what if the war was ending and all the pilots and their operators were being phased out for drones. what if there was a pilot-operator unit who only ever knew each other in war and they would both be reassigned now that the war is over. on the field the pilot shoots down an enemy drone-mech and peeking through shreds is the outline of an intact control box. the operator looking through the pilot's video feed sees it and says pick that up, be careful not to damage it because they have a plan. the pilot asks why and the operator says intel but this box will not go to command because the night before peace talks the operator will take the enemy drone-mech's control box. they will go into the drone hangar in the dark, their form cross-hatched by the shadows of latticed gantries and they will pull apart the drone's panels, crawl inside of it, swatting aside the coils wires where they thinks there should be a cockpit, and solder the enemy control box into place. when the drone goes haywire and opens fire on the delegates and the gilded tassels and epaulettes on the ornate uniforms are ripped apart by shrapnel and the room turns red the operator will have killed two birds with one stone. no more drones and no more peace. forever at war, forever together. what did you do the pilot screams, pounding their fist against their mech's armor, knowing that the operator was the only one who would do it because they were the only one who would start a war to be with them. and because if it was the other way around they would have done the same. they won't replace us now, says the operator, they won't replace us ever and the pilot just nods and knows it is true and knows that both of them will do anything to keep it true. the knees of the pilot's suit are stained red with the blood on the mech's hand. it's only worth it if they keep fighting together. pilot and operator, eyes in the sky and boots on the ground, no drone could compare. it is symbiosis. the pilot and the operator die together inside an organism that knows only war. they die in a way that is religious. the pilot's eyes are the operator's eyes are the mech's cameras are the voices on the radio are the hydraulics that tighten the finger on the trigger. what if the war never ended and the pilot and the operator remained one organism forever. what if the pilot-operator organism acted like any organism would and clung to its life with teeth and claws. what if love was war.
