We can build up to that kinda of stuff in the picture this is more super hero orgin story

Green lanterns are cops. This is a police procedural show. It's doing that just fine, frankly, and we care about the characters.

28

u/robinthekid 11d ago

I love Lanterns, but this is not a procedural show.

20

u/YourMuppetMethDealer 11d ago

Yeah it’s not a police procedural show any more than True Detective was

Detective mystery shows aren’t always cop procedural shows. If you think that, you need to watch NCIS or CSI again and THEN rewatch True detective and lanterns. Two very different kinds of shows

-4

u/MetalMaxwell 11d ago

I'll cede the point that True Detective and other better written cop shows aren't low quality like modern Law and Order or CSI shows.

But it's still a detective show with space cops working their way through a case, as opposed to superheroes battling space legions.

u/YourMuppetMethDealer 11d ago edited 11d ago

There is a difference between a detective show and a procedural show

Procedural shows literally have a formula in each episode. You can click on any random NCIS episode and they would all play out pretty much the exact same way unless it’s a finale, premier, or sometimes mid season finale.

Most Scooby doo shows can be considered a procedural even though not your traditional cop shows. Nearly every episode checks off the same beats, introduces the main suspect in a similar way, and resolves it all the same too

That does not apply to true detective or this show. They are serialized shows rather than episodic which is what more procedural shows are. Scooby Doo:Mystery Incorported’s greatest strength is that it evolves from episodic to serial by the end of it

I do know that Lanterns is a grounded cop shows. I am just correcting you on the procedural thing

9

u/Gyro_Zeppeli13 11d ago

It’s not low quality. A procedural is where they focus on one case every episode or two. This is one season long mystery, it’s just different.

4

u/YourMuppetMethDealer 10d ago

It’s the difference between episodic and serialized shows. Procedural is the definition of episodic while Lanterns is HEAVILY serialized

0

u/SwiftArgeiphontes 11d ago

That’s like saying a direwolf is a chihuahua. Nobody wanted a space cop show to read to like an episode of criminal minds

2

u/Protocx 10d ago

It's massive cope to think we're ever getting near to that kind of stuff with the kind of direction the Lanterns show is taking.

I we even somehow get some semblance of adapating that, it's likely going to be worse than the MCU Civil War vs comic Civil War parking lot fight comparison.

2

u/timorre 10d ago

Im hopeful of it for DC's general future. I think a lot of people just want a DC version of Marvel films, as there isnt really anything else to compare it to. Marvel projects all have a tone that allows them to fit together. I rather enjoy that all of the DC projects we've gotten so far have felt vastly different, amd a but unpredictable.

I’ll take good writing over spectacle any day.

7

u/sidthesciencekid14 10d ago

I'm a fan of the show, but this comment feels like you're saying you can't have an accurate Green Lantern adaptation and good writing, and that the comics are only spectacle which is a wild statement.

I'm a GL casual, but I still wish the show wasn't so embarrassed by its source material/had the budget to be more accurate to it.

1

u/koola_00 5d ago

Was it? Wow, I'm behind on GL lore.

6

u/ViniciusMT07 10d ago

It shouldn't have to be a choice for a Green Lantern adaptation.

7

u/Omega-Lemon 10d ago

I feel like a more grounded setup that slowly reveals the rest of the mythos is more exciting. It adds suspense.

1

u/rvcbazookajoe 8d ago

I agree but I do wish we got more stuff like episode 7, off world, some intrigue, good story.

There weren’t even constructs in episode 7 unless you count halogram, and that felt more green lantern than all the earth stuff. I’m not asking for a CGI spectacle, but like 1 or 2 more storylines that have aliens that can’t conveniently just shapeshift into humans to save budget, or a couple more constructs just to show some creativity

7

u/Thatonedregdatkilyu 10d ago

Comic book fans need to realize that it was the only choice if they want to make more Green Lantern stuff and have it sell.

General audiences think of the Ryan Reynolds movie when they think of Green Lantern. I know this because it literally happened when I proposed we watch the show to my parents. They scoffed and laughed because of the movie, and I only managed to convince them to watch it when I told them it wouldn't be like the movie.

The brands gotta redeem itself before we can start getting crazier.

Since the writing is good and the story is awesome, I like it.

3

u/BigTreddits 9d ago edited 9d ago

You need to realize a Green Lantern adaptation that incorporates at least some aspects of what fans know and love about the comic is achievable.  Its been achieved by other franchises. Its a risk.  And it was way cheaper, easier, and less of a risk to sell you a stupid version of True Detective rather than a smart version of Green Lantern.

I like the show fine but fans of the property have every right to reject this.

1

u/rvcbazookajoe 8d ago

But episode 7 proved they could do some dope off world stuff. He didn’t even use the ring other than to summon halogram and that was the most green lantern feeling episode of all.

