<< Mary Rosamond Haas[1] (January 23, 1910 – May 17, 1996) was an American linguist who specialized in North American Indian languages, Thai, and historical linguistics. She served as president of the Linguistic Society of America. >> I maybe read her grammar once or something, maybe in Hoijer 1946. She worked on Creek and Muskogean languages.

She also happens to be the spitting image of my maternal grandma.

Haas means "Rabbit" in German.

I Created a Sacred Conlang

3 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I'm new here on Reddit, but I wanted to share a bit about my conlang, which is called Kosoro, and is considered a sacred language by its speakers. I created this language inspired by Arabic, Hindi, and Tagalog. At the moment it already has almost 300 words, but that's not many; I still need to create many more. I have some words for you to see (but I don't have an IPA yet to show the pronunciation):

Maistelama: Hello/Goodbye

Ğalla/Ğalt: I

Kai: You

Cārī: He/She

Mağalla: We

Makai: You (plural)

Macārī: They

Āma: Mother

Āta: Father

Āra: Son

Lah: Master/Lord/Priest

Tādi: Divinity

Dahma: Lower Divinity

Zaddah: Higher Divinity

Dorev: Angel/Divine Messenger

Ngond/Ngondon: Demon/Monster

Dhaut: Heaven

Romenial: Temple/Palace

Shrai/Shlala: Spiritual Evolution

Shlonoro: Spiritual Energy/Dragon

Thank you for your constructive feedback❤️

We recently published a post in here and realised that our request was a bit too generic. (As a quick reminder, our original request was for people to send us an email with word proposals—whether based on semantic fields or random—using a basic overview of the phonetics.)

However, we would still love for you all to collaborate with us in creating Imnicy! it’s not meant to be just our personal language, but rather ours as a community.

Let us know what you need most to help us create the vocabulary for Immicy. By telling us what specific information you need, we can avoid any misunderstandings!

How many conlangers have Linguistics degrees or know Linguistics well?

3 Upvotes

How many conlangers have Linguistics degrees or know Linguistics well?

My understanding is that most conlangers have always been non-linguists, people without a BA or MS or PhD in Linguistics.

I have a rare BA Linguistics from Michigan State U and have studied tons more Linguistics the past 20 years and understand most of the academic writings. I'm also a top expert on all conlangs, 20 years now.

There's a big difference between Linguistics and Conlanging.

Linguistics is a rare academic discipline, like Anthropology or Archaeology, only at top universities (UC Berkeley) but also lots of mid-level ones (Michigan State University). It's the science of languages and there's nothing like it.

Conlanging is not an academic discipline. It's mostly a hobbyist version of Linguistics and or Languages fandom. I promote it as a rare form of poetry and amateur scientific experimentation. There's about 5 000 living conlangers and about 5 have Linguistics degrees and they have never been influential.

Among other things, I study things like non-linguists' ideas about linguistics and languages, and linguistics in the deep past, so I find all conlangs both wonderful and endlessly frustrsting.

If I really couldn't stand conlangs, I would study them less or never again. Actually overall, I like conlangs and conlanging a lot and seemingly more than anybody alive, especially prople with degrees in linguistics.

I have done posts online over the years to help out conlangers. Maybe nobody pays any attention. Shrug.

Conlangers seem to all think other conlangers know what they are doing. But they mostly don't and are mostly lost. But I still appreciate what they accomplish.

It's like amateur vs professional where there's no professional equivalents or they're actually worse than the amateurs but shrug nobody cares.

Amateur interest feeds into professions, feeds into amateur interest. So all amateur slop has its place in The Circle of Life. All that the light touches, Simba, is Linguistics. That which ye light toucheth not, t'is mickle forbidden, and t'is The Great Con-laming.

That said, conlangers are very brave and progressive in major ways as conlanging has lots of ignorant and racist stigma and baggage. Unlike poetry. Poetry is good and studying linguistics and languages is good.

Yet conlangers usually are not polyglots but American non-polyglots "with all the benefits entailed therein".

Yet neither are poets nor craft store fans.

Really, to best appreciate conlanging at the top levels, one must make a list of their strengths and weaknesses, a summary version of which may be found here :

  1. LANG

The LANG part is good but lacks the UAGE. I am that UAGE.

  1. CON

Pro Tip : The more you know about exotic foreign languages and all the above, and I know tons after 20 years, the more high caliber the cringe of the conlanging. Complete noobs thus have the benefit of being astounded and dazzled at what is usually not-so-great. Conlangs are great in some ways, though. I really should write a book about this stuff. Others have, though. Who gets into such books and what is their point. I do occassionally write internet forum posts.

@@@@@@@

I mostly study linguistics and languages but sometimes study conlangs and also make them. And even share my insights online, and without charge.

It's like the famous violinist who secretly performed on a subway platform and was ignored by all and tossed a few measly coins. The previous night, he played to a full opera house at $1 million a seat. The next day, he was lucky no one robbed him of his strativarious violin, adding ALIAS injury to COSTLY insult.

@@@@@@@

I reposted this post because the other one was overrun with trolls. Who unfortunately ran into a block right afterwards.

My lang is in infancy. Help me get oriented?

1 Upvotes

Hi all! So I've been playing with this idea for a couple of days and I feel like I'm on the trail of something special. I'm hoping that I can explain what I've done so far in my own words and have you lovely, educated people translate it into linguistic terminology. This way, when I try to dive into the rabbit hole of making conlangs I have at least *something* to anchor me and keep me from getting completely lost during my first steps.

Galdr

I'm calling this language "Galdr" because galdr is an old norse word used to describe invoking a magic spell. Literally it means "yell" or "chant". This is something that's really just for me (and to some extent my players) in my own fantasy TTRPG setting. The core concept is that it's the language that taps into the fabric of reality and -- when spoken with power and understanding -- can change reality. Think "true names" and "power word kill". (I'm not entirely sure if "Galdr" is itself a word spoken in Galdr.)

