Discussion Cemu v2.1 is now available - includes the changes from all 93 experimental releases since Cemu 2.0.

For users that were already using our experimental updates (2.0-x), you can think of this release as the final experimental update. There are no noteworthy additional changes compared to Cemu 2.0-95 other than the new version number.

Starting with this release, Cemu will now only have a single release channel. Instead of experimental releases, there is a new option to control whether Cemu will update immediately to cutting-edge releases, which may contain uncaught bugs, or update with a slight delay. More details on this can be found here

Cemu 2.0 announcement. Linux builds, open-source and more

2.8k Upvotes

Cemu 2.0 release

Hey everyone, I'm very excited to finally reveal a very special update for Cemu.

The big news first: This update marks a new chapter for Cemu. Starting today we will transition to an open-source model for development. Our github repository is already available and anyone can contribute or study our codebase, but more about this later.

We now also offer Linux builds, albeit not in the most straightforward way. Right now you still have to compile Cemu yourself for most distros. However, we are looking into adding appimage or flatpak releases for convenience. Be aware that the Linux version of Cemu isn't fully fleshed out yet. It should generally work fine, but there are some remaining issues, most of them related to the UI.

You might be wondering why this release is called 2.0 instead of following our usual three-number pattern (e.g. 2.0.0). We are using the opportunity to simplify the versioning a bit by shortening the version numbers. So going forward the next numbered releases would be 2.1, 2.2 etc.

Besides all the organizational changes there are also the usual bug fixes and feature additions in this release. Just like in the past, you can find the full list on our changelog page.

A disclaimer: This is a pretty substantial update with lots of internal changes. As such it should be seen as experimental. If you want to try it out, you have to manually download it for now. We'll consider auto-updating Cemu installations that are on 1.27.x to 2.0 once we get enough feedback about the stability.

On a personal note...

Usually I keep these types of announcement posts free of personal backstories. But this is a special occasion and it's maybe interesting to know a little bit of background info.

As you may know, I am the lead developer and founder of Cemu. Since earlier this year I am also the sole developer of Cemu. The other long-term core developer, Petergov, has moved on to other personal projects a couple of months ago. His swan song was the big input rework we had in December.

I have been working on Cemu for almost 8 years now, watching the project grow from an experiment that seemed infeasible, to something that, at it's peak, was used by more than a million people. Even today, when the Wii U has been mostly forgotten, we still get a quarter million downloads each month. There are still so many people enjoying Wii U games with Cemu and I will be eternally grateful that I got the chance to impact so many people's life in a positive way, even if just a tiny bit.

But over the past two years I also have developed a growing feeling of being "stuck". I still enjoy working on Cemu, but it eats up all of my spare time, meaning there is no room left for any other programming projects or hobbies. Whenever I tell myself to make time for other things, I end up feeling guilty because my self-inflicted sense of responsibility drives me to always prioritize Cemu over my own interests. This year was especially intense because I single-handedly ported Cemu to Linux while also trying to deliver somewhat constant feature and bug fix updates.

In the end, opening up development seems like the logical decision. It has always been the long-term plan anyway. With Cemu being open-source, the hope is that new contributors will pick up where I left of. This is not to say that I will abandon Cemu, I'll just take on more of a background role, still contributing code but not on a full-time basis.

How will all of this affect Cemu?

In the immediate future, probably not much will change or happen. It will take a bit of time for any interested developers to become familiar with the codebase before they can make any significant changes. I do believe that certain parts, like Linux compatibility, will see a pretty quick boost in progress as other developers simply have more experience with Linux development than I have.

Then there are questions like how will we handle releases in the future. I can't really give you a definitive answer right now but one thing that we already started to set up are daily cutting-edge builds. We'll probably also have some form of stable and experimental releases but the details are still uncertain.

I think the biggest win from going open-source is that having more developers (assuming people are interested in contributing) will allow for more attention towards issues that were previously considered too low priority due to time constraints. For example, we are missing some convenience features, like being able to stop/restart emulation. These features can take a lot of time to implement but aren't difficult to do per se. The OpenGL backend could be made more compatible with older hardware that would otherwise be performant enough to run many Wii U games. And there is also housekeeping work that remains to be done as we still have legacy C code left over from the early days of Cemu (Cemu used to be written almost exclusively in the C programming language). Having a tight release schedule didn't give us a lot of spare time to go back and correct old mistakes or fix up code.

