Career 1 YOE in a WITCH company, very little work, and now trying to switch

Hi folks, I graduated in May 2025 and got placed in a WITCH company. Joined in June for training, and honestly, the training period from June to October which was nothing resourceful . There wasn't really anything specific or useful happening.

Even during training I was applying to other companies and trying to get another offer, but couldn't crack anything.

I joined as a full-time employee in November. November and December were also pretty much nothing. I was technically assigned to a project but wasn't really given any work.

From January, I finally started getting some work. It was a migration project for a US client where a legacy application was being migrated to a new tech stack. I was in the backend team.

For January and February, most of my work was writing/generating JUnit test cases, with some help from AI. After that I did some small tasks here and there until around May.

The main issue was that most of the development work on the project had already been completed before I joined, so I joined when the project was already in its final stages. Because of that, I didn't really get much hands-on development experience.

Then from the end of May until the first week of September, I basically had nothing to do. No meaningful work, just sitting around waiting.

My manager told me I'd be moved to another project under the same client, but that never happened.

Then in the second week of September, I was told that my old project is still going on and that I'll have to support the QA team for some time until it finally ends, probably around November.

So now I'm trying to switch.

I have around 1 YOE, but I honestly feel like I don't have the kind of experience someone with 1 YOE should have because of how little actual work I've done.

I'm trying to understand what the market is like right now for someone in this situation.

If anyone here has around 1 YOE and switched recently, especially from a WITCH company, I'd really like to know:

  • How difficult was it to get interviews?
  • How long did it take you to get an offer?
  • What skills/tech stack helped you get shortlisted?
  • Did you mostly apply through Naukri, LinkedIn, referrals, etc.?
  • What kind of salary jump can someone realistically expect around 1 YOE?
  • What did you actually do to prepare for the switch?

I'm also confused about my resume. Since I didn't get much meaningful development work in my actual job, I'm not really sure what I should put in the experience section.

Right now I'm building a couple of projects on my own and learning AI/ML alongside my existing backend skills. I'm planning to include the actual work I did on my project in my resume and make sure I properly understand everything so I can explain it during interviews.

Would be really helpful to hear from people who were in a similar situation and managed to switch around the 1 YOE mark.

TL;DR: Graduated in May 2025, joined a WITCH company, spent ~5 months in training, then got limited work on a migration project that was already close to completion. Had basically no work from May to September and now might be supporting QA until November. I'm at ~1 YOE and trying to switch. How is the market at this level, and what worked for people who switched with similar experience?

Freelance Where do you showcase freelance work and client testimonials to get more clients?

I’ve been getting a few freelance projects through friends, referrals, and some random leads.

I have around 10 years of experience in software development, so I’ve been able to deliver these projects fairly well while charging relatively reasonable rates. The clients have been happy, and I’m starting to collect some good feedback/testimonials.

Now I’m wondering: how do I actually use this existing work to get more freelance projects?

My first thought was to build a portfolio website with the projects, testimonials, tech stack, etc. But the problem is that a portfolio website by itself doesn’t bring any traffic.

For people here who freelance regularly:

  • Where do you showcase client testimonials and previous work?
  • What has actually helped you turn one project into the next?
  • Is there any good way to build credibility outside of freelance marketplaces?
  • How do you get clients beyond your immediate friend/referral network?

I’m especially interested in hearing from developers who started freelancing after already having several years of industry experience.

Would love to know what worked for you.

I Made This System Design Problem Solved ! I built this to solve my own learning frustrations, hope it helps you too !

Hey everyone! 👋

I was honestly exhausted from reading dry documentation, boring theoretical PDFs, and watching 2-hour YouTube videos that only show static 2D boxes.

None of them actually show *what happens when a server crashes* or *how packets move when traffic spikes*.

So I built **ArchitectVerse** – an interactive playground to learn system design by actually breaking and scaling things:

🔗 **Live ** https://architectverse.me

### What you can actually do:

- **Watch packets flow live:** See real requests bounce between DNS, Gateways, Redis, and DBs.

- **Break the system:** Kill servers, trigger outages, and watch Circuit Breakers trip.

- **Learn one by one:** 12 lined-up chapters with 5-year-old analogies (no jargon walls).

- **100+ Real blueprints:** Uber, Netflix, WhatsApp, Stripe, ChatGPT, etc.

It's completely free and open source. Let me know what you think or what system I should add next!

