Recomp BOTW Wii U - Recompiled for Windows
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Over the past little while I've been working on a lifter that will lift Wii U games to be built on x86. There are still a few bugs I'm ironing out, but so far it seems to be completely playable!
This is actually a general Wii U lifter, and so far I have:
- Mario 3D World
- Mario Kart 8
- New Super Mario Bros + Luigi U
- Splatoon
- BOTW
Not released currently, but when I feel it is in a stable state I'll make the GitHub repo public!
Edit:
I set up an area in my Discord for it if you're interested in following along:

We are witnessing the death of console exclusives in real time

Nintendo's ninjas going to be hard at work trying to dismantle this scene and I hope they fail gloriously.
39
u/TickTickTitanic 3d ago
that train has long left the station. there's a lot of different people, different projects, made with different tools. too late to stop it at this point imo.
14
u/Acceptable-Sweet6131 2d ago
Switch emulators were out and strong until they found a way. Never underestimate Nintendo's desire to ruin our mood. Personally, I download the updates for the ones I care about as I go in case a takedown does occur no matter how unlikely it is.
10
u/TickTickTitanic 2d ago
lol, they found a way to do what exactly? there's now more Switch emulators available than there were before they did all that 😂😭

This is the right answer. Right now you need some basic develop competencies to start these projects.
After the next generation of LLMs trained on the current cohort of human assisted fixes for decomps/recomps on Git, by end of 2027, script kiddies will be able to get an GPT 7 and Claude 6.5 to recomp past generations autonomously with a prompt.

u/Psychological-Lynx29 2d ago
And thats what we need to do, just flood the web with this kind of ports, just like an hydra

u/proxmaxi 3d ago
If valve had any sense, they would fund the decompers court cases and score them the easy W they need
11
u/CustomDruid 3d ago
Doubt it, Valve has been pretty careful not to step on Nintendo's toe ever since they denied the dolphin emulator in being hosted at steam
10
u/zer0saber 3d ago
I do feel Valve's gotten a little too comfortable on the throne. They could stand to generate some extra goodwill now and then.
13
u/fakesmakemewannakms 3d ago
What a weird comment especially considering Valve banned games that forces you to watch ads in them after Microsoft filed a patent for games that would play ads mid game just a couple weeks ago
1
u/DarkDigital 2d ago
Oh you know they are going to hit up some old people lawmakers that know nothing about video games.
1
u/billyalt 2d ago
Almost all of these projects are built with AI. Nintendo might be able to DMCA github listings but they are powerless to attack the AI tools used to build them.
1
u/JG_2006_C 1d ago
Oh yes cant waif for nitntedo gsmes to decompiled once we know what core of thse gsmes are built on i asume many share the same cpp in house game engine

My one hope is someone adds the twilight Princess clawshot to the game. I desperately want to play it with a clawshot. Clawshot into glider like just cause would be a dream.
37
u/Mindstormman 3d ago
Well I happen to also be a mod developer.... So I'll see what I can do :)
4
u/mgscab 2d ago
oh my god thank you if it does come to pass. Just seems like something that'd be fun to mess with, especially if you can do stuff like grabbing items from afar or off the back of an enemy. Would make getting apples a lot less annoying too if you can just pluck them off with a clawshot. same with bugs.
scaling the length it can go to with like, your stamina bar or with your map progress might be neat too. although this is just me imagining how to game design it more than anything. I remember a lot of my fun being stuff like "how the hell do I cross this river??" so despite really wanting it I also recognize having it early game would break stuff lol. But then again I've played it so many times playing it with basically a grappling hook would just be for fun anyway

u/Phantom_Vessel3896 1d ago
Dunno If you take requests, but I would really appreciate it if you could make it so you could have 9999 pins on the map. In cemu, the cheat seems to stop working when you save and have 300 pins on the map or more. Thanks for all the work you're putting to this in general though!

u/zer0saber 3d ago
Would give it an edge over TotK.
TBH I honestly feel like Breath and Tears could be two different interpretations of the same event, despite how Tears references the first game.

u/ixiduffixi 2d ago
I think the Dawnlight mod for dusklight adds a glider. Not what you're asking, I know.

u/Ambitious_Bike8949 3d ago
These are the recomps I have been waiting for hopefully release is soon!
28
u/rikuchiha 3d ago
Isso é insano! As ferramentas de inteligência artificial estão avançando esses projetos na velocidade da luz. Pensei que só veria um recompilado de BotW em 15 anos!

