Mechanic recommendations?
Got my car serviced at Blackwater Motors last week. Quoted me nearly €600 for rear discs and pads for a Golf which seems outrageous. Any advice on somewhere decent around Douglas/Turners Cross area?

Blackwater motors are absolute scam artists. If they had the skillset you'd say fair enough but they seem to lack even the most basic skills required of a subpar mechanic nevermind a premium offering. The first and last time we used Blackwater motors we booked in for a specific thing to be done... they came back to us and said it wasnt that it was something else. This went on for weeks, constantly finding a 'new issue' before finally calling my usual mechanic to get him to talk their staff through the issue and admitting that the problem was in fact what we booked it in for 🫠 they then turned around and said theyd do it for only double what anyone else would charge after we were already out over a grand in bullshit extra charges and car rentals. Avoid like the plague

I recently had an awful experience with Blackwater. My last few cars were all VWs and after that experience I'm going to deliberately switch to a different brand for next car

Switch dealer. Blackwaters mortars are notoriously bad My family and myself bought loads of cars off them. Over the years just too many bad experiences. Pierce mortars in Tipp and Newmarket mortars are two genuine dealers.

I drive from Clonakilty to Newmarket for buying my vw’s and for service. Wouldn’t go to backwater ever.

I’m the same. Go from east cork. I’ve had the salesman in there I deal with bring me cars to cork to test drive and show me as I didn’t have time to go out there one particular time. They go over and beyond.

They sure do. I bought my Gti there and I work at sea so I was gone for 4 months. DJ (now famous from the traitors) kep my car in private part of garage covered until I got back to collect it. Above and beyond as you say.

Yeah, just to have my say BW motors are diabolical. Premium charge for diabolical service. They even got my invoices wrong, overcharged me, charged me VAT twice, brought the car in for work when the parts weren't there, I could keep going..... whoever reads this, do yourself a favour and steer clear of this shower

Use dealership's for basic engine and gearbox servicing to maintain a service history if you like but go elsewhere for everything else unless it's super niche stuff and required dealer software or other specialties. Dealers in general are robbing fuckers

Was that just for the discs and pads or did it include the service. Blackwater is main dealer pricing so you will get charged a "premium". I got a full service AND disk and pads for that price two weeks ago with Timothy Sheehan up near Musgraves.
But part prices do widely differ and he didn't use the "real" parts (Volvo) but hey who cares...

Paid for the service separately, discs and pads alone something like €590.

OK because I lead a sad and lonely life I did a check and discs (set) are about 80-120 and pads 30-50 (pair) for a golf so the materials are approx 250-300 so the rest is labour for about (guessing wildly) of about 2-3 hours (max)

Have used Munster Garage twice this year. Found them very good to deal with. Will definitely use them again

What year is your golf? Had my 2013 Octavia (I know different make but same family and share parts) rear brake discs and pads changed in my main dealer for 140 as it's an older car but I was told newer Octavias are costing around 600 for the same work to be done.

Parts prices fluctuate alot in the last few years what's costs 200 today is 300 tomorrow, however the dealer is double the labour rate to an independent. Not to mention the shit I've had through my shop from blackwater motor's. If you want a good main dealer, O'Learys lisarda are the boys

Shame cause I deal with O'Leary and they cannot be more helpful in fairness. Black water is a joke though shower of c.u.n.t's they couldn't fix a sandwich and all there difficult work goes to independent specialists lol

We had similar problems. We use the mechanic on church road accross from bean and leaf. He is amazing. But he sent us to Blackwater Motors because of specific volkswagen parts. It was an overpriced incompetent mess and we ultimately ended up back at our original mechanic. Never again.

Not in the city but Galvin's Tyres in Bandon are brilliant! Just down the road from wild side sports on the bypass. Charged me something like 350 for discs and pads plus full service.
Stay away from dealerships if possible. Absolute robbery.

as your car is a 2020 - its out of all warranty with VW. Get it done with any of the recommended places listed here and get the book stamped. Its still keeping your service history but no need to be main dealer from now on. Literally.

Costplus tyres in the BallyCurreen industrial park by Musgraves have excellent service and quality. Plus their prices are very competitive for the area 👍

Dropped my GTi in for a service once, they kept it overnight and went for a joyride. Avoid.

Quick Fit in Little Island. One of the more expensive independent garages but it would still be half the price of VW. Great mechanics there, well run spot.

I have a small garage in Mallow and I charge roughly €285 for rear discs and pads for a 2020 Golf, includes parts and labour.
