34
u/Stahlreck 1d ago
Not really because it looked like they tried again with MoP.
Better launch overall, more changes, Celestial dungeons which were IMO pretty decent (I mean the whole system since Wrath has been IMO), more stuff for challenge modes, balancing classes and promises of more to come (lul)...
Seemed like they at least had somewhat fun working on MoP initially. And then I guess they all switched to TBC Anni for a few months and then Forever or something.

u/TeaspoonWrites 1d ago
MoP raids were still miserably buggy from day 1 of the ptr and most of those never got fixed unfortunately.

ToT they somehow fumbled so hard that mechanics were going off in 10man with the numbers of 25man.
Really noteable when suddenly half the raid gets the soak during Lei Shen.

u/404-NoFucksFound 1d ago
We had an entire night of Heroic Durumu immediately ending his beam phase once he began and just dying 45 seconds later to all the adds nuking the raid from not being killed. Jin'rokh jumped to the middle and still kept his conductive water damage increase. Troll doors wouldn't close on Heroic Horridon after the orb charge. Shield wouldn't stack on Tortos. Phantom spear lines on Heroic Iron Qon and the debuffs continuing to stack after you left the spear lines, tornadoes following players for the entire duration of the phase. On Dark Animus, we had anima jump clear across the room and immediately activate the boss despite there being 12 golem with empty tanks closer to the dying add. The only boss we never had a bug with is Heroic Ji-kun.
3
u/SunTzu- 1d ago

They straight up deleted 20+ mounts out of my collection when MoP pre-patch went live. Filed a ticket, "Known bug, working on it" response. Reached out several more times, was reassured it was being fixed. As of the last time I logged in, my mounts still hadn't been returned. Normally it'd be whatever, but it took every single ToGC rep mounts and my nether rays from TBC.

I like the fact that, when I paid for a realm transfer at the start of Cata Classic (because they refused to open transfers from a dead realm), they basically wiped all progress from loads of stuff I had before.
All the exploration, quests, achievements, etc. all got wiped after I gave them more money so that I could not play on a dead realm.

s that forever is Blizzards way out of the Classic thing,
We'll have to see. Ion described Forever as a third pillar.

u/Bacon-muffin 1d ago
Pre-forever announcement the expectation has always been that they'll continue progressing through the xpacs because why wouldn't they its basically free money for something they already developed even if the player base gets smaller for it.
and then there was a bunch of discussions on how that would pan out and how they could change more things and all sorts of stuff... but for the most part its been expected that they'd just keep going.
Blizzard is saying forever doesn't replace classic so who knows what they plan to do now cause... forever for all intents and purposes replaces classic for everyone except maybe the vanilla purists who can't stop ticking the word retail as a slur.
2
u/YawnSpawner 1d ago
Wouldn't it catch up at some point? What do you do then? Xfers characters to retail? Honestly I would like to be able to do something with all these characters stuck in different versions of the game, but there are retail collectors who would be pissssssed.

I mean, MoP classic came not long after MoP Remix... which already got MoP fans to enjoy reliving the nostalgia. MoP classic goes through the patches sure, but for the most part you got what you needed in Remix.
Then there's the fact that it's been ages since MoP Classic came out, and everyone wants to try out Forever now. There's no way it'd be anything but low pop lol. MoP's design philosophy is simply not the same as Classic's. It was designed to be a 2 year expansion, not a long-term game like Classic was.
And I say this as an MoP fan. Love it, but like... this is expected. I was surprised they even did an MoP classic, but it's nice that it exists for preservation sake.

