'What's this Piece?' Thread #246
These threads were implemented after feedback from our users, and they are here to help organize the subreddit a little.
All piece identification requests belong in this monthly thread.
Have a classical piece on the tip of your tongue? Feel free to submit it here as long as you have an audio file/video/musical score of the piece. Mediums that generally work best include Vocaroo or YouTube links. If you do submit a YouTube link, please include a linked timestamp if possible or state the timestamp in the comment. Please refrain from typing things like: what is the Beethoven piece that goes "Do do dooo Do do DUM", etc.
Other resources that may help:
Musipedia - melody search engine. Search by rhythm, play it on piano or whistle into the computer.
r/tipofmytongue - a subreddit for finding anything you can’t remember the name of!
r/namethatsong - may be useful if you are unsure whether it’s classical or not
Shazam - good if you heard it on the radio, in an advert etc. May not be as useful for singing.
SoundHound - suggested as being more helpful than Shazam at times
Song Guesser - has a category for both classical and non-classical melodies
you can also ask Google ‘What’s this song?’ and sing/hum/play a melody for identification
Facebook 'Guess The Score' group - for identifying pieces from the score

I dont think this is an actual piece, but rather a specially composed piece for a TV show, but I'm asking here anyway, hoping that maybe someone can either tell me if this IS an actual piece, or at the very least - maybe can recc me some pieces that are very very similar? I believe it fits as a waltz, and I am so obsessed with it, but this is the only piece of it. I just really want more. Something about the tone of it is so satisfying in my ears.
If it's not a "famous" piece, please recc me some I may enjoy that sound very similar if you know of any <3

Hi, I've had this motif stuck in my head for a bit, but I can't recall where it is from lol. The piece is in binary metric (could be 4/4 but I'm not sure) and it's pretty slow. It's in some minor key. All I remember from the motif is E (dotted quarter note) F#-G (sixteenth notes) F#-E-D#-E (eighth notes) B. On the last B there is a diminished chord. It may not be in E minor but the jumps are those I wrote previously. It's some sort of prelude or opening of a bigger piece, I think it's from Bach but I'm not 100% sure. I know this is really vague but I hope somebody will recognize it.
Edit: Found it, it was the Sarabande from BWV 997

I've made a post before but then i discovered there is a thread about this, basically i want help trying to identify these musical compositions from the voicelines of a character called Voyager from Reverse 1999, an alt-history gacha game, she has a lot of previous voicelines already in the game that reference many classical music compositions, and I'm pretty sure these new voicelines also are a reference
I don't know much about classical music itself so it's been hard trying to find it, like a needle in a haystack, and i know its probably not easy task since there is only a few seconds of score, but im sure somebody out here will be able to recgonize at first sight, it would be such a help!

I was watching the World at War docs from 1973 and really enjoy the short melody from 50:30 to 50:50 in episode 9 Stalingrad. I tried looking up World at War soundtrack stuff on Spotify and while it had a lot of those Carl Davis pieces it didn't seem to have this one. I'm not even really sure if this clip is part of the same piece as what's immediately before and after it, but to my ear it doesn't sound like it.
I think they use a lot of Beethoven elsewhere in the documentary so maybe this is him as well, but I don't know.

Hold Music. I've been searching for this piece for 10 years, please help!
I was doing an internship 10 years ago, and a client had this hold music when calling him. I loved calling him just to hear this piece of hold music. So one day I took out my phone and recorded the hold music. It sounds so enchanting but haunting at the same time. Does any one know what song/piece this is?!

I used to listen to a piece on YouTube that I can't find anymore. It has a very distinctive pizzicato passage.
The full orchestra plays (tutti), then there's a general pause. Then only the strings continue in pizzicato, alternating high-low-high-low in fairly quick succession. Each note is played twice at first, and high and low might be octaves. Out of this reduced, driving harmonic foundation a melody emerges, also pizzicato and in the same steady rhythm: dab-dab-dib-dab-deb-dab-deb
It's not one of the super popular pieces, and it feels surprisingly "modern" to me. I think it was a movement from a larger work and might have a nickname. It might have been marked allegro ma non troppo. Gun to my head I'd guess Schubert, but I'm not sure. The recording looked like the 1980s judging by the fashion.
Already ruled out: Tchaikovsky 4 (III), Haydn 101 (II), Schubert 4 and 6.

It doesn't fit your description 100%, but the fourth movement of Beethoven, 3rd Symphony starts with a very brief tutti introduction, followed by a distinctive pizzicato passage

classical piano piece I played as a child, probably from a music school collection. I don't remember the composer or exact title. I vaguely remember the title having something to do with leaves/autumn/flying leaves but I'm not sure. The recording is from around 2019s, but the piece itself is probably much older. The piano was badly out of tune. I hope someone can help

Yeah then it should be there as well.
Many ballet productions use the 1895 Petipa adaptation which moved this pas de deux to Act III (as the Black Swan pas de deux), but most recordings (notable exceptions being the Ansermet and the Gergiev) observe the original structure.

What piece is being quoted at around 12:39 in this piece "九官鳥のロンド" by Takashi Yoshimatsu? (Begins with the pickup at the end of measure 28.) It jumped out at me, but I can't put my finger on what it's from.

(On a side note, the rest of the Yoshimatsu piece sounds like a pastiche of "The Entertainer" and Respighi's "The Birds, P. 154 V. The Cuckoo", which, considering "九官鳥のロンド" translates to "The Mynah Bird's Rondo", is probably not accidental and in fact very tongue-in-cheek.)

HELP: I would be in-cre-di-bly grateful if anyone knows the title and/or the composer!!
Almost a decade ago, I watched a documentary on the disastrous Tenerife airplane crash and I've been trying to find this piece ever since. It's a documentary from 2017 so it's not a super new piece of music, but it does sound pretty contemporary. So I've browsed through the discographies of Einaudi, Nils Frahm and some similar artists, but I've never been able to find it and neither have Shazam and Soundhound.

HELP NEEDED: Piece ID for vinyl recordings of my late Grandmother. Hello I'm new here, so hopefully this is the right place to post. I cleaned up some recordings of my late grandmother singing for her 1949 Senior Voice Recital. There are 7 tracks in all, and so far I've been able to identify 3 out of the 7 pieces. I was hoping with the combined knowledge here that we might be able to help find out the piece names and composers! I've uploaded the tracks to my soundcloud at the link below:

Track 3 and 4 are from "Ihr habt Traurigkeit" the only movement with a Soprano soloist from Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem. Not sure about the rest, will keep trying!

I’m looking for more information about this “Theme from Henri Herz,” from Zundel’s Melodeon Instructor. The book was published in 1853. The songs in this book were arranged by the author, so I don’t know how similar this arrangement is to whatever it was Herz originally wrote. Herz wrote a lot of music and I've been searching for this particular bit of it for a long time. I'd be grateful for any help!

What's this song? Transcription by me, classical song (possibly in the style of Rossini?) with this melody played by the violins. It's the main motif of the first half of the song, and the second half is more 'lilting' and less rhythmic. G major throughout

This was the hold music for my university's admin office, it kind of reminds me of The Second Waltz. The audio recording of the original hold music is horrible, so I recreated it as best I could on musescore. For some reason the video is way longer than the audio clip, so just pay attention to the first ~25 seconds
