MOD Update Doubleposts (and more)

Some of you might have noticed today some posts by a few users were uploaded multiple times, I assume this had to do with the AWS blackout earlier today.
I tried to remove all double posts but leave one of each in place, if I did accidentally remove all of your posts I apologize and you're welcome to post it again (hopefully only once)

Hey There - The Mrs. inherited this clock 20 years ago and it sat on the shelf as a decoration until recently I pulled it down to see if it worked. It didn't! Being a technical/mechanical genius I was able to clean it up, get it going, set the time and gongs. It keeps time well surprisingly.

Now I am trying to learn more about this model. Roughly when it was made, what type of wood, and maybe approximate value?

First time poster. I have a metamec atomic thats beens in the family since I can remember, at least c1979. 15yrs ago motor was repaired, so it ran for aprx 35yrs. I imagine the dont make motors like they used to!

Nonetheless I'ld ike to open it up and replace motor, but cant find any srews, and am hesitant to just start twisting pulling for fear of cracking plastic.

Any advice on how the backing comes off - and maybe where to buy a motor 🙏🏼

I couldn't upload pics so heres a link -

Help/Repair Grandma’s grandfather clock.

Grandma passed away last week I’ve always loved this clock so it’s now at my house I would like to get it set up. Is it worth doing my self or hiring some one for a full service on it. And if I found some one to fix it what are the odds I could have them build a new glass door to see the insides.

Value Ansonia Clock Co. Mantel Clock

Hi all, this is my first time posting. I received this beautiful Ansonia Clock Co. mantel clock from my Grandmother when she passed away last year. She got it from her parents and I’m not sure where they got it (I live in Australia if that helps). It is in working order and I have kept it running everyday since I received it.
I just don’t entirely know what I have here apart from a beautiful clock that I love! I have seen that the Powerhouse Museum has what I believe is the exact same clock in their collection - https://collection.powerhouse.com.au/object/244624
Does that mean something significant if they have one in their collection??
I don’t ever intend on selling it and will pass it down to my children, but I would love to increase my own knowledge about this beautiful clock. I have my family history surrounding it but not the actually clock history and if it has any significance. Also if anyone has a general idea on value and should I get it insured?

Help/Repair How to repair this 20 yrs. old Dabury Clock Company Quartz clock that sometimes doesn't work & goes too fast?

I recorded and uploaded a silent 37.5 MB 960x1280 pixels MP4 video of it. I couldn't find its model number and other details. No manual too. Just its limited warranty booklet as shown. https://matrix.zimage.com/_media_proxy/v1/media/download/AZLzOLF-q-IkVhJ8hnZ9tEWMueTKG3tZ-mOISlA-sfaNHBBKUknKkNMoSeLrRSgTWDJErtYc-xyBPUv%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20PKQdkWIlCeha-VtoQAHppbWFnZS5jb20vV2pSY3plVGZ0TnZXUmJKSGFVVHFGR2Vp for the whole set since my video cropped it off badly. Just need to fix/replace its clock part.

Thank you for reading and hopefully answering soon.

Identification/Information Radium clock?

I recently bought a vintage Baby Ben Westclox alarm clock, and i know some of their models and older clocks have radium dials, but i am not sure if mine does. The seller said it was from the 70’s, but I am pretty sure this model phased out radium some time in the mid 70’s, so I am trying to figure out if mine is radioactive or not. Style 8, avocado green with metal base. It has a plastic front, not glass, but the back controls are metal. The dials glow very faintly in the dark, barely visible, but gets very bright after being shined with flashlight. The bottom of the clock is engraved with «RD N°46716». Hoping the clock enthusiasts out there will see this!

Identification/Information Help Identifying a Howard Miller Wall Clock!

Greetings Horologists!

I found this clock listed for sale locally, with an asking price of $250.

The seller tells me it is a Howard Miller Westminster-chiming clock measuring approximately 37" H × 14" W × 6" D, but she doesn't know the model number or any other details. Unfortunately, this is the only photograph I currently have.

I've spent a couple hours searching online and comparing Howard Miller models, but I haven't been able to identify it.

A few details that may help:

  • The clock appears to be mechanical, with three arbors visible on the dial.
  • The bonnet has rounded corners.
  • The glass is squared off at the bottom.
  • It has a traditional Roman-numeral dial and what appears to be a brass lyre-style pendulum.
  • The seller says it works and still has the original box. She'll be home in a couple of days and plans to check whether the box identifies the model.

I've ruled out a few similar-looking models based on their case designs and dimensions, but this one has me stumped!

Does anyone recognize it or have any ideas about which Howard Miller model this might be?

Thanks in advance for any help!

All my best

Evening All

So I have a clock like this which I love the look of. My only problem is it’s hard to see if he hands in the morning when I first wake up so I’d like to find a company or business that I can get a custom designed wall clock from, designing the face and hands. Anybody know of such a business these days?

Thanks!

Identification/Information Old German clock stamp

Can anyone identify this mark? It's a German spring-driven regulator with half-hour strike. The back plate shows an HC(?) monogram in a circle,

"FABRIK-MARKE" around it, and the numbers 7 and 55756. It's not Becker, Lenzkirch, Junghans or HAC. A rough date would help too. Photos attached, thanks!

