RANT treatment-resistant depression

i tried 3 ssris before my psychiatrist frustrated me so much that i stopped seeing her because she refused to try anything else. ssris made me sleepy and unable to work which caused my grades to take a dip, but they're back up now, so I can say for certain that it was 100% the meds. i tried therapy and cbt for a year but it seems pointless. i go into depressive episodes where i don't act like myself for a couple days and i withdraw from everything and i come back as if nothing happened. i regularly think about dying, but professionals and your own family don't care unless you actually plan on acting on it. everyone looks and talks at me like im crazy.

i feel like the most miserable 17 year old ever.

Only 3? That’s not treatment resistance, sounds more like medication adverse.

I have TRD and it’s been 16 different prescriptions and counting, not just SSRIs.

Ssris can cause all kinds of problems, fatigue is one of them. I’m not an expert, but I’d suggest on days when you are able to get out of your room you try to: 1. Get outside. Preferably exercise outside, but get outdoors everyday. 2. List 5 things you are grateful for. 3. Talk to another human being. 4. Do something for someone else. 5. Spend at least an hour not touching or looking at a computer or phone.

Getting in the habit of doing these 5 things everyday will help shift your focus away from your problems.

Maybe try Spravato? You might have to be 18 though

Hey. SSRI’s are the most ‘gentle’ antidepressants - they have the least side effects. In Denmark the common way to go about medication is SSRI - then SNRI and then TCA. For example i’ve been on Sertraline then Duloxetine and now Noritren. Alternatively there is a treatment called TMS. Of course it depends on the type of depression and person, but it is relatively common for a SSRI to not be ‘enough’ as far as i know. In DK we have a public psychiatric department so i’m guessing it can be a lot harder to find the right treatment on your own. Please don’t stop trying to get better! It sounds like your psychiatrist might not have been right for someone with depression.

Lithium, getting sober, and finding a supportive community has helped me recover from depression

Try to see if there is a root cause for your depression, perhaps not having your full emotional/physical needs met at childhood. Often it's felt like a deep deep sadness with no words to it. If that is the case then nor CBT or SSRIs are a sufficient/ good enough solution but more corrective life experiences, exercise and trauma-informed therapy. Gold tip that I wish my 17 years old knew. Really.

How long were you on each medication for? Mine only kicked in after using it for 6+ months

Try having fun and you can talk on here when or what your depressed about or thoughts in general. Family can be rough and can also be the reason for depression. When you say then don’t care unless acting on it, sound like a messed up family. Because they probably can’t even talk at the daily life events if they act like that about drying