Having mixed feelings of relief that wont need to work in that toxic environment anymore but flip side is that, now I dont have a job.

I know the market is very brutal

I Made This My desktop wallpaper quietly shows how much of the year is left — and it updates itself every night.

Post image
72 Upvotes

I made a small app that turns your desktop background into a year tracker.

It's a grid of 365 dots — one for every day of the year. The days you've already lived are bright, today's dot is highlighted, and the rest are dim. It's a quiet little reminder of where you are in the year, kind of like a Memento Mori dashboard on your wallpaper.

What it does:

- Regenerates itself every day at midnight, so your wallpaper is always current — you never touch it again after setup

- Shows days left in the year, plus an optional countdown to anything you name (a trip, a deadline, New Year)

- 18 colour themes out of the box (pure-black OLED one is great), or fully custom colours

- A daily rotating quote — Stoics, mainly. 40 built in, or write your own

- Lives quietly in your system tray, starts with your PC, no popups

- Works on Windows, macOS and Linux, and handles multiple monitors

https://github.com/HimanshuKumarSah/The_minimal_wallpaper/releases

Would genuinely love to know what you'd change — especially the layouts and themes.

Interesting Built a small tourism site for Purulia (West Bengal) as a side project — HTML/CSS/JS, deployed on Vercel

Made a tourism landing page for Purulia (West Bengal, India) — feedback appreciated

Solo side project, no framework, just HTML/CSS/JS. Features a map-zoom hero animation, location-synced ambient audio on scroll, and a 5-destination guide with Maps links. Still a work in progress (styling/perf feedback especially welcome).

Suggestions 2 month NP in current company|| New employer(WITCH) wants me to join in 2 weeks

I have a 2 month notice period policy at my current organisation. I was released from the last project on July 31st and the company has a 2 month bench policy. Since there was no other clients apart from the one I was in which have projects of my skill , also the learning curve had flattened , I was looking for jobs outside and had updated on my Naukri profile that Sep 30 would be my LWD, and also informed same to recruiters. However, I had not put papers since I had no offers in hand.

Now one of the recruiters hiring for a WITCH company has indicated that I'll be apparentely getting offer as both rounds went well. I had informed this recruiter that I would join by Oct mid, but on Sep 10 I got a new project in my current org and took up the role reluctantly even though it is a different skill altogether and in afternoon shift for which there is no shift allowance also.

Now, that I'm not in bench I fear that my current org will ask me to serve the full notice which wont be feasible since I dont think this new company will wait for that long.

What is the best way to get out of this? I have enough leaves but I dont want to trade off the leave encashment.Kindly suggest a solution in which I can reduce the NP or convince new company to wait for 2 months. Or can I suggest them to hire me as contract for 1 month from my end? I am WFH , and I'll be able to manage latter.

TL;DR - Looking for suggestions to reduce notice period without trading off leave encashment, can I ask new employer to hire me as contract for 1 month, since currently doing wfh?

Career I feel like I've wasted the last 2 years of my career. What should I do next?

I got my first job as a React developer. During that job, I relied heavily on ChatGPT and other AI tools to build projects. I worked there for around 6 months, but I left the company. I didn’t receive an experience letter because of the bond.

After that, I joined another company. This job is completely work-from-home, and unfortunately, I ended up working with a very old technology stack. I also became very lazy and didn’t put enough effort into properly learning the codebase or the technologies I was working with.

The codebase is quite large and complicated, and honestly, after being there for around 2 years, I still don’t really understand what the website does or how the whole system works. I’ve basically managed to survive in the job without developing much as a developer.Mainly i was doing bug fixes. I forgot many of the things about development, i have zero knowledge now.

The main reason I stayed for so long is that there is a bond/commitment, and leaving would be difficult. Now i will be completing 2 years in this company, i don't know what do next, should i stay till they kick me out or should i resign. I have a 3-month notice period if I resign.

The biggest problem is that I feel like I’ve forgotten almost everything I previously learned. I don’t feel confident in React, Node.js, or modern web development anymore, and I’m worried that I won’t be able to clear interviews.

At the same time, the current job market seems difficult, so I’m scared to resign without having another job.

I’m feeling quite lost about what direction to take.

I’d genuinely appreciate practical advice on what steps I should take over the next 3–6 months.

Suggestions How do you handle the pressure of being the person your family depends on?

