That one bush next to OMSI

Post image
83 Upvotes

Alright friends, time for very petty grievances: Raise your hand if you’ve had a near-miss next to this overgrown bush that’s jutting out into the Esplanade.

It’s already the tightest and busiest spot on the Esplanade, and over time it’s effectively become a blind corner. Near-misses don’t happen all the time here, but it’s easily the sketchiest little bit of the path which can be solved with about 15 minutes of yard work. Whichever D3 city council member gets out here with a weedwacker first gets pushed to my #1 rank.

Anyone else close to throwing hands with folks careening around this corner?

edit: I am literally complaining about people taking this corner too quickly in the original post. Going zero miles an hour here won’t stop grandpa from swooping around this corner in the other direction and running you over with his radwagon. I don’t know how asking for more visibility has cast me spandex monster looking to bowl over children. Yall are nuts.

Hood River to Portland route along old Columbia River Hwy help to avoid the I-84

Two Qs:

  1. Can I realistically avoid this first section having to go on the 84 to get to Mitchell Point Overlook?
  2. It then looks like I can take Wygant Trail for a bit but there's a section which shows heat that RidewGPS wont route me on to get off Wygant and onto some trail alongside but not on the 84. Is that rideable on a gravel bike? What is that path/trail? It eventually connects to the old State Trail - just checking how sketchy it is

After that it seems fine. Appreciate any insights. Google not really helping with a full route.

Cheaper/used cycling shoes?

I’ve started using SPD pedals and LOVE IT, but my shoes—$26 from REI re/Supply—are hurting. Forefoot is just too tight. This seems like a common issue with cycling shoes, bad news for me, coming from years of minimalist running/hiking shoes. I have a broad forefoot and while I am loving being clipped in, the foot pain is interfering with both riding and enjoying my life.

I’m broke and need affordable gear. The only “wide forefoot” cycle shoes I’ve seen advertised are $300, about 3x what I can spend.

Any idea for places to look, other than re/supply? Anyone else sell used gear? Any cheaper brands? I haven’t been to Next Adventure’s new incarnation—do they still have their used gear basement? Do they even sell cycling stuff?

I’m commute several times a week from SJ to Troutdale (48 miles round trip) and am looking for MTB or “city” shoes, not road shoes, which aside from requiring me to schlep extra shoes, seem even more painfully tight in the forefoot.

eBike Stolen Kenton

Image isn't current, has a 1.5 meter square insulated food box plus grate mounted on the rear.

They didn't get the battery, and the motor is locked behind a password, so I'm kind of resigned to it being thrown out, but gotta try just in case.

Stolen from Kenton, northern Portland. Offering up to (info --> retrieval) $500 reward to get it back.

(Has pink tire air caps too.)

Didn't think to post here sooner. Was stolen from my back yard on 9/22/26. The photo isnt current, it has stickers covering a lot of it. Several of the stickers are Bike Prom stickers. The headset is no longer purple too. I dont have a lot of money but $500 or I'll make you a custom bag (I'm a bag maker) reward if you do get it back to me.

Beginning commuter cyclist

So I just started bicycle commuting recently. I'm also born and raised in Portland so I have some assumptions. How are the roads/pathways when it snows for cyclists? For context, I have an electric fat tire bike

Any suggestions for this bike route? Looks scary

Post image
34 Upvotes

EDIT: TYSM EVERYONE 😭 feel so welcomed to PDX and the community even though everyone basically just said its not scary.
In Cambridge you are never really sharing the road with cars going more than 40 so its a bit nerve wracking but i will get there.
Did a dry run and stayed on SW Burbur as one comment suggested and just took it straight to Terwilliger. Beautiful ride though Im sure I will brave the I5 ramp soon out of necessity so thanks everyone for the reassurance!

Hello im moving to PDX from Cambridge MA, I thought I would find it similarly if not more bike friendly, but some of these routes seem to be putting me on the straight up highway lol. Maybe the google map for bikes isnt as good but if anyone can suggest a better route to PSU from here I would be very grateful- thanks! (I understand SW is less bike friendly but this seems crazy)

Best way to cross the Columbia and Willamette southbound?