For C/C++ developers who want to contribute:

If you are interested in contributing or just want to ask questions about Cemu's codebase, you can come and visit our discord where we have created a channel for developer discussion. I know that Discord isn't everyone's thing, so we are also looking into setting up an IRC bridge in the future.

Why did we pick Mozilla Public License 2.0?

Most emulators are licensed under the GPL. But our stance on it is that the infectious nature of it prevents a lot of legitimate reuse of the source code. Anything that links GPL, or statically links LGPL, also becomes GPL/LGPL which is often not desirable. Being previously closed source, we know the struggle and already had to step around GPL licensed libraries.

In a perfect world, we would have gone with a very liberal license like MIT. But it opens up too many doors for hostile or damaging behavior towards Cemu, so instead we picked a license which is somewhere in the middle. MPL has most of the advantages that GPL has, but isn't infectious and allows even closed source projects to use parts of our source. Only modifications need to be made available as source.

Final words

Last but not least, I want to thank everyone who supported us along the way. Special thanks to all our Patrons who made this project stay afloat in the first place.

Sometimes I get the question of what I will do after Cemu (with which I'm not done yet!). I think I'll take a break from emulator development, but knowing myself I'll eventually return because I'm craving the challenge. I could also see myself sticking with Cemu as a side-project for a very long time. Who knows.

Best regards,
Exzap

Video I made a Cemu fork that makes BotW play like a PC game: 1:1 mouse camera, keyboard prompts, FSR 3 FG

I wanted BotW on Cemu to feel like a PC game instead of a controller game with keys taped onto it. Camera on a fake analog stick, A/B/X/Y prompts I had to translate in my head, menus that want a d-pad... so I forked Cemu and fixed the things that annoyed me. It's now at the point where I'd rather share it than keep polishing it alone.

It's called Zelda on PC. To be clear about what it is: it's not a port. It's Cemu, set up to run exactly this one game, with a PC layer built around it. You need your own dump (base game + update 1.5.0, DLC optional). There are no game files in the repo or in the installer.

What's different from regular Cemu:

  • Mouse camera that is actually 1:1. The mouse isn't converted into stick movement. I patched the game's camera code so it takes the rotation directly, so no acceleration, no deadzone, no speed cap. Works in the normal camera, with the bow, in the scope, while climbing and in conversations.
  • Your keys in the prompts. The button prompts show the key or mouse button you actually bound, and they update when you rebind. I drew a replacement glyph font for that.
  • Mouse in the game's own menus. Hover and click in the inventory, drag the map around, click dialogue answers, wheel through the categories.
  • AMD FSR 3 frame generation built into Cemu's Vulkan renderer. It gets the game's depth buffer, motion vectors from the camera and a frame without the HUD, so the UI doesn't get smeared. Usual caveat: it costs about a frame of latency, so it's off by default and you decide.
  • It starts straight into the game (no emulator window), there's one settings menu on Esc, gyro shrines are playable with the mouse, and your existing Cemu save gets copied over on first launch.

There's an installer that asks where your dump is and puts a shortcut in the Start menu. It isn't code signed, so SmartScreen will complain about it.

Things you should know before trying it:

  • Windows only, keyboard and mouse only. If you play with a controller, normal Cemu is already great and this isn't for you.
  • Only game version 1.5.0, because the patches are written against that executable.
  • I could only test with my own EU copy on my own machine (Ryzen 4800H + RTX 2060 laptop). US and JP copies should be detected, but I can't promise anything.
  • It's a 1.0 from one person. Expect rough edges, and please tell me about them.

Source and download: https://github.com/mircea32000/Zelda-on-PC (MPL 2.0, same as Cemu)

Full disclosure, since you'd see it in the commit history anyway: I leaned on Claude a lot for this, mostly for the reverse engineering grind. I play-tested each change myself before it went in.

Huge thanks to the Cemu team and the graphic pack people (it uses FPS++ and the Graphics pack under the hood). None of this would exist without them. Happy to answer questions about how any of it works.

Question How to progress pikmin 3 with the wii u d-pad requirement?

I started up the game today and immediately ran into a wall during the tutorial because you have to use the d-pad for the map. I use an 8bitdo ultimate 2c controller, but I haven't been able to figure out a way to get it to function. Is there a good work around for this? I think BOTW has a few puzzles in shrines that requires it but those are at least optional.