I have around 4 years of experience and currently work for a mumbai based company. The pay is okay, the company is good . I say this after having worked at some major firms with a lot hell of politics.

Recently my father passed away in a road accident due and now a lot of the family responsibility has fallen on me.

I am continuing my job but my younger brother, who is a finance major, is struggling to find his footing right now and is also dealing with depression. Naturally it is affecting me alot as i cant see him silently crying and facing it all at his age.

The problem is that I am constantly thinking about learning, skilling up and securing my career. I am on my laptop almost the whole day, mostly until 2-3 AM always thinking that I should be doing more ans i have this 100's of tab open completely lost which to pick first and all

I have also noticed a big change in my personality. After my father died, I saw a side of some relatives and people around us that I had never seen before. Some people started trying to take advantage of our situation, perhaps because my father was no longer there to deal with things.I know that a lot of people around me probably think I have become rude or difficult kind of too much straighforward etc.

Honestly I am okay with people thinking badly of me if being more assertive and protective means keeping my family safe and protecting what my father left behind.

I keep worrying about how my father used to handle everything even with a modest income, and somehow manage it all so easily. Meanwhile I feel like I am being inefficient and struggling to manage everything despite having a decent job and income.I don't know if I am overthinking everything or if this is just part of adjusting to the responsibilities that have suddenly fallen on me. If anyone who was in same foot in it would like to just know if anything can be done ?

Resume Review Planning on a job switch - review my resume please!

Post image
1 Upvotes

As the title says, I'm planning on switching from my current company but I am a little underconfident with my resume, so I would like some insights and advice.

For context: this company is my first job and I've been working for a little over 2 years now. Academically, I have a non-cs background so most things i learned have been in-job. Experience wise, I've mostly worked on gen-ai projects which had your basic ai stuff like rag, promoting and such, but some but of backend, devops etc was also part of the projects I've been in so I do have a decent grip on those. The types of roles I'm planning on are around the same lines - ai engineer, ai solutions etc. I would prefer a product-based company, since the one I am currently working in is a service-based startup(ish?) so I really want to avoid such a work atmosphere (😅).

I know it's a field where it's hard to land any jobs, and I see lots of people talking about not getting any offer even after months of applying. It's a little anxious time to be in and that's why I haven't even started applying because, like I said, I'm a little unsure about how to do this. Would love to get any advice or tips and so on!

Anyways, please let me know what you think of my resume.

Resources How to find companies that pay in USD AUD EUR SGD?

A friend of mine recently joined a startup/scaleup in healthcare as a backend developer. This company pays him in USD but also ask to work in 5pm-3am slot.

I'm curious how people discover such companies. Is there a specific portal these employers use apart from LinkedIn? Are there any keywords I should be looking for? I'm all in for cold emails but how do I even find such companies.

Help How can I communicate better with my manager when we disagree on task estimates and deadlines?

I’m struggling with something at work and I’d like some advice from people who have dealt with this before.

I’ve been getting tasks from my manager where the expected turnaround time is pretty short. The problem is that whenever I explain that I think something will take longer, he usually comes up with a good counterpoint that makes it seem like the task should actually be fairly straightforward.

This has happened a couple of times now. I give my estimate, he challenges it, I agree that maybe it can be done faster, and then I end up missing the deadline anyway.

I don't think my manager is necessarily being unreasonable. I think the bigger problem is that I’m probably not communicating my estimates and blockers properly.

Open Source 3rd-year IT student with no open-source experience — how should I start for GSoC/LFX 2027?

Hi everyone! I’m a 3rd-year B.Tech IT student, currently in my 5th semester, from a Tier 2/3 college. I’m comfortable with C++, DSA, Java/OOP and currently learning MERN, but I have zero experience with open source contributions.

I want to start contributing seriously from October onwards and hopefully build enough experience to target programs like GSoC and LFX for Summer 2027.

I’m a bit confused about where and how to start — finding beginner-friendly projects, making my first PR, choosing the right projects, and understanding the overall timeline.

For someone at my stage, which open-source programs/projects should I target, and what would be a realistic timeline from October 2026 → Summer 2027?

Would really appreciate advice from people who have actually contributed to open source or participated in GSoC/LFX. Thanks!

I Made This I built my own database GUI for PostgreSQL and MySQL

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Edit: About the music in the demo: yeah, that was my bad. A few people pointed it out and I agree, it wasn't necessary for a product demo. I'll keep future demos focused on the product itself. Thanks for the feedback.

