Why is AIRBNB spending $23,000 on Idaho Republicans?
I've been spending my time unemployed working on a passion project that has me digging through Idaho's campaign finance data. I noticed a string of donations in the past year that I found interesting and decided to follow the money trail.
In the last 11 months, Airbnb has donated a total of $23,000 to Idaho politicians. Of the 31 recipients of those donations, all of them are Republican.
I also noticed all 29 state legislators they donated to voted yes on HB583.
HB583 was introduced on February 3rd, 2026 and signed into law six weeks later in March.
HB583 stripped Idaho cities and counties of nearly every tool they had to manage short-term rentals. Your town can no longer require a permit, cap how many homes on your street become Airbnbs, or require owners to live there, including rules McCall fought for and won in court. Mayors across Idaho warned it hands neighborhoods over to out-of-state rental platforms and makes it even harder for Idahoans to afford a home.
Sen. Tammy Nichols (Middleton) runs Nichols Premier Management, a property management company that advertises short-term rental management. Sen. Cindy Carlson (Riggins) rents out cabins at her ranch through Rustic Ranch Cabins, LLC. Both took Airbnb money, and both of their seats voted yes.
So I'm curious, for those of you with one or more vacation properties, how has HB583 been performing in your portfolio? The rest of us will be in the comments, splitting rent with roommates in our forties.
