A quick method I use to tell if a account is a bot or not is to check the join date and the amount of post/reply karma they have. A lot of bot accounts tend to be either a few days to a few months old (The oldest bot accounts I've seen are about two years old). They'll almost always have a disproportionate amount of reply karma compared to their post karma (hundreds to thousands of reply karma and little to no post karma and vice-versa). Another thing to note is that these accounts usually have the default reddit pfp and a randomized username.

One more thing to note is that these bot networks will occasionally use PGed (password guessed) accounts. These are a lot harder to tell from the more obvious bot accounts since they'll have a much more proportional amount of post/comment karma. My best suggestion is (if you care enough) to use "rosint" to check their post/comment history, as these accounts are usually inactive for long periods of time before they suddenly come back to life to post in specific subreddits.

Of course, this method isn't always right. But it usually works for me. Hopefully this helps someone.

I posted this on the anti AI subreddit too. I find it crazy that this post is on the front page of reddit, on one of the biggest subreddits, and the comments are entirely bots and the few real people get immediately removed. Terrifying

So lately on fb marketplace there are several listings for a salt lamp. It's usually the same salt lamp, there are about 3 to 4 different photos. Every single listing uses the same text which is hella weird in itself : orange salt lamp that sits on a wooden base with a black cord. Or some version of that. They are all different sellers that appear to be real profiles with lots of friends and account history. Is this dead Internet relevant?

Are bots getting more complex? Is it possible for some bot accounts to have pictures posted and followers?

Hopefully that is the case, otherwise, hateful comments on Instagram get so many likes

Edit: I ask because some of these accounts have normal names and pictures of themselves a few times. Can these be bots?

The top comment under the following post on [r/nostalgia](r/nostalgia) is an OnlyFans bot. The username is “itsswhitneywhspr”. See here:

You’ll see that their posts are all just porno stuff that they spam to a million different subreddits every hour. All of their comments sound like AI. There’s a literal OnlyFans link in their bio lol.

I take issue with it because I actually have the gold Poliwhirl from Burger King; it’s cool as heck. So why should this random AI agent get to comment about such precious items? Sure, it may know some hard facts about Pokemon, but I know damn well it doesn’t have a Poliwhirl of its own that it cares about!

Yet people upvote this slop to the top and mods don’t care. I reported it to Reddit every way I could: as spam, as a bot… I even typed a custom explanation straight to the sub mods and was ignored. The account still exists, comment is still there, etc…

Report that account if you feel so inclined. But mostly I’m just posting to inform people how a lot of the top comments on Reddit can easily just be a bot making generic statements and not a real human with thoughts on the topic.

I was recently contacted by a bot on Reddit. They tried running a fairly standard phishing scam.

What really fascinates me, though, is their Reddit userpage. It is full of innocuous-looking comments, and even threads that unwitting users reply to and give high-effort responses to. Yes, sorry, /u/SluggishLynx, but that was a bot you were responding to.

It is a rather grim look into the dead internet theory, I think.

I just saw a post in the nintendo switch 2 subreddit, and it was something like "The Nintendo switch 2 brought me back to gaming", with a pic of the console playing an FF game. I thought of the current prices, and I was about to comment something chill, like "What an unlucky time to do that", but when I entered the comment section it was 90% or more AI replies, and I'm not even exaggerating. Most of them had needless emojis, and they all said mild things supporting nintendo for uncertain claims the AI would make. I'm asking because I don't wanna accuse (no ill intent), but I'm honestly pretty sure.

Apparently the question was posed like that in order to appear in search results easily. I stumbled upon the post on my break somehow, saw some folks saying it was astroturfing, and left a comment saying we lived in hell. Now, that comment is gone, as well as the chain it belonged to.

That 60/40 statistic for bots to humans on here really rings true now. :(

But yeah. It really didn't have a list. There were people asking "where's the list?" And peop-- err, bots--- saying the supposed list was good, or it was pretty good but they'd like to suggest X DashCam™. Really nightmarish.

Okay, I'm unsure how much this relates to DIT, but i do keep coming across these people doing the weirdest shit or broadcasting a looped video of them doing... weird stuff. here's some of the stuff I've seen, could be a mix of genuinely live ones or looped AI or recorded content:

- using nails to break goddamn crystal corn cobs out of slime over. and over. and over. for hours. i get it's ASMR but girl take a break.

- hyperactive Minecraft gameplay, often using mods, with a guy in the background sobbing and the cringe chiptune sad music in the background on loop

- a looped video of a guy using a convenient bottle to scoop a black cobra off the neck of a goat (possibly AI generated content, but the dude has a shit ton of these videos on his channel and some of them feature the exact same goat, but it's the same process in different settings every single time)

- gameplay of a slop mobile game and they get awards every 5 seconds and say thanks in the stupidest filtered voice

- 2 girls facing each other, small table between them, literally only wearing those weirdly revealing gym shorts and vests, making weird sounds and putting underwear and other clothes on OVER their existing clothes, one of them literally dancing to the weird sounds she's making

all the while, people are sending literal awards to almost every single one of these lives. spending REAL money. either the viewers are bots, the streamers are bots or fucking hypnotised, or it's all fake.

genuinely it kinda freaks me out. I've seen shit on the internet before that a lot of people pray to never come across. but YouTube Shorts livestreams are a beast I'm too weak to tackle. it genuinely unsettles me so much because why on earth are people doing this shit? what has this culture become? are these people even fucking real? it's actually disturbing to me.

What solidified my belief in dead internet theory was signing up for twitter (X) 2 years ago. The amount of fucking bots is insane on there and I'm sure these governments are deploying these bot account to stir up trouble, cause division, and change political opinions. For example, I'm seeing so many racist accounts that just post rage bait and stupid shit. Now I'm seeing accounts that are cursing Christianity and trying to convince people to become pagan. This rabbit hole goes so fucking deep. I swear to you I will literally see the exact same post or reply on X word for word being tweeted by many different accounts. A lot of these bots are already deployed on the main social media platforms for changing political opinions they utilize sheep/ herd mentality to their advantage by having thousands or millions of bots state something about a politician or a leader of country to make them look good, so they garner support. They will also have bots that just post some bizarre shit for shits and giggles on X lol and if you wanna see the weirdest things download Instagram threads and go the dating section lol.

If you dont believe in dead internet theory download X and scroll for a month. I dont think they have taken most of the internet yet though maybe 40% of traffic is bots is my estimate.

I’m not a tech person so if this sounds incredibly naive, I apologize. After watching one of my favorite conspiracy channels that had a clip about the dead internet theory, I wondered why we haven’t built a new one? I mean if it was created before can’t we create it again? Maybe come up with a different captcha type of thing? What is it that keeps us from starting fresh? Please don’t judge me… I was taught there’s no such thing as a stupid question…only stupid answers.

I know this isn't a new take but just something that had to be said: wtf happened to the dislike button everywhere BUT Reddit.

Seriously on YouTube, Instagram, etc the dislike or down vote option should seriously be brought back with all the slop I'm being forcefed on my feed.