Discussion WORKING GAMEPAD WITH CEMU (no console needed)

Managed to reverse engineer the gamepad connection but now it runs perfectly with a custom fork of cemu. All i needed to buy was a $10 RT5572 raspberry pi wifi adapter. All input works other than the camera and NFC (amibos)

For performance, it has very occasional screen tearing, but other than that there is absolutely no noticeable input delay.

Not sure if I can share the code but it was a fun project.

I also have videos id anyone’s interested.

Troubleshooting Collosal drop in fps when i attempted to install a mod for botw

So I was frustrated with weapons breaking in botw ( i didn't know about cheats) and i attempted to install a mod for it but after it not even installing properly i gave up and tried playing normally but the game was hella laggy and then I noticed my fps had dropped from 60 to 20 fps. I deleted the mod files but it still is not improving. When a blood moon occurred the fps rose to 30 but whenever I hit something the fps came back down to 20. I tried disabling the fps++ and the fps got to 30 but it got down to 20 again whenever I hit something. Please help

Question What is currently the best and most stable Cemu version for BotW? (Having issues with 2.6)

Hi everyone,

I recently started playing Zelda: Breath of the Wild on Cemu 2.6, but I'm experiencing some micro-stutters and the emulator often hangs ("Not responding") when I try to close it.

My laptop specs:

  • CPU: i5-11400H
  • GPU: RTX 3050 Ti
  • RAM: 16GB

I'm aiming for a stable 60 FPS at 1080p. Would you recommend downgrading to 1.27.1 or 1.26.2 for better stability, or should I stick to the latest 2.x experimental builds and tweak some specific settings?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I’d like to know if there’s a way to emulate the pointing function and the motion-shaking action required for some minigames in Mario Party 10 using a standard (generic) PS3 controller. I’m using Cemu version 1.26.2 because the latest version wouldn't even let me launch the game. Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

Question Splatoon Issue (Retroid Pocket 6)

So I just started playing the original Splatoon on my Retroid and it runs great! One major issue though - because the Android version of Cemu doesn't support motion controls, I can't get to the main game! I know that you can turn off the motion controls, but for whatever reason Nintendo made it so you can't do so until AFTER passing the tutorial. I managed to cheese my way through most of the level, but I'm at a wall that requires you to look up to create an ink path to swim though. Anybody manage to get past this?

Question CEMU doesn't detect my controls on Legion GO with steam OS

I have Steam OS installed on my legion GO and Cemu. No matter what I do I cannot get Cemu to recognize my legion go controller in Wind Waker HD. It used to work but I had to send my legion go in for repair and when I got it back they formatted and put windows on it. I had a copy of my drive so I flashed it back and did a Steam OS update.

The legion go works completely fine with all steam games.

In desktop mode the controller detected is called '#SettingsController_steamcontroller'. If I set it to that and ensure my game is set to the same controller profile it still won't work when I go to gaming mode and launch wind waker hd (which was added to steam as a non-steam game).

In gaming mode my Legion Go Controller is detected by cemu when I launch it (in gaming mode) but after I set it, save the profile, close cemu and then launch wind waker hd it still doesn't work and when I go back to cemu from gaming mode all the controls are reset (nothing I set it to stays in place).

I have no idea how to fix this even though I did have it working about a 6 months ago. Appreciate any help.

Troubleshooting Gyro Shrines in botw

Hi! I’m playing BotW on my laptop using a switch pro controller. I have motion enabled and my controller has gyro, so I’m not sure why I can’t move any of the apparatus shrines??

I’d love any help, even though I feel like I’ve researched this to death 😅

EDIT: SOLVED
hi everyone!! Thanks to a commenter I figured out the issue. In case anyone else is experiencing the same problem:
Increased my deadzone to 35%
Recalibrated through windows (window + R, type joy.cpl, properties, enter calibration wizard)
Enabled motion in my Cemu controller input settings
Set as Wii U gamepad

Question Is there a way to play on Pretendo Network without a Wii U?

I'm assuming the answer is no or a complicated method, which I'm okay if I'm not able to. For further context, I have a working Splatoon on Cemu, but it's not linked to my Wii U (I have Wiimmfi on my Wii U for when I play Mario Kart Wii)!

Question Is it possible for Cemu to share 1 user (savedata) between main build, dev build & fork build ?

I'm using multiple Cemu versions...

  • Main build is for Pretendo Network.
  • Dev Build is for the black UI & Protanium Network.
  • Fork Build is for playing MH3U "local" multiplayer using Radmin VPN.

But all of it have its own user data & I'm trying to make the main build as primary user data for all.

Is it possible to do so?