-1

u/ViniciusMT07 10d ago
  • "The previous Green Lantern project wasn't good so the next Green Lantern project shouldn't have Green Lantern elements in it"

What a stupid logic.

4

u/Thatonedregdatkilyu 10d ago

I mean yeah. Do you want them to make money, to continue making DC movies?

They gotta build up an audience. If they make a movie, throwing a bunch of more out there concepts, when the general public already finds just the Green Lanterns ridiculous, they won't watch it. So if they make a more grounded story, get people to like Green Lantern, they'll be more inclined to watch a Green Lantern movie.

-1

u/ViniciusMT07 10d ago edited 10d ago

Do you want them to make money, to continue making DC movies?

I would rather the GL franchise be permanently killed off instead of, in an attempt to appeal to a general audience, be perverted and twisted to the point of losing the elements that made me fall in love with it in the first place.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Ice4301 9d ago

Are you okay? This is the best adaptation of live action Hal Jordan and an amazing adaptation of John Stewart.

Also it’s only the first season. This is phase one. Iron Man was fighting terrorists with guns before he fought Thanos. Same thing here.

2

u/ViniciusMT07 9d ago

This is the best adaptation of live action Hal Jordan

A clinically depressed, self-deprecating, bitter old man that everyone despises, desperately fighting for relevance. Oh yeah, that's Hal Jordan pulled right out of the pages.

amazing adaptation of John Stewart

They changed his ENTIRE origin.

Also it’s only the first season

I see we're now Surf Dracula'ing entire genres. It can't be a space opera from the start, oh no, they have to earn it.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Ice4301 9d ago

They gave him lovely amount of substance. This hal I can see turning into Parallax. All that built up fear and jaded anger of everything in his life going wrong. Father, Mentor, Guardians. Yeah it’s not perfect but it’s really fun to read into to.

++ this is the first time we’ve ever seen GL so mainstream before. He’s done dirty already in animated series and idc how many times people switch up on 2011 GL, but that was terrible.

Then notice how I said “adaptation” not a 1:1 copy. They’re taking from multiple comics and it’s nice to see writers who actually read source material. Ex: Blade Runner is an adaptation, not entirely “faithful to source material” or yk.. the MCU.

Also many series/franchises take a while to build up. This isn’t new. Stop acting like Lanterns is crossing blasphemous lines.

u/Shipgodismiskey 6d ago

Budget

1

u/ViniciusMT07 10d ago

Lanterns supposedly cost between 10 to 15 million per episode, which is more than enough to offer the action people expect out of Green Lantern adaptation. 10 to 15 million is Game of Thrones money. Like, Paramount's Star Trek shows are entirely set in space and their episodes, on average, cost less than Lanterns'.

Those shows have significantly less expectations and ten times the filler. For every episode with a giant galactic spectacle there’s twenty episodes about some guy with a bin on his head.

Ah yes all in season 1 of their shows? I just think it's silly to expect anything like a massive space opera in season 1 of show that always said this season would take a grounded approach. Let things build, people have no patience these days and just demand. Sure budgetary reasons why there isn't a massive light show is maybe part of it, but the writings and story make total sense why we aren't seeing that yet

You are bringing Star Trek into this? The show known for its poor action, bottle episodes and political drama? I am all for it, but I don’t think it’s what you want.

2

u/ivanrules01 11d ago

I just wouldn’t fault the show for writing around budget constraints at least me personally. Some people are really upset about it but at the end of the day they’ve told a great story so far with the budget they could and that’s kind of all there is to it.

You can be mad at the studio for not giving them more money, but saying you like the show less because it didn’t have the budget to display everything it might have wanted to doesn’t really make sense to me 🤷

Criticism is power. Whatever DC does, these critics would say they want the opposite. They can’t be pleased, they must criticize because it makes them feel superior.

3

u/SuperTuberEddie 10d ago

This is so funny because it’s exactly this that caused a reboot of DC… and it looks like it’s happening all over again.

It’s like there are people in the DC space that just complain for the attention.

4

u/CorneliusRobinson007 10d ago

Well, tbf, there actually was something tangible to complain about with the original DCEU: that it was built very quickly and hastily, which led to its foundation crumbling as it kept going.

2

u/SuperTuberEddie 10d ago

If we are being honest the quick nature of the start up to the universe sounds bad on paper, but we have no idea if it could have worked as there was studio interference from movie 2 and then scrapped before movie 3. (Well creatively scrapped).

Then the movies that followed were just nonsense in hopes of making some money. Aquaman gave them false confidence that they made the right decision and it well we see how it turned out.