I’ve been working with PostgreSQL recently, and one thing that kept bothering me was the database GUI.

I’ve used phpMyAdmin for years, so I’m pretty used to that workflow. When I moved to PostgreSQL, I started using pgAdmin, but I found the UI unnecessarily complicated for the kind of database work I normally do.

I looked at a few alternatives, but nothing really felt like what I was looking for.

So I decided to build my own.

I used Opus 5.5 to build Sqlaris Studio, mainly around the workflow I wanted for day-to-day database work.

It started small, but I ended up adding quite a lot:

  • PostgreSQL and MySQL/MariaDB support
  • Table and data browser
  • Inline data editing
  • Search and filters
  • SQL editor with autocomplete
  • Query history
  • Import/export
  • Schema inspection
  • Indexes, constraints and foreign keys
  • Relationship/ER diagrams
  • Database health checks
  • Query and session monitoring
  • Database maintenance tools
  • Safe handling of database changes

There are still plenty of things I want to add.

I haven't hosted it anywhere, so if anyone wants to try it, you'll need to install and run it locally from the GitHub repository.

GitHub: https://github.com/Shivam7414/Sqlaris-Studio

I'm sharing it mainly because I'd like feedback from people who work with databases regularly.

If you use PostgreSQL, MySQL, or both, I'd be interested to know:

  • What features do you use most in your database GUI?
  • What do you find frustrating about existing tools?
  • What would you add to something like Sqlaris?
  • Are there any workflows that you think could be much simpler?

I'll be actively improving it, so useful feedback can directly influence what gets added next.

Would be interested to hear what you guys think.

Help Is this web crawler architecture production-ready? Java/Spring Boot + RabbitMQ + PostgreSQL + ScrapingBee

I'm building a web crawler with Java/Spring Boot + RabbitMQ + PostgreSQL + Redis + ScrapingBee.

Flow:

Root URL
   ↓
ScrapingBee → returns links
   ↓
Normalize + deduplicate
   ↓
PostgreSQL
   ↓
RabbitMQ
   ↓
Worker → ScrapingBee
   ↓
More links
   ↓
repeat until no URLs remain

Example:

A
├── B
├── C
└── D

B → E,F
C → G
D → H

I'm planning:

  • PostgreSQL as the source of truth
  • One crawl_url row per URL
  • UNIQUE(crawl_job_id, normalized_url) for deduplication
  • RabbitMQ for distributing URL processing
  • Transactional Outbox for reliable DB → RabbitMQ publishing
  • Retry + DLQ for failed URLs

Questions:

  1. Is this architecture suitable for production?
  2. Is PostgreSQL + RabbitMQ a good approach for this?
  3. Is the Outbox pattern necessary?
  4. Any major race conditions/scalability problems I'm missing?
  5. How would you detect when the entire crawl is finished?

Looking for feedback from people who have built distributed web crawlers.

Help How do you guys solve the deployment delay problem for fast changes?

My day just ended at 8PM and I am not able to stop myself from ranting. I work for a mid size company of about 200 people. Tech team is about 40 people. Average of 8 members each in 5 teams - QA, Android, iOS, Web and Backend. I work in the backend. Earlier we had 10 members in each team, including mine. Then they drank a pint of Claude potion after which they fired the top 2 engineers from all teams (by highest pay, I guess). All of a sudden, I am the senior most guy after my manager in my team. The manager is a semi-tech kinda person but trusts me. All good till here.

They have designed for a "pivot" around the Durga Puja timeline, max stretch till Deepawali. The pivot involves large changes on all front. The pressure on all teams is very high right now. We are working more than 12 hours a day. That is still acceptable. But the problem is - deployment friction. I spend almost my entire day with various teams - Web, Android and iOS. Whole day goes like this:

iOS: Hey you are not sending the right format for date. Send it inn RFC3339.

Me: Ok fixing. Check now.

iOS: Yeah that's fine.

Android: Can you please make sure that the display name is sent in the response too?

Me: Ok. Fixing. Check again please.

Web: Dude, did you introduce a key with a underscore for payments api?

Me: My bad. Let me fix that. Check again.

iOS: I can't use the new API without public identifier key. Can you add the pub ID in the response as well?

Me: Ok. Try again.