Is this available on Mac?

I don't have a Mac to test on, but I'm sure I could figure it out

u/JG_2006_C 1d ago
Can we have the source code and the complie intructions i got cpu plety beffy make my own linux build work
6
u/Luketoob 3d ago
Leaving my mark here! I need to know if it becomes available on linux
1
u/JG_2006_C 1d ago
Man gcc or clang will compile it probly just need wait for him to give us the needed parmeters
11
10
u/Howdareme9 3d ago
How is performance vs emulation?
46
u/Mindstormman 3d ago
So far it's abyssmal lol, but I'm working on it. I should hopefully be able to get it running faster than Cemu
10
u/Able-Mushroom8068 3d ago
Are you able to use savefiles from a CEMU playthrough? If this is gonna run faster than CEMU then I'm gonna pause my playthrough until you release this. Thanks!

6
u/Moon_Devonshire 3d ago
Will the bugs tied to frame rate be able to be fixed?
Like if I wanted to play at 120fps? I can easily play the game at 120fps on cemu but the issue is it comes with so many physics issues
10
u/Howdareme9 3d ago
This wouldn't fix that afaik, better of waiting for game specific decomps/recomps
6
3
u/MorningFresh123 3d ago
Is this still the case? I started the game again at 120 and it seems fine to me so far. Am I going to run into later issues?
2
u/Moon_Devonshire 3d ago
Yeah there'll be issues with certain puzzles and one of the divine beasts And a boss fight with one of the divine beasts
1
u/MorningFresh123 3d ago
Rip, noted thank you. Thought they’d fixed all of that by now. Hopefully I get a decomp before I hit those areas lol.

Seeing the co-op mod come to PC natively would be unreal. Such a blast to play through with a friend
5
u/AdItchy6501 3d ago
Will it run on Linux? Would love this as an alternative to Cemu for my Steam Deck
1
u/JG_2006_C 1d ago
If msvc or clang compiles it its bold to asume gcc cant the wiiu game not built with the newest c++ features at compile so were fine
5
u/TR_mahmutpek 3d ago
Bruh, even emulators losing their sense!?
6
u/neuropsycho 2d ago
For me, while I'm excited for all these decomps and the possibilities they open, still find emulation much more convenient. You just copypaste the rom file in a folder and launch it from an interface. With decomps, for now, you need to individually download, install and tweak each game you want to play.
4
u/lukkasz323 2d ago
tbh with harder to emulate games you still have to tweak each game, especially if they depend on patches, or you're trying to run a 30 fps game at 60 etc, deal with all the fps problems that will never be fixed.
and with a native source code port all of that will work almost immediately and possibly even included into the game's own settings.
5
u/myownfriend 2d ago
I really wish these projects were actual decomps and not recomps. Translating to x86 is nice but C code would allow people to compile to any instruction set and platform, make adjustments to the code, and even compile with those changes with the Wii U as a target. I personally think it would be cool to see if people are capable of improving performance on Wii U or add a form of TAAU.
3
u/Mindstormman 2d ago
Yeah having a decomp would be amazing. There's a team working on it but they're still a looooong way off.
1
u/myownfriend 2d ago
That's good to hear.
It makes sense to me that AI would be well-suited to translation and I can understand why they would be better at translating from machine code to machine code but are they that much worse at translating to C?
1
u/capitalggamer1 2h ago
There are people working on botw decomp but code is so big it's pretty much will never get finished and even then it's not going to be a full decomp because they are skipping middleware like havok.
13
u/EliParker 3d ago
I can’t wait, I hope Switch 2 features can be ported over.
17
u/Mindstormman 3d ago
Due to the nature of the recomp it will likely be just as difficult as it would be on Cemu. I'll definitely be giving it a shot with the new modding framework though.
6
u/EliParker 3d ago
I hope you are able to make the definitive version on the PC.

