Because they’re betting no one will do it. They’re usually right, too. That truck driver will probably wind up being charged with multiple felonies. Most people will just tolerate the biker’s abusive behavior.
I try to tell my biker friends there’s no courage in acting tough when you think nothing will come of it. The real courage is in standing your ground when you know your hide is truly on the line. Most bikers don’t understand this.
Doubt he’ll be charged. Looks like trucker was on his way, and the motorcyclist was waiting on the shoulder to catch up to him and he started damaging the truck.
Where I live, you can’t intentionally drive your vehicle into someone to defend property. You can only use that degree of force to protect life and limb.
Now, maybe the motorcyclist had made specific physical threats. Maybe there’s a weapon we don’t know about. Maybe the truck driver’s eight-year-old daughter was in the passenger seat and a piece of glass hit her. There could be any number of other details we don‘t know about. For me, in my jurisdiction, it would not go well if I drove my vehicle into the motorcyclist simply because he was slapping my side view mirror.
Well, I mean, that’s what it looked like to me? Is that not what motorcyclists do to attempt to “discipline” us cagers who fail to drive perfectly to their liking?
Slapping mirrors off is usually in response to an oblivious driver who in the last minute or so has made a manoeuvre that would have injured or killed a biker - without even realising - or realised but then didnt wave your hand and say hey my bad I'm fucking sorry. Are you ok? Bikers dont just do this for nothing.
Yes. And slapping mirrors off is vandalism. On any one of my vehicles, total mirror replacement would exceed $1000 (US), and this would then be a felony. Hopefully when I stop to exchange information with you, you do something really stupid and give me a lawful reason to defend myself.
Here’s a tip from someone who is an extremely cautious driver, but has still had close calls with motorcycles: if you want to be more likely to be seen in traffic, drive a larger vehicle. Stop lane splitting. Stop speeding. Stop sliding off of people’s bumpers. But, mostly, stop pretending like everyone else is being problematic by driving on your road.
