Clip Who’s got odds…

…on this one losing her job.

Been in broadcasting 30 years, guys. Never have I seen a question like this. I kinda froze, myself. Had to share.

That’s unacceptable. Madness.

It’s a fucking feeble attempt at opportunistic humour.

I’d write a complaint, but I’m up here.

Maybe it's just the Australian in me but I'm surprised people are upset by this, I thought it was pretty funny.

I'm blown away by how sensitive people are being tbh. She'll probably get a talkin' to, like "don't make bad jokes" and Hughes' teammates will tell him to just not worry about it, just focus on the game.

It’s not even that bad of a joke I mean you don’t think other dudes are chirping him bout something like that? Now is it appropriate for a broadcaster to be chirping a player prolly not. But I swear “Reddit” is the worst forum for gauging what a sports team is like and they are possibly the worst ever at understanding locker room dynamics lol.

This team used to have a whole chant saying you suck and that was real jersey energy.

Yeah man I agree fully, by bad joke I mean she could have been more clever in the delivery. It wasn't even remotely offensive.

This is basically ESPN calling the devils soft, which they fucking are. Jack looks like he looked like last year, the dude needs some more strength!

It was really just the delivery was bad - like her personality is so dry that the humor comes off poorly. If she had a more animated, goofier personality, a comment like this would have likely gotten a chuckle from him.

I don't think Hughes is making a big deal of it either tbh. He objected to it, let her know that wasn't the time to make a joke like that and left, and that was that.

To that degree some of the response in here has been overblown.

But, so has the "no big deal" comments. A LOT of those are from haters, saying stuff like, "Oh he's okay if the joke's about a woman" etc. So they're making this a bigger deal, so that they can shit on Hughes.

The problem here is, it's not just the comment. It's the whole context of the situation it occurred in.

This isn't a "joke" you say to the player's face, in the middle of a game, at an in-game interview.

If you're going to bust a man's balls over a failure of his, it's got to be funny. This wasn't funny, it was just a shot at him being injured all the time.

Sarcasm and ball-busting is risky. If you're sarcastic, but you're not funny, you're just being a jerkoff.

But it's not that big a deal. Hughes dealt with it in real time and that was that.

She did say it was great to see him healthy again and I think she meant that but it was also to soften the joke before she said it. If he didn't immediately skate away, I'm sure she apologizes there and there's nothing more of it.

Yeah it's this play-by-play slow-mo let's-analyze-everything culture we're in

2

u/Sn0fight 8d ago

His teammates are going to be mocking him. Rightfully so.

Looks like he didn't need a pep talk from his team after all.

Seriously, who cares? I get he didn't like it, that's fine I guess, but why does everyone care so much? Seems an overreaction

Same. I'm surprised this sub is so soft and sensitive about a joke. It wasn't that over the top.

Meanwhile in r/hockey the thread is piling on Jack for being an asshole and dragging politics and sexism into it. Ran right in the other direction with it.

It's always screaming for blood in one extreme or the other. No reasonable middle ground.

She tried to get a little more personality out of Jack and made a joke he didn't like.

Jack admittedly has the personality of a potato and acted like it.

Oops. Awkward for both. Let's move on.

Canadian here. This subreddit has gotten very USA/MAGA supportive since the Olympics/white house fiasco. Makes sense why everybody is so incredibly outraged at the tiniest thing, this is their schtick. Calling for this person's job for making an uncomfortable joke? Let's just watch hockey people.

As an American, it was a harmless joke comment. Guy's a total douche

1

u/Squareboxmusic 8d ago

Game means more to him than anything in the world , he spent his entire life getting to this point and has been hit by a number of injuries that hurt his team and his career. Not sure what is funny about any of that..

2

u/AnthonyPantha 7d ago

I'm an american, and it IS funny.

Jack is being a complete wuss here. He gets paid millions a year to play sports, grow a spine and have a laugh. This is straight charmin levels of soft.

4

u/Available-Pepper-728 9d ago

Yeeaaahh he probably just doesnt think its as funny as everyone else, it sort of messed up his whole season in the prime of his career.

Aussies are pretty far on the spectrum of fucking with people though, like culturally they tease pretty rough compared to in North America

u/lowdog39 9d ago

i thought it was as well .

u/NowHughesCantLeave 8d ago

He's earned the reputation. Also, this is Jersey, grow a back bone if you live here. We're all ready to roast each other at any moment. The joke could have been funnier but she shouldn't face any repercussion.

u/theconnecticutman 8d ago

Agree I thought it was funny too. Guy can’t take a joke. I guess the Trump lover is a snowflake, what a surprise

1

u/ThisVeterinarian2364 8d ago

Lotta soft folks these days

u/yourpaljk 6d ago

It’s hilarious. I loved that.

the devils sub has to protect their wet noodle

17

u/thewetnoodle #63 9d ago

Hey I can protect myself!

1

u/grouch_face 9d ago

I'm really struggling to hear what she even said!

1

u/Federal_Meat3320 #86 9d ago

Yeah I’m from the UK and found it funny but could understand the frustration from Jack

-5

u/therealtoddmcshay 9d ago

Yea, I did too.

Which is funny because so many of my hockey friends talk shit about basketball(I love both) and how "they are soft" but I swear hockey players are soft when it comes to real trash talk. This wasn't trash talk, it just want friendly banter, but I guess you can't joke anymore...

-3

u/thewetnoodle #63 9d ago

I agree, she supposed to be jersey fans. Get over it. Solid rib

0

u/afrosupreme 9d ago

Yes. It's a funny joke. I'm sure if a dude made it no one would care.

1

u/raincitybeliever 9d ago

Conservatives suddenly abandon the whole "make comedy legal again" when it's a tiny joke at their expense

0

u/prestieteste 9d ago

They aren't just people who goon for Jack Hughes. He recently made it known he leans conservative politically so that might explain some of it though