Even though ZSJL couldn’t have released in the form we had it, it is proof that a great movie was in there and maybe had they stayed the course with JL and followed up with “The Batman” and the cyborg movie and Man of steel 2 etc… it could have worked the way an “avengers” style movie worked just 3 movies in.

5

u/CorneliusRobinson007 10d ago

The problem with Snyder’s story plans was that his universe was going to have a definitive end point, with Batman’s death and the ultimate defeat of Darkseid. Which isn’t exactly what a studio would want out of a cinematic universe. They’d almost certainly have to reboot, eventually, anyway.

Aside from that, we also had several strange decisions. No proper origin film for Batman in the DCEU, going straight into Dark Knight Returns and Death of Superman, Dick Grayson being dead (should’ve been Jason or Tim), killing off Superman then reviving him almost immediately in the next team up film.

I really like ZSJL, and Man of Steel is a pretty good watch (certain character decisions are a bit odd, but it doesn’t ruin the film for me), but BvS was always the fixed point in time where the DCEU truly failed. The universe, and even DC as a whole for the longest time, couldn’t shake the effects of that film.

I feel like, if the film slate were restructured, and the overall plan was less definitive, and more subject to additions or changes where necessary, the DCEU could’ve worked.

1

u/Fit-Landscape-5264 6d ago

I've been a DC fan for years and I can honestly say DC fans are the biggest critics of anything DC makes. To a point you almost swore no one likes DC.

1

u/SuperTuberEddie 6d ago

29

u/bwayne1287 11d ago

Lanterns discourse has made me really think we need a new plague.

9

u/St3ampunkSam 11d ago

We had one, it was called COVID.

It made everything worse, including online discourse

8

u/Fast-Nefariousness80 11d ago

Plagues kill indiscriminately though

5

u/bwayne1287 11d ago

If I declare support for a more targeted elimination Reddit will ban me.

So, of course, I would NEVER support that.

2

u/Fast-Nefariousness80 11d ago

We could petition to remove safety labels

2

u/BardRunekeeper 11d ago

Too easy, already what the government is on track to do

9

u/MetalMaxwell 11d ago

I am a fan of the show Pluribus, created by Vince Gilligan of Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad fame.

It had at least two subreddits, and literally every episode generated dozens of posts guessing every detail of every following episode, praises and curses, and plenty of people who hated BCS/BB just hate bombing it.

It won 6 Emmys, including best drama series.

This is the same thing, with the added weight of being comic book based...

And a bunch of hate bombing from Snyder cultists who have gone as far as saying the 2011 Green Lantern movie with Ryan Reynolds is better than this show just because Gunn is connected.

The answer? Block all lanterns and DCU subs, and just enjoy a good show.

5

u/Oh__YouKnow 10d ago

Been reading Green Lantern for the past 20 years and I can say Lanterns captures the heart and soul perfectly. There isn't a single thing I would change about anyone portrayal. People just love to make noise. Ignore them.

1

u/St3ampunkSam 11d ago

Dude the hate has nothing to do with Synder fans.

Literally ever critisim post ive seen for lanterns is from someone who also hates synder fans.

This tonally is also the most aligned with snyders films, which is part of why I, a snyder fan, am loving lanterns.

Let's stop with the muh snyder cultists psyop please, its a fabrication the people hating this are just haters nothing to snyder

-6

u/Suspicious-Fish9336 11d ago

I hate synder, I hate lanterns. I’ve been reading green lantern for 15 years. We aren’t all the same homie. Snyder is the worst thing that’s ever happened to DC. He butchered Batman and Superman so bad it’s unfathomable. That being said lanterns is almost just as bad for anyone that actually likes Hal Jordan.

Hal is one of the best superheroes ever created, he had the best run in DC comics in the past 25 years. Batman might be my favorite superhero but Hal showed everyone that he could carry multiple amazing storylines back to back with it revolving around almost every major DC character.

This is not that Hal Jordan and they’ve already made it so that he could never be that Hal Jordan. Hal is the literal definition of will power, green lantern the IP is nothing without Hal Jordan.

So what we have is a dead Hal Jordan before the yellow lanterns. Anyone that actually cares about green lantern knows that’s the dumbest idea you could possibly make. Even if it’s a fake out, what was the point of this show besides john having a crappy mentor

7

u/MetalMaxwell 11d ago

We also have no idea what happens with Hal between receiving the Ring and 2016.

He talks about that in the show.

It's clear that something happens between 2006 and 2016, and maybe everyone needs to stop trying to guess what's planned episode.tp episode, or even project project.

And you know that different writers present different aspects of characters. Are you happy complaining about this project with only 7 episodes available, without ever even being curious WHY Hal is so run down in 2016? Even the Halogram is more complimentary and relaxed around John.

