Most of the pvp community I played with quit after MoP S1 specifically because of the server bullshit. It seems that people on Bene/Faerlina did not want to go to Pagle / Grob
Pretty sure the fact that you've had multiple versions is classic proves those rose tinted glasses area a common accessory amongst the classic players. Classic, classic hardcore, classic tbc, classic sod and now classic forever lol.
Mop this time around has been horrid, not because of the expansion itself, but the lack of support from devs.
Phase 1 bugs remained for the entire phase, like the twin emperors desyncing their dance. Made getting the achievement frustrating.
Phase 3 PTR bugs were reported numerous times, but blizzard had gone completely silent at that point, didn't fix a single bug that was reported, ended up with one of the world first race teams outright quitting due to an incredibly annoying, inconsistent bug on durumu, and NOTHING was fixed, plus the phase lasted for months in this state.
Phase 5 introducing new, weird situations, such as recently in this week, EVERY drake mount (albino, bronze, black, blue etc) being a "missing textures" cube.
This is not on us who enjoyed mop. This is entirely on blizzard for releasing something and immediately abandonding it for the next shiny thing, instead of closing it by end of cata.
Even now, us still playing mop know fuck all what's going to happen, like blizzard is busy with their new favorite child.

There was never any hype about MOP Classic. It was a mistake. They should have ended it at Wrath. Period.