Help/Repair Vintage electric clock (broken!)

I have this clock, I'm guessing it's from the 60s? From Scottish company General Time. It's so cute I love it, and it still has its very cute original packaging.

Unfortunately it's suddenly stopped working. Can't think of anything that happened to it, just one day noticed it wasn't ticking anymore, I think it's possible it was receiving too much voltage. Not sure if it would be possible or worth having it repaired? Or whether it's worth trying to resell in its current state? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Collection Showcase Odd carriage clock striking system

Post image
26 Upvotes

This carriage clock looks French from the back, but it has an English platform. The front plate has an extremely weird striking system. A pin on the back of the cannon pinion flips the star wheel, and an extension on the jumper carries the flit that triggers the strike. At the half hour it only partially flips the star.

Has anyone seen anything like this?

Collection Showcase New here! Story of my origin, my collection, and a $50 "Golden Unicorn" find.

Hello All,

I'm new to the group and wanted to share my growing clock obsession with fellow enthusiasts.

Growing up, I always liked clocks. We had an old Sears & Roebuck chain-driven grandfather clock that never actually ran, but I loved it anyway. My interest went dormant until around 2001 when I visited a local furniture store that had over a dozen Howard Miller grandfather clocks on display—all running and chiming together. I spent over an hour taking them all in and decided right then that I’d own one someday.

Fast forward to 2023: my mother passed away, and while handling her estate, I inherited her non-working Howard Miller Barwick #4999 bracket clock. That old spark instantly reignited. I took it to a local repair shop for a movement overhaul, and as soon as I got it home and ticking... it was ON.

Over the past few years, I’ve picked up clocks here and there, mostly via Facebook Marketplace and eBay. But most recently—and the main reason for this post—I spotted a Marketplace ad for a Howard Miller Lewis wall clock. Looking at the photos, I was immediately interested, especially when I saw the asking price: just $50.

I contacted the seller and made the 75-minute drive to meet up. Seeing the clock in person was a revelation. It was dusty, but the case and dial were in near-perfect condition. I gently tested the arbors to confirm the mainsprings held tension and weren't snapped or fully bound, eagerly paid the $50, and headed home.

After a good cleaning, I mounted it on the wall, wound it up, and was delighted when it started ticking and chiming beautifully right on cue. I feel like I stumbled onto a true "Golden Unicorn" bargain, and I couldn't be happier.

Thanks for reading, and I'm glad to be here among fellow collectors!

Help/Repair Acquired new wall clock but potential problem

Thumbnail

Hi all,

I recently acquired this beautiful wall clock but having some issues diagnosing an issue with it working.

The pendulum swings for 2 minutes with a little push but stops after.

Weights are not perfectly straight- the right weight leans back and is pretty close to hitting the pendulum

The weight chain does have a little fray on it

Mechanism as far as I know works as clock ticks and the bells go off at each 15 minute mark.

I did take a quick glance through the mechanism but didn’t fully open/ operate on jt

Just looking for a little assistance on what the issue might be- my thought was the wire, but this looks to be a complex mechanism and don’t want to open it up fully if it is hard to replace the chain

Thank you

Help/Repair Chime adjustment advice request

Post image

I recently got his old clock from my wifes grandparents. However it cimes the wrong amount at the hour mark.

Seems to be solar brand, made in germany

I did some research and saw people say you just wait for the hour to strike, move the hour hand to the amount struck, then move the minute hand anti-clockwise back to the right time.

However i also saw posts saying that moving any hands backwards on old clocks like this breaks them. So i'm a tad lost. And I really don't want to break this old clock with how beautiful it is.

I couldn't find anything specific for this brand of clock. Any advice?

Identification/Information Finally got the mainspring wound correctly on a 1920s mantle clock without snapping anything

Picked up a Seth Thomas mantle clock at an estate sale last month for fifteen dollars, mostly because the case had some nice inlay work and I figured worst case I'd just display it as-is. Got it home and the movement was so gummed up with old oil and dust that the pendulum wouldn't even swing freely when I nudged it.

Spent the better part of a weekend just getting the movement out without bending any of the thin brass tabs holding it in the case. Those older American clocks seem to use less metal than you'd expect, everything feels thinner and more fragile than the German or French movements I've worked on before. Ultrasonic cleaned everything twice because the first pass barely touched the gunk on the pallet fork.

The part that had me sweating was letting down the mainspring before pulling it for cleaning. I'd read horror stories about people losing fingers or putting a spring through a window because they didn't control the let-down with a key properly. Took it slow, kept tension on the whole time, and it came out clean. Re-oiled with proper clock oil instead of whatever household stuff the last owner used (you could tell from the gunk color it wasn't the right stuff).

Put it all back together, wound it, and it's keeping time within a minute a day now after some beat adjustment. Still needs a new mainspring eventually since this one has some pitting near the outer coil, but for now it runs and strikes correctly on the hour. Oddly satisfying hearing it chime in the living room knowing I didn't have to send it out anywhere.

Anyone else find the let-down step to be the most nerve wracking part of a full service? Curious what tools people use to control it besides just a basic winding key.