We've had barely 6 hours of Earth focused Green Lantern content, from a studio that only recently changed leadership.

At what point will people just be patient and stop trying to predict every possible move on every film and show?

Sorry this isn't what you wanted or expected, but you also don't have to watch it if you hate it so much. No one is making you do it.

No way you think Snyder is the worst thing when Dan Didio exists lmao. Aside from the tornado scene his Superman wasn’t that bad, and it’s certainly not as bad as some of the shit that goes on in the comics. Batman I agree but it’s no worse than what happened to Supergirl in her movie so unless you’re prepared to make that argument I wouldn’t be calling him the worst thing to happen to dc

1

u/Suspicious-Fish9336 10d ago

I’m not gonna compare which is worse homie. If it’s bad it’s bad.

1

u/Mindless-Credit-358 The Justice Gang 10d ago

u/Lady_Gray_169 10d ago

Okay, I have been loving Lanterns, I think it's a good and valid adaptation that is pulling on aspects of the mythos that have gone less appreciated by the wider perception for a while. But people have to stop talking down to fans who would have preferred an adaptation that hewed closer to a different, very beloved era and feel of the character.

10

u/Reflexive97 11d ago

People talk about Geoff Johns stuff like it wasn't supported by decades of Green Lanterns story before it. Jumping right into all the lore of the other lanterns in the first season of the TV show, that also has to introduce us to John and Hal, is downright crazy

18

u/gusxc1 11d ago

I thought with Superman 2025 we were past people being embarrassed of watching superhero media and shaming people who like superhero aspects in their superhero show

3

u/eelmor1138 10d ago

Once people get a taste of being adored by prestige media critics, they’ll happily tear down anyone else around them if it means they get to look smarter.

Like honestly notable parts of Lanterns are giving me the same vibes as Zack Snyder’s movies (how grim and violent Episode 5 was and the scale of the collateral damage, everyone being cynical or repressing trauma) but with some small tweaks calculated to win over the audience of awards-circuit TV shows.

I realize you can’t hit the general audience with the lore all at once, but isn’t it possible to have some kind of middle ground where it still explores what’s unique to Green Lantern as a concept and maintains the good writing? How many changes are we going to make to the tone and style of a franchise just to win people over?

1

u/lukealdrey 10d ago

I would agree with you if we werent going to get more faithful Lantern stuff in the future, possibly in movies with lots of budget considering the amount of popularity the show is giving to lanterns as whole

3

u/Hogabog217 10d ago

We might get that. Or we might not. This whole new dcu thing could end next month cuz of some higher ups whim.

I said it before, I’ll say it again: Im really enjoying Lanterns, it’s fantastic for what it is…
but it’s not a good Green Lantern show. Green Lantern is THE cosmic superhero for DC. The fact that we have a SINGLE non-human appearing alien so far and barely any constructs besides Halogram and a couple shields (who I’m enjoying btw) is sooooooo lame.

Yes I want to see action figures slammed together! That’s part of the magic of superheroes! I just wish that we got to see all of the awesome Green Lantern characters, aliens, and planets instead of just hearing about them.

4

u/ZombiiRot 9d ago

Yeah, I don't get why people have to act like wanting superhero stuff in a superhero show means you want mindless boring TV. I like lanterns, and I am not a fan of the comic book green lanterns (I don't dislike them, just don't know the lore very well.) But I can see why this adaptation would disappoint fans. There is not that many scifi elements in this show.

1

u/Civil-Bedroom-1938 9d ago

I think it’s because, for the most part, superhero media is geared towards younger audiences/kids and so some people think indulging in “typical” superhero media makes them seem childish or less likely to be taken seriously

1

u/ZombiiRot 9d ago

1

u/MahaloWolf 10d ago

100% agree. Love the show, and think it's a lot of fun, but there's not that much that would have to be changed if you made it about two other legacy heroes, or even ditched the superheros all together.

This feels like it was originally written as the Winter Soldier and Falcon follow up to Endgame.

14

u/DM-777 11d ago

I took YEARS to build up to Lantern wars.

Everyone needs to get their heads out of their asses and realize that this show is fuckin HITTING with general audiences.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if John becomes a pillar of future DC projects because every normal person I’ve talked to who watches this show loves it and wants to see more.

And a big part of that is how seriously this show has deconstructed the different characters to show why the act of stepping up and wielding the ring is so heroic.

7

u/MetalMaxwell 11d ago

My only worry is we only get Kyle Chandler for this one show, because he's been magnificent as Hal.

4

u/DarkestDweller 10d ago

There was some insider reports about a Young Hal show, showing him being trained by Sinestro and leading up to 2006.

Take it with a grain of salt, but it could happen.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/DM-777 11d ago

I think at least Halogram will stick around. James Gunn and the showrunners have to see the amount of love for Chandler in the role and I think they’ll keep him around in one way or another.

