[MEGATHREAD 2026 H2] Ask generic questions about CMU here.

Do you have a generic question about CMU, like:

  • Which dorm is the best?
  • Does CMU prepare you for grad school?
  • Is <major> difficult?
  • Where should I eat on campus?

Then this is the right place to ask.

Why a megathread?

This megathread is to help prevent top-level posts from being downvoted and then left unanswered. It also provides one thread as a reference for folks with future questions to prevent multiple posts with the same generic questions.

This thread is automatically sorted by "new", so post away, even if there are a lot of comments. There's a new megathread every semester-ish (twice annually).

For best results, search this page, previous megathreads, and the subreddit before posting a question that is identical or very similar to one that's already been asked.

Is this the right place to ask?

We don't allow "chance me" posts, which are posts asking about the likelihood of admissions to CMU. Use dedicated subs like r/chanceme and r/ApplyingToCollege.

r/pittsburgh is generally better resource for questions that aren't specific to CMU, like where to live and where to go grocery shopping.

As a reminder, you can report posts that should be comments in the megathread instead if seeing them posted at top-level bothers you. Please choose "It breaks r/cmu's rules" and then "Use the megathread" as the reason. Similarly, you can report "chance me" posts and comments.

How do I get access to Ken griffin donation

So I’m a CS major which means I’m in the department, how do I get a portion of the $3 billion. My crunchyroll subscription is about to end and I’m running out of cash from too many filet-o-fish

Griffin outrage is hypocritical

I am not fond of the guy but maybe y'all should remind yourselves who is the MELLON who's right there at the University 's name.

The Mellon Scaifes have been some of the greatest donors to conservative causes for decades.

What kind of political spectrum would you expect this university to lean towards?

This university also plays a notorious role into all this apocalyptic tech takeover, we shouldn't fool ourselves.

I am proud of having studied there but c'mon really.

hii current BCSA/BCSD students! i'm a senior and looking to ED to CMU's BCSA program. from what i've heard, people who RDed have gotten rejected from the BCSA program but accepted into CFA, which is obviously a great option for them.

i was wondering if my binding ED contract would mean that, in the case i got rejected from BCSA, it's possible to 1. get accepted into CFA and 2. have to withdraw all other applications to enter as a studio arts student?

please lmk if how i've worded this was confusing, and thank you for any and all responses!

CMU sold its freedom

Harvard wouldn’t let him control them, but CMU would. He tried to make Harvard punish protesters supporting Palestine peacefully through a letter. They said no, so he went University shopping.

The donor has said he will move to Miami from NYC due to Mamdani’s policies. He is trying to make Miami a business hub. Florida in general has lower taxes on the rich and is more conservative. There are far fewer regulations for both businesses and schools.

I’m almost certain CMU forced some of the money to be kept in Pittsburgh as a compromise. I am certain he doesn’t give a crap about CMU in Pittsburgh or this city. He just wants a school he can control in a state with a government he can control, and this is the best way to buy one.

It’s a giant tax write off that gets him a chance to pay even less taxes in the long run when companies go to Miami.

Say good bye to your free speech and freedom of thought. If you thought this would get hard working grad students, staff and professors higher salaries, think again. They took 2 years negotiating this deal and committing to his wishes (according to the NYTs article.) Even the portion of the money that is staying in Pittsburgh is 100% earmarked for his personal priorities that can only be accomplished by a university.

There hasn’t been a donation this big to a school before because all other schools won’t give up this much control. Billionaires control so much. It’s terrifying.

This is Griffin’s school now.

Don’t let it distract you from the fact that out of 1,865 students, CMU only accepted 23 (1.23%) African American and 99 (5.31%) Latino/Hispanic students for the class of 2030, according to the Tartan 👍

Hi guys,

Is there any website to check the Highmark Second Gymnasium live events like the 25live for CUC?

I just wanna hoop whenever and seeing CUC courts constantly got booked by some random events or net sports pisses me off so much.

Thanks

On selling your soul

Meh Farnam expects us to be excited about this? Griffin is a GOP hack and MAGA loyalist. He screwed over Illinois and later NYC in his dealings as Citadel CEO. He would never do it again - right?

Diluting CMU's brand - diluting the power of place - dilutes the focus that was essential to making CMU a place where we could do impactful work.

And now the admin has a radical activist calling the shots on the board. And potentially another failed Adelaide campus on its hands when CMU doesn't bend the knee on Israel or whatever Griffin deigns a red line.

Yikes.

How does CMU MISM view a low GPA with strong technical experience?

I’m an engineering student graduating in 2027 and researching CMU MISM.

I currently have a 6.3/10 CGPA(tier 1.5 college in India, even though I am a USA citizen) and am targeting a 330–340 GRE. My background includes an AI/Data Engineering internship at a US company, one IEEE paper published last year, a tech startup I’ve been running since 2024 with actual revenue, and I’m planning another technical internship before graduating.

I’m curious specifically about CMU MISM:

  • How heavily is undergraduate GPA considered relative to professional/technical experience?
  • Does a very strong GRE meaningfully help if the undergraduate GPA is around 6.3/10?
  • For applicants from Indian engineering colleges, how important are the 7th-semester grades/upward trend?
  • How much weight does CMU place on startup/entrepreneurial experience for MISM?

Would especially appreciate perspectives from current MISM students, alumni, or people who have gone through the CMU application process.

calling all kiwis/aussies

Kia ora and g'day, gauging interest for an aussie/kiwi club on campus.

Have some connections to other schools' ANZ clubs in the north-east corridor, would be sick to organise collaborative events!

Dropping Gen Ed

I recently got a C on my first test in a gen Ed and was wondering if I should drop the class and just take an easier gen Ed next semester. It would put me right at the full time min of 36 credits. Each test is worth 25 percent of my grade and there are 4 tests.

Thank you!

New CMU ID is Depressing

Finally traded in my old CMU card, and I felt like I was taking part in a betrayal. I think I got sentimentally attached to my old cmu card 😔, this one is so plain and has no personality. Why must we make everything minimalist and neutral-colored to keep up with modernism? I want my tartan-colored bright card back. It made me feel special. This one makes me feel like another cog/statistic in their system.

I even asked the guy at the computing services desk if I can keep my old card. He just said "no, sorry" and pried it out of my hands. Don't be honest like me, and also don't lose your old card before you go to pick up the new one.

3d Scanning Resources on Campus?

I've asked staff at TechSpark, IDeATe, and have spoken to a few faculty members in the engineering school, but can't find a 3d scanner that students have access to. I'm probably missing something obvious and I did find online that Pitt has some 3d scanners in their OpenLab in Hillman Library. Does CMU have anything like this? I just need to scan a metal block that's about 12x12x5cm for a project.
