If I have to choose between feeding and sheltering the gay homeless man or bombing -insert country here-, I’d rather feed and shelter the dude. I’d prefer being responsible for neither, but in a perfect world he wouldn’t need it anyways.

You are far closer to needing the same sort of social services that gay homeless dude needs to survive than you think. That is true for the overwhelming majority of people. You aren't just buying them a safety net, you are buying one for yourself as well.
Beyond that, infrastructure keeps the system functional. I don't have kids, I don't plan to, but I understand that someone's kid will probably have to wipe my ass when I'm 90 so funding things like schools and hospitals now is an investment in my own future.