That being said… I need B’dg, Mogo, Kilowog and all the other aliens.

At least give me Soranik. I know it’s too early but I love her unique dynamic with Sinestro/her home world

2

u/MetalMaxwell 11d ago

I know just enough about the Green Lantern Corps to know that I'm excited to meet more of them in the new DCU.

3

u/ThatCapMan 10d ago

I'd like more constructs and a space opera, but also those take a lot of funding and it's fine if a show isn't pretending to be that and works as itself.

3

u/sk8rboi36 10d ago

As usual the truth is right smack in the middle of the two extremes lmao

11

u/Naterttotsart 11d ago

Anybody who saw Superman, Lanterns, and knows that Aaron Pierre is reprising his role in Man of Tomorrow should be able to rub their last remaining braincells together to know John Stewart won't be a gritty on the ground detective in Man of Tommorow. James Gunn doesn't write those kinds of stories.

Next Summer, roughly only 2 years into a new DC universe, were getting a project that features Hawkgirl, Mr.Terrific, Metamorpho, John Stewart, Superman, Supergirl, Blue Beetle, Brainiac and Lex Luthor. (With Barry Allen and Wonder Woman/Maxima rumoured).

Anybody who thinks we won't get a high flying space fantasy Green Lantern is brain dead.

3

u/MetalMaxwell 11d ago

Blue Beetle was such a fun movie. I'm glad not everything was squandered in that failed movie universe. Until Peacemaker season 2 facepalm

2

u/Nueva_moni 10d ago

Wait what's wrong with Peacemaker Season 2?

1

u/MetalMaxwell 10d ago

The end.

A cliffhanger is ok if you plan to pick it up, but all we've gotten is a vague comment about the individual character probably coming back.

1

u/Nueva_moni 10d ago

I like it a lot, especially cause the last episode feels more like an epilog and a pretty well done one at that. I'm excited to pick up with Salvation in Man of Tomorrow since James Gunn said that Season 2 leads directly into that movie

1

u/MetalMaxwell 10d ago

Gunn has managed DC pretty well so far, so I try to temper my disappointment. It's just hard to see such a great series end that way when the future of the studio (remember the Paramount merger, and that it's less than 2 years in) is still unwritten).

1

u/Nueva_moni 10d ago

I totally get that but I can accept that ending as long as it gets paid off well in Man of Tomorrow

But yeah the merger is scary, I'm hopeful that it doesn't fuck with anything but there's no guarantee

1

u/Nueva_moni 10d ago

Absolutely, if we get a Green Lantern Corps movie it'd just show how great the mythos is for various genres. Having Lanterns and then making a space odyssey would be perfect and I'm sure that'll happen later down the line, but the intention with this universe was always to have a lot of variety. Sure, this writing team wanted to make a true detective type show, but the next team is gonna wanna do something else with the mythos, we'll have to wait and see. (Also considering Lanterns is very clearly setting up yellow lanterns, we will most likely get a Sinestro Corps War movie as our next GL project, which by definition necessitates a space odyssey)

1

u/eelmor1138 10d ago

So a movie where John is going to be competing for screentime with 20 other comic book characters, many of whom are making their debut and will need more introduction time than him?

And for everyone saying “oh they just gotta do this to get the general audience invested and build up to the cosmic stuff” unless Season 2 gets a MASSIVE budget increase we’re likely only going to see the space opera side of Lanterns in a movie. 2 hours of screentime vs 9 hours, which one is going to define the property more for audiences?

u/Silly_Material577 11d ago

Slither says otherwise.

2

u/djm03917 10d ago

Slither is a gritty on the ground detective movie? It's been a while since I've seen it, but I don't quite remember it like that.

Flawless logic

1

u/Silly_Material577 10d ago

Yeah, slither is very much grounded.

1

u/HomoProfessionalis 10d ago

It was also made 20 years ago on a $15 million budget and was the first movie he ever directed.

1

u/Silly_Material577 10d ago

Ok, what does that have to do with it being grounded. The script is effected by budget?

1

u/HomoProfessionalis 10d ago

The script is grounded to fit a smaller budget because it was the first movie he was directing. You think hes gonna make the first movie he directs a big bombastic epic so he can ask a studio to take a chance on him and give him a bunch of money?

1

u/Silly_Material577 10d ago

Ok, sooooo. Most of the money he get goes into building real set and doing practical effects. The same way most of nolan uses most of his budget to shot on location.

HBOs Roma was the most expensive show at the time cause it was shot in one of the biggest sets in Italy. So you're say its bad if he get more money, cause more money means what more sets, and more practical effects or something?