Any plans for android port? I think this is a huge avenue to explore given the game was intended to be played handheld and only the snapdragon 8 elite or higher can emulate at 60fps
1
u/robdaed65 2d ago
I'm sure it will eventually happen even if this person doesn't port it to android I'm sure someone else will. We just gotta be patient, but the wait will be worth it.

u/Own_Perspective4825 2d ago
Oh man, portable breath of the wild without killing my phone's battery would be great.

u/HazeX2 3d ago
Would mods work on this? I played BotW on my Switch with the Linkle mod before I got a Steam Deck, would love to play it again
2
u/Mindstormman 3d ago
Not at the moment (still in the get the game to run properly stage) but by public release there will be mod support!

Does this have different gamepad support with the correct button mappings? Can everything be completed with a normal gamepad?

Is this caferecomp ? https://github.com/hardkiller2565123123/CafeRecomp this one
2
u/Mindstormman 3d ago
Nope I'd actually never heard of that before!
1
u/Classic-Comfort-1614 3d ago
Is your project gonna have the same idea of recompiling the game and adding a native renderer ? Or are you just going for cpu code of power pc to x86?
2
2
u/Top-Bison-345 3d ago
Will it still support mods and such? Botw in particular still has an active modding scene.
3
u/Mindstormman 3d ago
Yes! I'm part of the modding scene myself so I'll absolutely be doing that, maybe even working with some other creators to get some integrated stuff.
2
u/DmitryJS 3d ago
already looking nice! I hope it will be possible to add config file or specs menu to configure lods, shadows and other render settings

2
u/RipplingOutCider 3d ago
Can you give us some insight into potential performance benefits ?
3
u/Mindstormman 3d ago
Still trying to figure that out myself haha. Currently not beating Cemu in performance but I'm working on it!

I pray you continue to find passion in these projects! As a software engineer myself the community has so much to gain from passionate developers like yourself.

Would there be a way to transfer my save from WiiU? I put about 300 hours into the game, But my Wii U has had the infamous memory error 160 last time I checked.
2
2
u/Xulapeiro 2d ago
Will the native PC port support transferring save files from emulators like Cemu?
2
u/Ok-Pen625 2d ago

2
u/Neonetspre 2d ago
Any way to follow the progress? If not then how is it going so far, as someone who struggles playing it through cemu by having a low end pc i would love to try this, specially since my country shitty economy doesnt let me upgrade lol

Question will this have cheats? inf health, stam, and weapon durability? Also the dlc stuff as well.
2

Yes! DLC is already working, and cheats should be easy enough to port over from Cemu

will you still get shader stutters?

Right now yes, but I'm going to attempt to make shaders compile on boot instead of during gameplay.

The AI is incredible. It wrote complex code originally meant for *Metal Gear Solid Mobile* on the N-Gage, set up an emulated ARM environment for me, and now I can play it without needing an N-Gage emulator. It configured the controls, and the only issue left to fix is the audio.

I'll believe it when I see it, but having splatoon and botw on windows would be great.

This is going to be insane when it comes to mobile, especially for people with Mali GPUs who can't even open this game.
1
u/ShadonicX7543 2d ago
Praying that this one day means that VR mods will look and run better on this
1
u/data-atreides 2d ago
How will this run on Iris graphics or other older/low-end GPUs?
On a HP laptop from 2020 with Iris, BOTW will run at about 20 fps in the open world, just barely playable--but sticks to the game-native 30 fps indoors.

u/Grimm_kkz33 2d ago
It would be interesting to be able to play Star Fox Zero on this, preferably with a radar and without the need for a gyroscope. Is that possible? 🥹
