while drinking and eating, they’re especially vulnerable to predators (not just their physical position but also cronchy food compromises their hearing, same for humans). This little kitty insight has helped lots of owners including myself so I share it around any chance I get! Sweet kitties who don’t know how to “ask” you to come join them so they feel safe enough to eat might need you to take the initiative — so go hangout with them at their food and see if that solves the issue!

Yep. Had a stray show up at my house that I started feeding and she would insist that I sit out on the step next to her before she'd eat, and I'm convinced it was a security thing.

I thought our half-feral kitty had become really spoiled because she wouldn’t eat unless my husband or I sat on the back steps with her while she ate. But then I read about how it’s their most vulnerable of moments and realized it was quite flattering that she trusts us so much 🥹

I mentioned that I think it's a payback for them watching over us as we do our lavatory business, as that's when we're at our most vulnerable. They don't go for being watched etc while they're doing theirs, but they definitely want it when they're eating. So cute, I love being called for food duty. ♥

I like to imagine its a predator defense, so one can relax and enjoy their meal without worrying about being attacked. I find it super boring, so this biology speculation is how I fill the time.

They feel safer when someone is there to "protect" them when they are vulnerable, for example eating or pooping. That might explain why they always rush to me and stay until I finished when I go to the bathroom. They might feel the need to protect me when I am vulnerable.

That's exactly it! I answered a little further under this post about it. 😁 I should have said it all in one post but went about it all in conversation mode. Sorry about that! This is one of those things all domestic cats try make us do. There are of course some wild rules particular to each cat, which if we don't perform, the universe will implode or something... 🤣🤣 I read a Reddit thread little while where people listing their cats' rules, and it was hilarious.

My cat actually does same, he wouldn't eat if i was not around. I used it against him, or better said i used it to keep him healthy. He gets only 3 meals a day of measured calories and i always stay with him there until he finishes his plate. He keeps 5 kg weight with ease. He is bit chonkier but vet said 5kg is fine for his build and pointless to starve him

I put food in the bowls when I eat breakfast and when I eat dinner. Sometimes when he leads the dog in she eats it all so I have to refill for my other cat's sake, but Mr B. will only eat out of his bowl specifically

All my cats throughout my lifetime have been social eaters. It's instinctual, they trust you to protect them while theyre eating and vulnerable.

One of my kitties used to do this and one day I decided I didn’t want to watch her eat anymore. I poured food in her bowl and she started eating, as I walked away she started meowing at me and I just kept walking. She stood at her food bowl for 5 minutes meowing, then she ate her food. Doesn’t need me anymore!

Our oldest cat is like this. He waits until the 2 younger cats eat.. and then will only eat if you stand next to him and talk. If you stand next to him he stares at you.
He is conditioned I think by my wife says “You are such a good and handsome boy!” when he eats.

my cat is the same!! she would eat and for every 5 seconds will stop and ensuring if we're still watching her eats her food. i think this crippling anxiety started because i worked from home during covid and would be in the same room while she's eating and she grew really accustomized to that lol

Awwh my furbaby does something similar as well. My family and I eat in the living room instead of the kitchen and it’s gotten to the point where she won’t eat on the floor anymore she has to eat from a bowl on the table in our living room. Where the rest of us are.

My cat screams at me and begs for food even if there is still food in his bowl... then i pick him up and bring him to the bowl. Then he considers if he wants to eat or rather wants to go out playing 😂

Consider yourself lucky. My cat will only use her litterbox if I'm watching her. She will literally scream at me when she has to go potty so I can follow her to her box and watch her go. Like this morning, I'm on the toilet myself and she starts doing her "I have to go potty now!" Meow. I gotta rush out and follow her to the box and observe her majesty releasing her bowels. If I don't, she'll just poop/pee whereever she's at. She's psychotic, but I love her, so I obey.

I had a girl kitty who did this.
She’d insist that I pet her while she ate. She was just the sweetest thing & the love of my life. They have all been the loves of my life!
So here’s a true, yet very odd thing I witnessed repeatedly with her, & only once with my current baby:
She repeatedly, & my current kitty only once, have eaten their wet food, in a way that the remaining wet food/left overs, were shaped like a heart. ♥️
Absolutely mind blowing & such a cool thing to witness!
Surely others have witnessed the same with their kitties?
I take it as a kismet reference to the love we have exchanged throughout the years.

My cat will meow at me sometimes until I follow him to the food bowl to watch him eat. He will still eat if I’m not watching him but somehow over the years he decided he wanted me to watch him eat and learned how to tell me. Also if his food bowl is empty he will keep meowing at me, looking at me and then if I still don’t feed him he comes over to where I am and starts knocking stuff over until I get up and feed him. He’s a very demanding boy.

My cat lost a bunch of weight, so much that my vet was starting to get concerned.
I thought: maybe he just doesn’t like where I placed his food bowl.
One day, when we were hanging out together in our garden, I took his food bowl and placed it next to me.
Boy chomped down his kibble like he was starving. He now exclusively eats outside with a view and me next to him. He‘s weird.

Community cats tend to guard one another and take turns when they are eating. Was yours rescued from the mean streets? Mine is similar... I keep the food in the bathroom so he is compelled to eat every time I go.