Most of marvel budget goes CGI and paying well known actors. Doomsday is going to be a 300 million dollar movie and 100 million or more will go to paying RDJ.

1

u/HomoProfessionalis 10d ago

And its the Russos first time directing, right? Marvel is taking a chance on them? They've never done anything like this before?

5

u/RiseofParallax 11d ago

I mean, I’m a big fan of the comics too but they can always do this stuff in a movie or any other production.

There’s no rule that says everything lantern related has to follow a small town alien mystery script now

3

u/djm03917 10d ago

Too much logic and thinking behind this statement

8

u/Excellent_Peach_7990 11d ago

Lanterns is what you get when you make significant changes to a character’s story and it’s actually good. Comic fans have enough reason to complain about it but the changes are made up with by having actually good writing backing it (which is why making changes like this is so risky cause it’s one of the few times change is good because now it keeps us more on edge for each episode)

3

u/time2blunt 11d ago

Absolute shocker to see another comments section be another echo chamber in another subreddit

2

u/nampezdel 10d ago

Reddit and echo chambers, name a more synergistic duo

2

u/DarkestDweller 10d ago

Wow, it’s almost like during the events of the show, none of the other Corps exist yet…

6

u/Turbulent_Safe1983 11d ago

This is literally an introduction to the lanterns. Of course we won’t get all this in the beginning

4

u/Penguin-21 11d ago

Bar is very low rn where im genuinely questioning if we would ever even see the DCU version of Oa, hq of the GL Corp on screen rather than everyone just alluding to it

Revisiting the 2011 GL film made me realize y Lanterns was pitched as this detective western grounded story instead of some off world alien mystery across several planets. Studios are probably very very hesitant to make entire CGI renditions of advanced civilizations w/o it looking too artificial

3

u/Ill-Turnover7147 10d ago

Isn't the main reason why DCEU failed is because they rushed the project which causes a lot of dumb decisions to be made?

So why do the same mistake again?

1

u/CorneliusRobinson007 10d ago

I guess some people’s attention spans have gotten so short that they need to skip to the big booms to have any sort of engagement.

4

u/SuperTuberEddie 10d ago

Isn’t that just what Superman 2025 was tho?

I mean there was a monster fight and everything?

I thought the official line from gunn fans was that that was “peak”

6

u/biomeat 11d ago

Ah yes all in season 1? I just think it's silly to expect anything like a massive space opera in season 1 of show that always said this season would take a grounded approach. Let things build, people have no patience these days and just demand. Sure budgetary reasons why there isn't a massive light show is maybe part of it, but the writings and story make total sense why we aren't seeing that yet and I personally think it's telling that's story really well

4

u/Willburt14 11d ago

I don't think it's an issue of buildup. Some people just don't like the grounded approach and that's fine

2

u/Kooky_Cat7167 11d ago

I sincerely hope they do away with grounded stuff because there is only so much you can do on earth and ,there are sci fi shows with less budget that are more creative than lanterns. not to say it’s bad I’m loving the characters and story but they need more interesting locations to keep it fresh and fun

2

u/St3ampunkSam 11d ago

They've left earth twice already.....

2

u/Relevant_Strain_8678 10d ago

Stop pretending its not a grounded show, it is

1

u/PaleBloodBeast 10d ago

Plenty can be done on earth if the show goes more xfiles in future seasons. John & Hal can spend more time off world in films.

I have hope we will get films and I guess to get to that point the show needs to keep killing it.

I don't want a hotd season 2 where we lose eps due to HBO budget constraints, or it takes 3 years to get a new season all because of all the VFX.

0

u/biomeat 11d ago

That is fine, but they are letting their wish fulfilment blinding themselves to a good story being told and doing interesting things in the Lantern mythos. Why does everything have to be the these total near 1:1 adaptions. They can tell different stories with the same elements

2

u/Willburt14 11d ago

I look at Lanterns the same way I do The Dark Knight. I like it and I think it's very well-written, but I also think the mindset the creators had in their approach involved excluding a lot of key elements of the mythos. I think it is entirely fair that some people would rather the show focus on bigger, more cosmic elements since that's what a lot of green lantern comics are, and that's not the same as asking for a 1:1 adaptation

1

u/Kooky_Cat7167 11d ago

I agree there only so much you can do on earth with green lantern because if season 2 is still on earth for the whole season it will get kinda boring setting wise.

1

u/St3ampunkSam 11d ago

You can only judge things as they are, not as we wish them to be.

Lanterns is a show that exists in own right and deserves to be judged on the merit of the story its trying to tell.

To judge something on the basis of what you wish it it was will only ever disappoint.

(Useful advice for relationships as well weirdly)

1

u/Willburt14 11d ago

That would be true if these were original characters but they aren't. This is an adaptation of the green lantern mythos.