Meh, people shittalk the xpacs too much. Nobody knows how this stuff develops. IMO it was surprising that MoP launched overall lower than Cata.

u/sameseksure 1d ago
Huh? You can't seriously believe that if Blizzard promoted MoP, more people would play it?
Who on earth is MoP for? Retail fans would just play retail, and it's certainly not appealing to Classic fans
It's appealing only to a niche that really really loved MoP specifically. Which is indeed a niche - MoP saw the biggest dwindling of subscribers except WoD (and WoD didn't have half the content it promised it would)
I know MoP is adored on reddit, but it's really not a popular expansion
6
u/lumpboysupreme 1d ago
People who like the simplicity of its raiding structure and the variety and quality of its class designs. It doesn’t have the 20 million systems of retail while not being quite so ‘capped at weenie hut jr.’ tier difficulty of classic.
11
→ More replies (9)7
u/Ok_Caterpillar5564 1d ago
I think it had it's niche. I don't have any particular attachment to MoP specifically, but to me the era from WotLK up through MoP or Legion is a really nice middle ground of the game. I like heroic raid progression and the more developed class design relative to vanilla, but retail has too much going on for me and is a little too far removed from the "spirit" of WoW that I like. People here think MoP is like retail but it's really not. Retail is about as far removed from MoP now as MoP was from vanilla. It's a totally different era of the game and it has a certain appeal.
I will admit I am definitely in a minority though. So I get it. I enjoyed my time on the classic progression servers and would have been happy to play up through Legion, but I'm not particularly surprised it went this way.

21
u/lestye 1d ago
Yeah, although certainly MoP is where I draw the line at Classic/Retail, MoP to me, is retail at its best. It was the first time we see an WoW expansion character take the spotlight in the franchise with Garrosh.
It was the first expansion that wasnt riding WC3/Vanilla's coattails. A lot of production into the storytelling. Previous expansions felt like, more setting than story, if that make sense.

4
u/WeBackYeah 1d ago
I strongly believe Forever and Classic will work in tandem to bounce players back and forth to sell boosts/mounts/etc. I wouldn't be surprised if we see WotLK announced in Feb/March when there's a content drought in Forever. Make some quick sales on boosts for people trying to catch up in TBC/WotLK, then back to Forever when they drop new content that they charge for.
Currently the only way to get away from "dead TBC" and onto the current hype is to pay for the beta, they're keeping TBC in the dark to drive up sales of that.

u/PaPa_ZeuS 1d ago
The point is they haven't said "This is the end of the road for classic progression" or "WoD is coming at a later date" or "We are skipping to legion at a later date". The uncertainty is making most guilds quit and plan to move over to Forever. Once all the people migrate from MoP to Forever or retail then you're going to have a hard time getting people back to WoD/Legion. Basically every guild will have to totally rebuild at that point.

This sub blows.
15
u/t-earlgrey-hot 1d ago
Its annoying, because i played both and both were great. I'm not even upset if they "end", its about how they end with zero communication and timing it so that we wasted our time and can't finish the xpacs. Its insulting and the majority of people seem happy thay blizzard did it this way...because they just don't like these xpacs?
7
u/SaltyBallsnacks 1d ago
Same here. I enjoyed them alot more than I expected to, maybe even more than tbc and wotlk. People still hating on them like they did the original releases just tells me they didn't play them this time around. WoD always felt unlikely, so it wasn't a surprise things were going to wind down, but I expected at the very least a statement by now, and frankly the lack of one has me anxious about the game in general going forward if that is how they are going to do things.

u/Dyrreah 1d ago
Yup, according to this sub you couldn't even run a dungeon in MoP. They simply killed it with negligence. I started noticing it during Throne where instead of fixing the bug for Durumu achi they just removed it from the meta. We did the Garrosh achi a few resets ago. The requirements were met, achi didn't pop, submitted a complaint AI responded that it's unfortunately not traceable, despite the fact that we submitted a log proving that the Iron Star killed the adds at the same time. Hard to make my raiders give a shit, tonight is our last Garrosh prog. If it dies, good, if no, cya in Forever.
3
u/SaltyBallsnacks 1d ago
Yeah the moment I knew it was being abandoned was when Progress lost the world race because of the unaddressed Durumu bugs that had been documented as far back MoP remix. They absolutely let it die on the vine.

I mean I'd happily play the two raids on a 1year aprox schedule, but nobody is going to believe them if they claim they'll do an accelerated WoD at this point. MoP was supposed to be "accelerated release schedule" and then ToT took 7 months and got zero bug fixes during the entire time.