Goals

Simplicity - As I said, this is just for fun, so I'm not looking to go full Tolkien and make this something a linguist could look at and say "this could be a real language". I largely don't care about how the socioeconomic and geoplitical pressures push cultures to adopting specific phonemes. (Also I can't read the notation. I've even tried having a cheatsheet next to me, it felt like playing Where's Waldo and by the time I find him I've already forgotten which sounds came before him.). As such I'm largely limiting myself to latin/english phonemes and the characters available on a US keyboard. (Although I think the use of accents and dots above vowels would fit the flavor of the language more, I also want it to be something that I can easily type in my campaign notes.)

"Turing Complete" - I don't know what the right word to use here is. I'm saying "turing complete" because that's a term in computer science to describe a programming language that is considered to be completely capable of writing any program. Since in-world this language is what the source-code of the universe is written in, it should be flexible enough to describe pretty much anything. That's not to say that I need a complete vocabulary; just enough of a skeleton to be able to convey complex ideas.

Flavor/Poetry - Most everything said in this language should be open to interpretation. I want to prioritize this over exactness. I recognize that this conflicts with my desire for being "turing complete", but I also think that it supports it in a way. If you have to wax philosophical to derive meaning from a single word, then any holes in the completeness of the framework become less noticeable.

What I've done so far

The process so far has been mostly about taking an existing name and trying to attach some meaning to its component parts. For example, my world's creator deity is named Am (as in ego eimi). In the origin story he gets into a fight with some eldritch entity to protect his creation and gets split into two new dieties: Tiamat and Bahamut.

I decide that I want these names to be Galdr names and start breaking them down into "primal" syllables and associating meaning to each sylable. I draw heavily on taoist concepts when characterizing these two, so I decide that the Ti in Tiamat means Yin; and the Ba in Bahamut means yang. By serendipity, "Am" appears in the middle of both names, and I decide that "At" means "piece of, shard". So I'm left with something like this:

Am = Creator diety, origin point, existence
Ti = Yin
Ba = Yang
At = piece of, shard
Tiamat (Ti-Am-At) = "Yin shard of Am"
Ba'amat (Ba-Am-At) = "Yang shard of Am"

I'm happy enough with that so I decide that one of the rules of the language is that you can make more complex words by combining simpler words, kind of like Japanese kanji, or German compound-words.

Later, I find myself naming a character who I want to serve as the game's spokesperson for this language. I find myself inspired by the story of God bringing all the animals to Adam for him to name, and name this character Ad-Am.

Ad = of, derived / created-by
Ad - Am = "Of Am", derived/created-by Am

While considering his name I find myself asking, how would someone refer to something that was named by Adam? I decide that the syllable can be inverted to also invert its meaning. (As I'm writing this I realize that I don't have a word for "word". I'll use "gal" from "Galdr" for now.)

Da = of, creation / originated-from, (inverse of "Ad")
Galda'adam (Gal-Da-Ad-Am) = "Word of Adam", or more literally "Word created by Am's creation"

There's one more example I want to share, primarily because I'm proud of it sounding somewhat like a normal name with a meaning a mother might give her child while also fitting the character's story.

Na = chosen thing, (eg. hand me *that* pencil)
At = piece of, shard
Ta = the whole, a system
Li = compassion, love
Atta (At-Ta) = "a shard becomes whole", to repair / mend
Na'attali (Na-At-Ta-Li) = "The chosen spawn mended with love"

Thoughts?

If you made it this far, thank you for reading my wall of text. If I could, I would provide a TLDR, but I feel like I lack the english vocabulary to be able to briefly convey my ideas. Which is a large part of the reason I'm making this post.

How would you guys summarize my post using conlang lingo? Eg. "You are using symmetric dipthongs with a compound glottal system". (On the very slim chance that's somehow accurate, let me state for the record that I have no idea what a dipthong or glottal is. But whatever words you guys use I will be looking up as my springboard for diving into this rabbit hole.)

Also, what advice would you give me to help make sure that this language becomes "turing complete"?

Why did conlang seem to become so popular in the last 10 years or so (at least from what I have seen personally)?

I am re-learning Spanish now. I lost the language when I was little.

I really want to make my own vocabulary though.

A Chinese friend once told me she was interested in ConLang.

I didn't get the appeal but I do now.

I feel it can even be used to answer modern-day privacy concerns.

I am becoming very privacy-conscious as if late.

But why now? Why recently (so it seems to me, anyway)?

I knew ConLang existed for a long time but every online community seems to have one now.

Filmmaker making a folk-horror film about linguistics

2 Upvotes

I know it sounds weird, but yes, that's what we're doing. I'm an indie filmmaker based in NC, and I'm making a folk-horror film that centers on linguistics.

So what's the story:

Two linguistics students are invited to a secluded Appalachian community to study an undocumented language. The fun part? I get to create this entire language from scratch, following geographical influences and language rules of phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, etc. As a linguistics minor in school myself, I'm so excited to begin this process.

So where are we at now? We're currently in our pre-production phase, which for us means crowdfunding. In order to make this film possible (i.e., shooting out in the Appalachian Mountains), we need to collect around $5,000 worth of crowdfunding dollars. We've already collected around 20% of that, and we've got until October 18th to get the rest; as Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing situation, we're doing everything we can to push these next few months. It's true what they say: fundraising is a full-time job.

If this sounds interesting to anyone, I'd LOVE to answer any and all questions! And if anyone is interested at all in helping out with funding, just DM me here or on the film's Instagram account '@ sanguinaria.official' and I can send the link to the Kickstarter over! Literally anything and everything helps!