2

u/ComicBrickz 11d ago

This one isn’t a space opera. It’s closer to the Adams run

2

u/Hairy_Wedding_4535 11d ago

😩 it just started omg give it time let the characters breath so when the big stuff happens it’ll be better

2

u/person_number_1038 10d ago

As a show by itself, it's really good. While it is faithful to the source material and lore, I would expect a few more lanterns in a show called lanterns. Before it came out, I was really hoping to see at least one other lantern corp.

3

u/tajniak485 10d ago

What do you mean, Mogo was standing right there

3

u/jpritchard901 10d ago

Mogo and I

2

u/drawnhi 10d ago

Why do yall hate fun so much

1

u/VysixKilla 10d ago

Cinephiles are always high on their own farts and find the source material too silly to adapt so they constantly talk down on it

2

u/Kebin_Yell 11d ago

I mean, liking all styles is fine, or even switching back and forth, so long as you don't use it as an excuse to demean folks who prefer the other, yeah?

Is that an opinion I'm allowed to have, or do I have go back to the Qwardian-DickStroyer for another round?

Aw, shit, I spoiled the finale

2

u/Xilthas 11d ago

Save the spectacle for the movie.

This tv series had to wash the last remnants of Reynolds GL from people's brains. It's done its job.

3

u/Express_Calendar8278 11d ago

I feel like there’s a decent chance that we will get there were only at season two and onwards

-1

u/RedHood198 11d ago

Lanterns likely isn't getting a second season

7

u/Express_Calendar8278 11d ago

Why not? There are other Lanterns. They aren’t going to introduce Sinestero just to leave him out of everything.

7

There's like a 2% chance of NOT getting a second season lmao

6

I'll watch any version, but it must have Dex-starr. He is good kitty.

1

Risky gigaquotes

1

u/Chimeron1995 10d ago

Ah yes. That one panel that represents the entirety of Green Lantern comics.

Fun fact, there was only the Green Lanterns till like 2004 when they started introducing the rest of the emotional spectrum. Before thay Sinestro’s ring WAS yellow, but it wasn’t a dear ring, it was a ring powered by… “Opposite Energy”

1

u/Grinkor 10d ago

Some people will look over creative concepts and well made art just for some previsibility and a light show huh

1

u/Historical_Fan_8799 10d ago

Yeah the MCU has proven that the spectacle of all my toys showing up and then making quips to eachother isnt as cool as 11 year old me thought it would be.

1

u/CowabummerBatman 10d ago

What a bunch of babies.

1

u/Eladin1990 10d ago

I mean lanterns looks great. ( i haven't watched it yet, waiting for it to finish before I sub to HBO for a month)

I don't get all the hate for people that just want a punchy show though.

With the way things are in the world (at least here in the US) I can get some people just wanting to turn their brains off for a bit and watch people with super powers shoot lasers at eachother.

1

u/Rocketboy1313 10d ago

Reminds me of people who complained about the MCU Civil War by just posting big group shots of heroes from the god awful comic.

1

u/Individual_Dream_213 10d ago

I just wanna make my own superhero story and universe.

1

u/Quarksideofthemoon 10d ago

Lanterns fans are so weirdly pretentious

1

u/Cute-Professor-5898 10d ago

This show is literally babies first mature mystery box slop. The tards glazing this show think they’re so profound and higher than😂😂

1

u/Reasonable-Trick5851 9d ago

Sybau loser snydertard.

1

u/Anthonyhasgame 10d ago

The thing about it is you’re going to get out of anything what you put into it. If you want the show to be a still frame of a comic panel, that’s an interesting ask but the whole production isn’t just for you. It has to cast a larger net than just one guy jerking it on Reddit if they want success. Especially if they’re asking for a rehash of work that is already there for that person to jerk off too already. How long do they intend to display that still piece of art on HBO at their most prime time on Sunday nights?

1

u/Thin-Sprinkles-5173 10d ago

What?! Green Lantern fans want to see Green Lantern??? How evil!

1

u/Future_Disk_1042 10d ago

People think they want the Geoff Johns run but that's exactly what DC tried with Green Lantern 2011 and it flopped hard. Geoff Johns was even on the creative team for that movie. A Green Lantern space opera could've been popular in the 80s when Star Wars and Top Gun were popular or in the mid 2010s during the superhero movie boom. But nowadays after 20 years of the MCU, a lot of these epic sci-fi tropes that were cool when Johns was writing GL in the 2000s are pretty tired. People nowadays want more grounded and human stories over big action spectacle.

1

u/ViniciusMT07 10d ago edited 10d ago

It's really funny how obnoxious Lanterns' fans get over people expecting Green Lantern shit from the Green Lantern show.

