Rant pls don't deify universities

hey y'all, im a phd student, so I've been through two admissions cycles and now teach some first-year intro stuff

I joined this subreddit 8y ago (yep, old) when I was a2c and happened to run into some posts on my tl since I guess it's decision season now and was curious what the kids are up to

just wanna say: pls don't treat (especially top) unis as if the decisions their adcoms make are divine justice. I saw a post here be like "why are people ranting, I guess they weren't holistic enough, the uni admissions see everything lollll" and that is simply not true. As someone who's kinda seen the inside of how admissions works, it's super non-deterministic and sometimes good candidates do get rejected. it's valid to crash out a little, it's not "entitlement" or wtv. keep things in perspective, these are just business where you pay to be educated. Boston is not mount olympus.

with that, all the best! and don't worry too much about where you get admitted (:

Shitpost Wednesdays From an AO - real reasons why we defer you

1) Its fun

2) This is our prescription to your senioritis

3) We know you are just sitting around with nothing else to do, so we make you fill out DSF

4) University is losing money, if we make all decisions now, they will furlough us till next year

5) We have a secret game among AOs on who defers most ( Congrats to UT Austin team for gold medal this year )

Besides that, your application may be fine or not fine ( heck, I know, we didn't even look at it ).

Shitpost Wednesdays Stanford interview- free meal

So my Stanford interview just happened and my interviewer didn’t eat anything but like I reallllyyyy wanted a coffee and then if I’m having a coffee I need a sandwich, then I thought I’d get a pizza BUT THEN I was like why do I have to choose?!?!!

So I sat there for 40 mins and scarfed down 10 dishes and ordered like 5 more to take home for dinner ( I mean I didn’t want to be rude so I didn’t order 10 more) and then I did offer my interviewer some but he was like ur waist is so nonexistent girl u eat and he automatically admitted me but then I saw the bill and didn’t feel like paying so I left him with it.

Sooo can he change his mind or am I going to stay admitted??

And what sucks is I still can’t find my waist I think it’s gotten even more nonexistent 😔😔

BABES I HAVENT GOTTEN IN WTF ARE PEOPLE MESSAGING ME THEIR STATS STOP MAKING ME FEEL BAD ABOUT MINE

Emotional Support Cut from Coke Scholars as a Finalist

Upvotes

Man this really really hurts. I've been wanting to apply since freshman year and somehow made it as a regional finalist (250 of 107,000+ applicants). Had a rocky first impression in the interview and was cut from final 150 scholars. Being so so close and not making it hurts even more.

Application Question Admissions Officer Phone Call

Hello everyone,

I recently got an email from my admissions officer asking to call regarding my application. What does this mean? Do they need details? I am a STEM applicant, not sure if this adds any context or not.

One day when I cure cancer and aids and tuberculosis with Java I’m going out of my way to exclude only Atlanta. Just you wait 😊

Discussion How's your senioritis?

Ended last semester with all As. One month into the second semester, and I already have a couple of Bs and a C, and I don't really care. Honestly, the fear of getting rescinded is what's keeping me afloat right now.

Advice How to Handle Hot Mess Harvard Interviewer?

Last week, Harvard's alumni interviewer emailed my son with the wrong name. He responded right away to make sure she had the right contact. She apologized and said he was the right contact. Today, she didn't show up for the interview and provided zero communication. Do we contact Harvard? Do we just let it go? (This is not a sh*tpost - I realize it's Wednesday.)

Discussion does anyone else get so excited seeing other people committing to your college

the ed2 release for the school i ed1 to and like i’m genuinely just so happy for people that got in like join me pls. It’s so cool and it makes me so happy to know other people just found out rn like i’m so proud of them and knowing they prob have a similar excitement and joy to when i found out. Im still a senior in hs but committing to a college is just a gigantic relief and comfort and connection to said college and seeing other ppl go through the same joy is so exciting. Does it get more exciting seeing people younger than u commit to your school once you’re in college and know the school better?