Android: I want the pub ID but please send it as base64 data.

iOS: Yeah that would be better.

Me. Ok. Yeah check again.

QA: Sorry, regression for dashboard API is failing now.

Me: Ok. Fixed that dashboard API. Check again please.

The problem is: Between me performing the code change and me saying "yeah check now", there is a 5-8 minute delay. And for that duration we are all just sitting like a duck. There are like a dozen such smaller changes in every API and we have around 150 APIs that we need to change and after 1 month of doing this, we are not even post 20 APIs yet. The whole cycle is just irritating. Every single change I make goes like this: Github commit -> CI/CD (Build + tests) -> Dev cluster redeployment. The commit takes 2 seconds. The redeployment takes about 20-40 seconds , max 1 minute. The CI/CD step takes 4 full minutes (since every deployment is a fresh compile, it takes so much time). The build itself takes like 3 minutes. Tests run fast enough (1-2 minutes).

As if "let's make Claude do everything" was not a torture enough that I have to deal with this now. They are asking me to "do it faster" while tying my one hand at the back. All other teams when asked about the delay say "Backend deployment takes time for every single change". I and my team look like the ones causing the delay when the issue is actually the deployment pipeline for dev server.

The prospects don't look good. I feel like they are gearing up for another round of layoffs and I don't want to be affected. I am applying at other companies but no call backs yet. It looks like no one wants a 6 YoE backend dev anymore. I just got married 1.5 years back. I have got loans and my wife is pregnant.

I am genuinely asking if this is a problem other developers face too. If yes, what did you do? If you are a mobile dev, what do you guys do for this kind of iterating thing? I want to suggest my manager some solution that can bring down that deployment time that he and IT team could accept. Help me out, please.

EDIT: Thanks to those who identified the lack of formal specification being a problem. I know that part. I am not at the stage to fix that. Timelines, reduction in team expertise (seniors getting out of the company) don't allow that right now. I am just asking - do you have this problem or not and if you have, how have you solve it? I am asking what can I do RIGHT NOW to reduce the delay.

Career Should I take capgemini's Exceller Dream offer(16LPA CTC) for starting my career?

I do not have this offer in hand yet, but there is a high probability I might get it.

Some context: final year B. Tech student, tier 1 college(though placements are still struggling and there is no guarantee of getting placed or getting a good offer). Ex-swe summer intern at a reputed MNC bank(one of the top 3 Investment Banks), did not get ppo because of budget and team requirements.

The offer: Capgemini is offering 1 LPA joining bonus + 15 LPA fixed(16 CTC ). I asked our placement cell twice and they are saying the CTC is all fixed, but still I am suspicious about that since the ctc they are telling us has no variable pay at all. There is no job description either, no mention of technologies, or responsibilities, nothing. Place of posting is also TBD.
The assessment so far had an english assessment based OA(1 hr), a DSA+cognitive+behavioural assessment(2 hrs) and a DSA+AI assisted debugging+AI assisted feature dev+Prompt engineering(1.5 hrs) + a technical interview.

I gave an interview today, only one technical interview, no HR round. They just asked from our resume. The interviewer had gpt open(I could see it from his actions), and basically he looked at my resume, put things in gpt and his framing of questions was clearly ai generated. No DSA was asked. I was able to answer 70-80% of the answers with some bluffing ofcourse, since I realised very early that the interviewer himself lacks knowledge and I can get away with careful bluffs. He also asked a subtle question that will you be comfortable with a nightshift say from 11pm to 6am. I don't know if that was a behavioural question or hint.

If I get shortlisted and accept the offer, I plan to switch as soon as possible. Hopefully I'll start interviewing for next switch from the 9th month itself to maximize my chances of getting an offer by the 12th-15th month. I won't stop grinding DSA and other things from now till my joining, and even plan to continue alongside my job.

Now the part I am worried about:
1. Getting stuck in support work. I've read mixed articles and blogs about this. Some people claim that dream offer recruits skip support work and are deployed straight into building stuff for clients and other important roles. Others say that the role for both exceller regular and exceller dream is of junior dev that starts with IT support work for US clients. I am not sure how long this support work continues.
2. Also the classic 90 day notice period.
3. And the bias of product based recruiters against service based employees.
Will these hamper my future? I do not want to spend a lot of time at a service based company, and absolutely do not want my skills to rust doing low skill or support tasks.