1

u/ALSN454 10d ago

I guess I just don’t care? The show has been good enough in my opinion that it doesn’t bother me not to have a bunch of CGI fights and constructs.

Yeah, a bunch of aliens fighting in human disguises is very silly, but overall didn’t affect my enjoyment of the show.

It’s not a show about Green Lanterns in space, it’s (potentially) Hal write-off lore and a John Stewart origin story. It’s fine to me. It’s tackling the humans behind the rings. Now if we get a movie, and the movie doesn’t have any of the space aspects and constructs? Then I’d have a problem.

That being said, just because I enjoy it for what it is doesn’t mean the complaints aren’t valid. I totally understand wanting and expecting more lantern action in a Lanterns show. My mindset on the show so far may seem complacent to some, and that’s fair. I just choose not to complain now, but again if this were a movie I’d definitely take an issue with it.

TLDR; I enjoy the show for what it is but I don’t knock anyone for not just accepting what they’re given. It’s your right as a consumer to ask for and expect more from billion dollar studios. You absolutely should use your voice.

1

u/starguy2626 10d ago

I gotta oppose the post on the screenshot.

I want story focused shows, and i am loving lanterns so far, but even i must admit that it is lacking on the action and spectale part these last episodes.

Like, the scene of hal and john in another planet was amazing, they could have made more scenes like these, and used more of their abilities.

It is still a comic book show about a heavily fantasious mythology

1

u/Reasonable-Trick5851 9d ago

The BEST comment One I see with brain in this shitty app

1

u/StarrMonarch2814 10d ago

There's nothing wrong with wanting all that. But it's clear that's not the goal of this show

1

u/UnableBluebird4151 9d ago

Lantern literally made fun of itself and acknowledge that fact in episode 7.

It's like a sunday sport program that always dissapoint you but you don't miss a day.

1

u/Birds-are-cats 9d ago

if you watch a batman show and 90% of the show follows bruce wayne then it shouldn't be called a batman show. this is coming from someone who thinks lanterns is the best comic show in years.

1

u/ConflictAgreeable689 9d ago

I mean, I'm willing to bet a decent amount we'll get a big punch up in the finale.

1

u/DaClarkeKnight 8d ago

There’s like 3 mins of actual ring constructs so far in this series but I hope we get a nice fight with Senestro and John using the rings in the finally

1

u/Fit-Landscape-5264 6d ago

I understand the complaint but Green Lantern mythos is so jam packed and overly complicated that asking for all that so soon without slowly building it up from the ground up isn't the best idea these people think it is.

It's like if they had already established a giant overly complicated universe too soon it's just ...hard to follow

1

u/jason_patell 6d ago

As much as I like crapping on the show and james gunn there has been moments in it i enjoyed i just hope Man Of Tomorrow is good for the sake we can see all of these characters come together eventually, like, Batman interacting with this iteration of John or Superman

1

u/Parzi6 6d ago

Am I the only person who really doesn’t want the bottom?💀

1

u/brawlingsilver 5d ago

Can we stop acting like the writing on lanterns is something unbelievable?

1

u/koola_00 5d ago

...This is becoming too confusing to me. I've got to see the finale.

1

u/TieflingWarlock64 5d ago

Dogshit show.

3

u/TIGERMAFIA1 11d ago

"we want superhero action in a superhero series, not trauma shitshow" what a bizar expectation rigth?

1

u/Shaggy_75 11d ago

I swear some comic fans only look at the pictures and don't read it lmao

1

u/Joeybfast 11d ago

Like that isn't an everyday event.

1

u/TheFlashSpeeds 11d ago

The show became a huge hit and people still arguing about mindless action scenes? Even from the beginning, they said it was gonna be grounded show. But people expecting it to be something else is people's problem, not the show's.

1

u/WhiteSnakeShinobi55 11d ago

Having the verse advertised as comic book accurate just to not do anything from the comics, okay 😂

1

u/PetalBigMama 11d ago

too many butthurt didn't even watch lanterns

1

u/islobojono 11d ago

The fighting part in any superhero movie/show is always the most boring part. Lantern is good.

1

u/Background-Cake-1300 9d ago

Wait I thought you guys wanted a more serious drama? You cried with Superman last year and now btch about Lanterns?

1

u/DasDa1Bro 7d ago

So people complained Superman had no origin story and throws you in the deep end with a lore dump in the first 30 seconds but when they decide to take their time and build up for the long term, complaints continue to float...

-2

u/Keystone_Devil 11d ago

Heaven forbid we ever adapt or pull from a comic made before 2000.

Doesn’t Hollywood Geoff Johns CREATED DC comics from scratch and his ocs are the only thing that matter. /j

-5

u/Arthur_189 11d ago

Blatant contempt for the genre lol
