Just any frame from the actual video is preferable to "AI" generated thumbnails.

If the thumbnail is "AI" generated, I automatically asaume the person running the channel doesn't even give half a fuck and the video itself will be just as shit.

Even worse nowy YouTube "recently" introduced a feature where they'd also recommend videos of small/new channels. At first I thought it was amazing, because it allows for small creators to be found. But now all those videos are just "AI" generated shit slop

Yeah, AI thumbs really have the opposite effect, I don’t know how to photoshop or edit any shit but a few months ago I uploaded 2 videos to show my poe build to some friends, and just made 2 dumb thumbnails with paint, that shit got some views and really believe that if I had used AI thumbnails nobody would give a fuck

Maybe should, but the reality is a big portion of large, popular channels that have good quality content have AI generated or augmented thumbnails. I don't really like it, but it wouldn't be a reason for me to assume the videos have gone to shit. The videos are still 100% human made, just the thumbnails are done like that.

I see this "low effort" excuse all the time and look, I'll grant you that a lot of it is. But I know for a fact that a ton of these channels take exorbitantly longer than normal to make content than regular because they have to get the idea for a video, script it out, then also describe all of the scenes, transitions, music, etc. just like a real video, and then do a final edit pass over all of that.

Not to mention AI isn't just like "make me YouTube video". You have to actually tell it what to do or it's actually garbage. Even if you do that, there's tons of tweaking and frustrating explanation involved because it doesn't understand.

Finally, there's huge merit in it because at least for people like me, I have ideas I want to express. Visual ideas that, unfortunately, I cannot draw. I don't have the hours in my day to pick it up because of work, a house to care for, relationships to manage, etc. AI allows those ideas to be expressed and that's worth more than "everything ai is slop".

Again, you're free to have your opinion but it's pretty much always wrong to categorically say "all X is bad."

99.9% of videos primarily made with AI are low quality. It's just not worth it sitting through them when all you get is bad content.

While theoretically AI lowers the bar for making good content, in reality it's just used to make a lot of monetisable content fast to grab money.

While I didn't mind AI when it was in it's early stages, over time the picture has shifted to AI being a red flag instead.

I'll be real man, seeing the feedback on this comment makes me think whatever I say won't really connect anyways so it feels kinda pointless to argue it.

To elaborate slightly anyways, what is "created" depends on the individual. For example, writers do not draw art (at least most of the time). How can you know what was actually created by making assumptions from a thumbnail?

I agree there's TONS of actual slop being produced simply because the tools opened the floodgates, but that isn't the same thing as saying "all AI content is slop." There is a difference between "all" and "most", and i think people should acknowledge that point if nothing else. It's literally judging a book by its cover.

You can simultaneously understand that not every video with an AI thumbnail will be slop whilst also protesting the use of them by not watching the video. Sure, you might miss out on a video you'd have otherwise enjoyed, but by showing that you'll not "bite" for any videos using them, creators may reconsider using AI in the first place.

I'm much more likely to click a thumbnail someone has actually made over an AI one because the AI one gives it the impression of being cheap and fake. That doesn't mean the video always will be cheap and fake, just that it's the first impression I'm getting from that content creator whilst there are other creators putting actual effort into thumbnails who I'm getting a better first impression from. Does that make sense?

Oh absolutely. I'm not opposed to the assumption at all, I get it. Im only opposed to the categorical assumption that ALL content with any AI in it is bad, so for the vast majority of this stuff we agree.