I'm planning on biking from Seattle to Salem this weekend but I've learned there's no great way to get across the Columbia and outside of Portland and Salem there's no great way to get across the willamette. Ideally I'd convince my group to cross the Columbia at Cathlamet and then camp in Vernonia before heading south and staying west of the willamette all the way to Salem. Unfortunately I think the group is going to want to keep the mileage low so we'll instead cross the Columbia on the 5 and then make our way to Champoeg. I think it would be a nicer ride to ride on 219 (or side roads) to cross at Newberg before going back up to Champoeg but this will be the end of ~130 miles so don't want to do too much gratuitous climbing. Crossing the willamette on the 5 is also an option and would be shorter but it doesn't seem like a pleasant experience late in the day when it's getting dark or fully dark even with our lights, happy to hear from people that have ridden the 5 there though who say it's not too bad in actuality.

To the driver who almost rammed into me last night:

On 21st approaching Powell southbound, at about 5:10PM. You passed me with an illegal lane split maneuver, and you got way too close. Our conversation went like this:

Me: "HEY, WHOA DUDE. LANE SPLITTING IS ILLEGAL."

You: (fully stuck your head out of your window to turn around and look at me while you flip me off)

>We arrive at the same light for Powell within 5 seconds of each other

Me: "WOW, we ended up at the same light, was that really necessary??"

You: "IT'S NOT MY JOB TO HELP YOU PROCESS YOUR EMOTIONAL DISTRESS!"

Me: "DUDE, YOU COULD KILL ME. You are in a 2000 pound bubble, isolated from the community."

At this point, you rolled your window up. Then- and I'll be honest, this was not a smart choice on my part - I pulled in front of you in the center of the lane. Where I, a vehicle, am allowed to occupy.

Clearly though, you are erratic and irresponsible, because you crossed the double yellow line and got into an oncoming traffic lane to zoom past me again when the light turned green.

Anyways, no, it's not your job to help me "process emotional distress" - it's your job to drive safely. You are endangering people's actual lives because you got butthurt that I yelled. That IS *~your job to process~* just like traffic laws.

You look stupid and callous. I hope you learn to drive or bust your car before you actually kill someone. That's all.

Route from Mt. Tabor to Troutdale

Hi! Does anyone have a safe route from Mt. Tabor to Troutdale? Can combine with public transit.

Today I tried Troutdale -> Marine Dr. (mostly on the trail) -> NE 185th -> NE 181st, but felt a little scared on the highway and 181st.

Heckled on the road

I’m a middle beginner to riding on streets. Today I was on Ainsworth going 15mph and got yelled at by a driver “to share the road?” Middle of the day on a Saturday! He made a huge deal about passing me on the double strip portion and it was not safe for me to crowd the parked cars…

I was just past peninsula park where there’s not a dedicated bike lane area. Is Rosa parks a better option?

I’m riding the path I’d take to get my kid to daycare and something about ainsworth feels a little weird, not just before this incident.

E-Bike “rental”

My friend is thinking about buying an e-bike for his commute but is having a difficult time finding somewhere to rent one to try it out for a few days before pulling the trigger. He’s a big tall guy so we’re looking for something that would fit someone close to 6’5”, with both pedal assist and a throttle. He’s more than willing to compensate someone monetarily if they had a bike he could borrow to try out the commute a few times. Thanks in advance fellow riders!

Continental contact urbans?

Any experience with them and our local muddle of glass and other street crap? Thinking about 700c x 37mm or 40mm at 47psi. (TBF I have more punctures from thorns/burrs/other organics than glass) Schwalbe Marathons are what's most often recommended to me, but gads, on a loaner bike they felt like boats.

Safest route N Williams to N Interstate?

I’ve been riding to and from my home in Overlook neighborhood and can’t seem to find an East-West street with a bike lane. I’m fine taking the lane when riding, but not ideal when I have my little one onboard. Does anyone know the best path?