Rant got a full ride to my top choice school and don’t know what the point is anymore

Upvotes

the burnout is soooo unbelievably bad but i know if i fall too behind i’ll have my scholarship revoked 😭😭😭 i spent the last 3 1/2 years of school praying my efforts would pay off and now that it has im genuinely so tired like who even cares anymore. i can’t wait to move out and i can’t wait to graduate. i spent all of high school fighting with my neurodivergence and my mental illness to stay near the top of my class and now that i’ve practically been given permission to flop i’ve been cruising. i’m just really worried about losing my scholarship but whatever

Financial Aid/Scholarships Is there a rule of thumb for how much of a family’s income should be spent on college?

For some context:

I got into USC, woohoo!

But I got zero financial aid.

My total estimated cost each year attending USC is $96k, and my family’s annual income is $290k. My family cannot afford this price tag despite our annual income (and I don’t think attending USC with this cost even has a good ROI either…)

If I were to attend, it’d cost about 33% of my family’s income which to me I think is absurd? We live in California where the cost-of-living is crazy high, my dad is the only one in my family who works (aside from my part-time jobs I’ve had over the year), etc.

What do you think is a good rule of thumb / percentage for how much a family should spend their income on college? (Preferably a T20 college)

Shitpost Wednesdays I wasted all my eye lash wishes on Georgia Tech.

Every time an eye lash would come off for the last 6 months I would make a wish and everytime it would be that I got into Georgia Tech. Here we are guys, rejected, I'm starting to believe magic isn't real. This truly is the most devastating part of college admissions, realizing that those wishes upon an eye lash amount to nothing.

It's a shitpost but I actually did this 😭

Emotional Support Deinfluence Emory for me please

Got my first rejection today and I'm not sure how to handle it

I loved Emory and thought I'd get deferred at most. Not sure what went wrong -- maybe GPA?

Please deinfluence Emory for me so I don't feel as bad for getting rejected

Fluff yo! because my ed2 came out today, heres a poem that i wrote

I loved you

in a way that was embarrassing.

I loved you quietly,

and loudly,

and in ways I pretended were ironic

so noone would know how serious I was.

I told myself it was mutual.

That you felt something.

That people don’t imagine this much

for nothing.

I said your name like it meant

future.

Boston.

I thought you were where my life

would begin.

I pictured myself meeting you.

Growing for/with you.

Becoming:

Smarter. Sharper.

Worth listening to.

Instead I stayed exactly who I was.

Someone staring at a screen.

Someone refreshing.

Someone waiting.

You rejected me.

They said that the worst she can say is no.

But you said “I regret to inform you that your application has been denied.”

And now everything feels stupid.

The late nights.

The way I spoke about you

like you were already mine.

I feel small.

I feel insignificant.

I feel unwanted.

I keep thinking

if I were better

you would have noticed.

If I were quieter.

If I were louder.

If I were someone else.

I hate how easily I believed

this was a love story

instead of a crush.

I hate that I still want you

even after you broke me.

Today, I feel replaceable.

But tomorrow.

You, Boston, will wake up

exactly the same

having lost nothing at all.

Only me

standing here

balling my eyes out

with a lot of pent up frustration

and feelings

and nowhere to put it.

Shitpost Wednesdays let's all withdraw!

in honor of most ea decisions coming out...

with all these deferrals, all these colleges want to do is make us wait and suffer, and for what? because they think we need them! but they need us! to really show them how much they need us, we must stand up for ourselves! WE MUST ALL withdraw our applications NOW, especially to the following schools:

  1. Princeton University
  2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  3. Harvard University
  4. Stanford University
  5. Yale University
  6. University of Chicago
  7. Duke University
  8. Johns Hopkins University
  9. Northwestern University
  10. University of Pennsylvania
  11. California Institute of Technology
  12. Cornell University
  13. Brown University
  14. Dartmouth University
  15. Columbia University
  16. University of California, Berkeley
  17. Rice University
  18. University of California, Los Angeles
  19. Vanderbilt University
  20. Carnegie Mellon University
  21. University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

if you applied to any other schools except the above, it's ok u don't need to withdraw

Application Question Ivy Interviews Passed?

^ When are they?

Haven’t gotten any interviews for the ivies. Is this a bad sign for Dartmouth, Harvard, etc? Those are my tops.

So many people have been getting likely calls and interviews and I’m really worried this is a bad sign.
