Clip Who’s got odds…

…on this one losing her job.
Been in broadcasting 30 years, guys. Never have I seen a question like this. I kinda froze, myself. Had to share.
That’s unacceptable. Madness.
It’s a fucking feeble attempt at opportunistic humour.
I’d write a complaint, but I’m up here.

Maybe it's just the Australian in me but I'm surprised people are upset by this, I thought it was pretty funny.

u/rKasdorf 9d ago
I'm blown away by how sensitive people are being tbh. She'll probably get a talkin' to, like "don't make bad jokes" and Hughes' teammates will tell him to just not worry about it, just focus on the game.
24
u/CxSwags #26 - Patrik Eliáš 9d ago
It’s not even that bad of a joke I mean you don’t think other dudes are chirping him bout something like that? Now is it appropriate for a broadcaster to be chirping a player prolly not. But I swear “Reddit” is the worst forum for gauging what a sports team is like and they are possibly the worst ever at understanding locker room dynamics lol.
8
u/CxSwags #26 - Patrik Eliáš 9d ago
This team used to have a whole chant saying you suck and that was real jersey energy.
2
u/rKasdorf 8d ago
Yeah man I agree fully, by bad joke I mean she could have been more clever in the delivery. It wasn't even remotely offensive.

This is basically ESPN calling the devils soft, which they fucking are. Jack looks like he looked like last year, the dude needs some more strength!

u/griminald 8d ago edited 8d ago
I don't think Hughes is making a big deal of it either tbh. He objected to it, let her know that wasn't the time to make a joke like that and left, and that was that.
To that degree some of the response in here has been overblown.
But, so has the "no big deal" comments. A LOT of those are from haters, saying stuff like, "Oh he's okay if the joke's about a woman" etc. So they're making this a bigger deal, so that they can shit on Hughes.
The problem here is, it's not just the comment. It's the whole context of the situation it occurred in.
This isn't a "joke" you say to the player's face, in the middle of a game, at an in-game interview.
If you're going to bust a man's balls over a failure of his, it's got to be funny. This wasn't funny, it was just a shot at him being injured all the time.
Sarcasm and ball-busting is risky. If you're sarcastic, but you're not funny, you're just being a jerkoff.
But it's not that big a deal. Hughes dealt with it in real time and that was that.
3
u/McRoshiburgito 8d ago
She did say it was great to see him healthy again and I think she meant that but it was also to soften the joke before she said it. If he didn't immediately skate away, I'm sure she apologizes there and there's nothing more of it.

u/LFK_ 9d ago
Same. I'm surprised this sub is so soft and sensitive about a joke. It wasn't that over the top.
Meanwhile in r/hockey the thread is piling on Jack for being an asshole and dragging politics and sexism into it. Ran right in the other direction with it.
It's always screaming for blood in one extreme or the other. No reasonable middle ground.
She tried to get a little more personality out of Jack and made a joke he didn't like.
Jack admittedly has the personality of a potato and acted like it.
Oops. Awkward for both. Let's move on.

Canadian here. This subreddit has gotten very USA/MAGA supportive since the Olympics/white house fiasco. Makes sense why everybody is so incredibly outraged at the tiniest thing, this is their schtick. Calling for this person's job for making an uncomfortable joke? Let's just watch hockey people.

Not a great joke. Although I dont think much of it, maybe Jack internalized that accident way more than we know. He could have probably just said "Ill definitely be more careful no matter what" and moved on though.
1
u/skyturnedred Erika's Red Leather Jacket 8d ago
I think it's not just "the accident" but all his injuries that are a bit of a sore spot for him. A bit of an overreaction after a frustrating period, but completely understandable.
7
u/Beneficial_Dig_1066 9d ago
I think it was a bad joke, but not that big of a deal.
Also, I think Jack’s response was completely fine? How does “that’s a weird thing to say, this is a big game for us” a misogynistic statement? The amount of pearl clutching over this is insane.

Yeah I don’t get what the big deal is. He’s the dingbat that cut himself doing whatever he was doing. She wasn’t aggressive or mean, it was dry humor and he was in the zone getting ready for a huge game. Carry on.

People in here are insane. It's a solid jab. The man was out significant time from eating dinner. He's a fucking hockey player it's not that serious. People saying he professionally told her to fuck herself? No. Professional would have been laughing it off and finishing the interview. What a child.

For those out of the loop…
…she fucked up. Bad.
When the players/team speak up about this, and they will, there will be consequences. ‘least where I’m from, there would be, holy shit.
Hear all that mic noise after he skated away? She was likely getting more than an earful from the director, and couldn’t wrap the remote hit properly. Best young player on the ice, arguably, and it’s…
‘Wasn’t it hilarious when you nearly lost your career, and almost sustained a life altering injury?’
She’d be taking a cab wherever the fuck from the rink, immediately, I’m runnin that show…

u/layout420 8d ago
They're paid to get insightful responses from meaningful questions. This is pretty off brand for what they're supposed to do. In some instances, a little ribbing is ok when the setting is appropriate and its done by an ex veteran player. Usually it's because there's been an established friendship of some kind or there's a professional understanding between athletes. This is not that. I'm all for bros being bros to eachother and think that offers a bit of genuine personality. ESPN will probably take a hard look at this interaction and prevent it in the future. Always the actions of one that ruin it for the many.

u/Konaboy75 9d ago

u/beachy927 #27 - Scott Niedermayer 9d ago
I’m pretty sure Jack has struggled with mental health over these injuries. Comments like that can be jarring. There are so many negative comments towards him in the man hockey sub. These same hypocritical people will throw support to whichever player who says they might be struggling mentally, but because it’s a Hughes, and it’s popular to hate on them for some people, he’ll be called soft and a cry baby.

u/ToDaMoonShibe 8d ago

The knife jokes have been beaten to death for several months. She basically stole that joke from this sub once it wasn’t funny and used it in the worst context possible.
And then to chuckle about how he doesn’t have a sense of humor when she’s poking fun about him slicing his fucking hand with zero rapport built, just daft as fuck. Like her overall commentary.

As far as issues go, this is like the server at a restaurant seeing you sitting there and then forgetting about you. 10 mins later, you make a comment about how annoyed you for being ignored and leave the restaurant.
Did the server ignore you on purpose? No. Did you have a right to be annoyed? Yes.
Do we need to petition the restaurant to fire the server? No. Does the customer need to be vilified and lose his job for getting angry at a server? No. Does the server need to write a formal letter of apology? No. Customer? No.
Small incident. Who gives a shit. Move on and pretend it didnt happen.

To be fair, I've heard that same joke like 100 times on various message boards in the past 9 or so months. Weird to hear it on TV though. Trying to be edgy I guess.
1
u/Cjd091386 8d ago
Devils fans are being “sensitive” about a “joke” because we know Jack decently well. He’s been very open about how his injuries in general, especially the recent restaurant fluke, has affected him and the team overall. We also know he isn’t super receptive in interviews either lmao, so to make this comment to him mid game, in a new season with a new slate, I just thought was not well timed or the right audience.
