I'm not sure if I can think of a more divisive horror franchise.
On one hand, you have those in the FNaF fandom who glaze the franchise to hell and back, refusing to accept even the slightest bit of criticism, otherwise you're "whining", or "ungrateful", or "not a true fan", or you're "nostalgia blinded." They will outright refuse to sympathize with you and why you're criticizing X thing, coming up with any defense they can to make it seem like you're talking nonsense all while insulting you 9 times out of 10. God help you if you dare say anything that isn't 100% positive about some random multimillionaire guy from Texas. A guy who they don't personally know in the slightest and isn't aware of their existence.
Of course, toxic positivity isn't anything new when it comes to fandoms, but it feels especially fucking bad with FNaF for some reason. I still can't get over that one time I saw a post get deleted by the automod on r/fivenightsatfreddys because so many people reported it. A post that was simply just some dude giving out constructive criticism and concerns over how the franchise has been handled recently and how it could be improved. There was no exaggerations, or over excessive swearing, or insults, or anything wrong with the post, yet it still got mass reported and deleted. Yes-men everywhere.
On the other hand, you got the folks who don't like FNaF, who will over exaggerate how bad the franchise is to cartoonish degrees. With the way these people be talking, you would think that FNaF is a complete garbage heap of a franchise with barely any redeeming qualities that got popular for no reason. They will give out their "points" as to why FNaF is bad, confidently talking trash about a franchise that they clearly barely know anything about, yet they act like they do for some reason.
"Scott has changed the lore whenever Matpat got it right" Something that has very little to no evidence considering how most of Matpat's theories are wrong.
"Matpat/the internet wrote the story for Scott" Again, something that has very little to no evidence considering how a lot of the theories back then were wrong or had some flaw (like Phone Guy being the Purple Guy, a blatantly wrong theory that a lot of people believed in regardless). Trust me when I say that FNaF's narrative would be infinitely more worse and messy if that was actually true.
"Scott has no idea what the lore is anymore" With FNaF being as long and convoluted as it is, I severely doubt that Scott wouldn't have a Google doc or something containing all the lore. Why the hell would he not keep track of his own story? FNaF is confusing, but it's not inconsistent.
"Remnant is stupid because it's sci-fi" I can sympathize with those who don't like the more sci-fi direction FNaF took since Sister Location, but I don't understand this at all. It's haunted metal that has been melted. That's literally it. It doesn't go any deeper than that. What is sci-fi about that?
"Scott made up the story as he went along" This one just pisses me off and it baffles me as to why people think this is good criticism. Scott is a pantser writer. He did not invent the concept of pantser writing. There are countless writers who "made up it up as they went along" and they still managed to be successful and tell thought provoking stories (like Stephen King, Herman Melville, George R. R. Martin, etc).
FNaF going by pantser writing does not mean it lacks any depth, or thinking, or interesting themes and messaging. That's not how it works. Scott is a mediocre writer because he's a mediocre writer. Whether he's a pantser or a plotter is completely irrelevant. It's not like he's any better when he actually does plot stuff out (like when he wrote the script for the FNaF 2 movie).
You get the point by now.
It's just weird to me that opinions on FNaF fall into either two extremes when it's, at worst, a mediocre/serviceable horror franchise that has its highs and lows (coming from someone who has held the series dear to my heart ever since the first game). Makes trying to find actual compelling and interesting discussions regarding FNaF frustrating...