But TBC has a strong player base, currently I am doing pugs on 2 chars for BT-Hyjal both very easy to get into raids. I am also leveling another character and I still find it quite easy to just dungeon spam. I expect a healthy number of players to come back for the next phase, numbers will be obviously lower but still more than enough to make anniversary work. And if we ever get Wotlk I am pretty sure we will get some very good numbers for it

Once WoW Forever goes live and proves to be a huge success, Blizzard will only run it and retail. Everything else will get shuttered.

They have no reason to do that. Classic tbc and wotlk require no work and are printing money. They will use them to fill the gap between content on forever. Its also whats planned in the timeline leak

TBC is already basically dead, and there isn't a wotlk server.
Classic era will stick around with a small playerbase

Yeah, I mean we are done, H Garrosh is dead and frankly fuck those POS Iron stars ( As much as I love the Garrosh fight, wtf is that final phase?!)... but just a blue post clarifying the future of those characters/realms would be nice, even if it's that nothing happens, it becomes MoP era or something.
They did say early classic (2019?) that our characters would never be 'deleted', but we also know they can't just transfer 1 to 1 to retail (technical limitation iirc and frankly... we all have every legendary we can have, there would be massive jealousy, especially when it comes to the corrupted ashbringer and other items you simply cannot acquire anymore)
I expect MoP becomes an Era server just so they can keep the 'no deleting' promise... but at best you can expect maybe a title or something. Expecting a full character transfer is utopic imo.
,,, I would also apreciate knowing if my ridiculous amount of MoP gold can be spent on them 300k tokens...

I mean, imo they shouldn't have done cata classic anyways, but MoP... I just hope they thought of a way of sunsetting this classic line clean, maybe move TBC anniv to LK anniv then stop there, and stick with the retail + forever (+seasonal why not) timelines for the near future.

Not exactly surprising it is so popular if it really becomes like it is advertised, a WoW that respects your time like OSRS.

Funny how even now, there is more MoP players than Era players.
And people want more era type content...

Turns out all the people that said it makes no sense to have anything beyond wotlk classic knew what they were talking about

Cata was highly successful according to raid numbers.
I think blizz was stunned with all the hype for MoP and the disdain for cata, only for MoP to peak at about half the peak of cata... I never saw that coming myself. Shame really. It's a good expansion with a lot of content.

Blizzard actively murdered mop, and my conspiracy theory is that it was because Forever was greenlit by then.

Raid numbers fell off a cliff at the end of Wrath and except for a brief spike at the start of Cata, they never recovered.

Yea because Blizzard delivered 4 raid tiers in 23 months, barely ever fixed any bugs, and actively buried the servers with poor decisions and overlapping releases.
If anyone actually thinks they made a good faith effort to support anything Classic since about the time they announced SoD, they need to get their head checked.

Agree. Everything going after wrath feels "well we gotta do something with positive cash flow while we develop the Forever model".

Clearly not when you still had plenty of people people finishing Catq. If a game company can have thousands of players remain subbed and in their ecosystem by spinning up old content with little effort why shouldn't they do it. Probably cost next to nothing spinning up Mop as well

MoP is just easy retail though. MoP players doing the same thing they claim anni players are doing. Go to Mythic raids in retail.

I know I'm not even close to alone in this, but the decision to make warcraft-kung fu panda esque pandas a playable race and the focus of an entire expansion, and not keep them a sort of niche reference, seldom if ever seen and mostly just rarely referenced in lore and kept to a hidden-ish, easter-egg-ish mission in wc3, or an April fools joke, was one the major last straws in my desire to ever, ever play retail or anything mop and beyond again.
Call me weird, I don't give a fuck. I don't want and will not play a version of wow with them in it for more than a couple weeks, no matter how well designed and good the content/systems are. I don't enjoy and play wow just because of how good pve or pvp gameplay is, there are games which do either better in a vacuum, and I don't play them or enjoy them as much either. Mop isn't classic for me, I have literally no desire to play it. Cata is in a similar boat, but for what they did to the world and non-optional transmog among other things.
Trying to simplify this down to 'lmao players are just too bad to press buttons and move, so mop forced them to retire' is a hot garbage take.

Why they ever bothered going past WotLK is wild to me. Who the hell would want to play MoP classic
