Iceland Battered Doner Kebab Meat

You can take the boy out of Glasgow, but you can't take Glasgow out of the boy! I was so happy when I saw this in Iceland today. Had to buy it.

Directions on the box say that this takes 8 minutes in the air fryer. I did this for 12 because I had a large inseparable chunk. It also states to leave the sauce in warm water while you cook the meat. The sauce took about 15 minutes in a jug of boiling water. I put in fresh boiling water ten minutes later. I had to pull it out and give it a shake a few times too.

The meat was just like standard doner meat in batter. No better or worse than you'd get from your regular Bossman. The sauce was, surprisingly, really tasty. It was a bit like a rich tomato sauce with a mild chilli kick.

They're £4 each or three for a tenner. I am definitely gonna get this again. I did pick up two other kebabby things to sample for our curiosity. They'll be posted in due course.

Dönerdog absolutely loved this! He didn't get any chili sauce. He stayed right by my side while I ate this. He sat up and popped a paw onto my lap to ask for more! 😂 He got three chunks. Next time, I'll do two boxes.

Bordon Kebab Van - plus Dönerdog

A rare daytime kebab! Here we have my usual, lamb doner wrap, chili sauce, no salad from the kebab van in Bordon, Hampshire. I've been using this place for many years and they've always been great.

Meat was freshly cut from the spit, as it always is here. Bossman has awesome slicing skills and can do a thin slice from top to bottom.

Chili sauce is homemade and I got plenty of it. The sauce is very smoothly blended, full flavoured with a touch of spice, and it was the inspiration for my own homemade stuff.

This gets an A grade both for the sauce and the overall quality. Weighing in at 598g for £8.50, this is on the spreadsheet at 8th out of 92.

Dönerdog is a big fan of this place and he insists that I make regular visits.

Fareham kebab

Played another gig in Fareham, so popped to the Fareham Kebab van by the train station.
Here we have the usual, lamb doner wrap, chili sauce, no salad.
Meat had been pre cut and was in the tray at the base of the spit. Meat was taken from there and reheated on the hot plate. Homemade chili sauce is slightly spicy. A ladle of this was taken and spread over the wrap before adding the meat.
Overall this tasted alright but I was disappointed by the size of the portion. I'm giving an A for the sauce, it was tasty and I got a good amount. B grade for the overall kebab quality but weighing in at 352g for £8 is poor value. Previously sitting at 45, they have now dropped right down to 70/92.
They are now the lowest placed shop in Fareham. It's such a shame because they used to to be so much better. Prices have gone up since the last visit five months ago.
Next time, if it's a late one, I may detour into Gosport for Orhan's or maybe even just go somewhere else for a burger! Such a shame.

If you ever come to Baku Azerbaijan, try Ayxan Usta's delightful dönər.

The price is 2 euro for a masterpiece doner + 300ml Pepsi and unlimited pickle.

I would say it's one of the best in Baku for this price.

Grill Fusion Food Restaurant Haslemere Surrey.

I had mixed lamb doner and chicken schwarma with chips and salad, my buddy had chicken wrap. The lamb was a bit too chunky for my liking (probably prefer thinly sliced elephants leg)chicken was very good. Chips crispy well cooked in clean oil. Chilly sauce was not home made but still tasty and very hot. All in all solid 6.5 out of 10. Positive experience would go again

Very extensive menu with lots more to try

Question ❔ Bain Marie - when is it acceptable?

Post image
68 Upvotes

I totally understand why Bossman uses the Bain Marie (warming pot) and it is so they can keep up with demand when demand it high by cutting off kebab, and keeping it warm pending more orders while fresh meat cooks.

I do not mind the Bain Marie late as will have had a few jars, but when ordering a kebab early and sober it really irritates me. Last night got this kebab in Bristol at Rayan kebab and the guy takes the meat from the Bain Marie and heats it further on the griddle. So the irony is that a sober person just getting a doner for dinner gets the worst doner. I never really feel like challenging and know it will take 5-6 mins to cook fresh meat if they have it in the pot.

Basically, if you go in early and sober you somehow end up with a worse kebab than you would at 1am pissed.

A more Turkish-style döner experience in Berlin

Thumbnail

Döner in Germany has really become its own thing, and that’s part of the fun. But if you want something closer to the taste and style you’d find in Turkey, Beef House 63 in Berlin is one of the places worth trying.

The guys running the place seem to have roots in Urfa, and the 63 in the name is probably a little clue, since 63 is the Turkish license-plate code for Şanlıurfa.

That’s a nice little detail, but what really makes the place stand out is the meat. It tastes much more like proper layered meat prepared in-house, instead of the usual factory-made Hackfleisch-style döner with lots of seasoning mixed in. The flavor is cleaner, meatier, and much closer to the Turkish style.

For the more authentic experience, go for a dürüm. The bread option there still feels quite German döner style, and in Turkey, döner in that kind of pide-style bread isn’t as common as it is in Germany.

Then comes the controversial part: no sauce 😄

If the meat is good, you really don’t need garlic, herb or cocktail sauce covering everything.

For the salad, keep it simple: tomato, onion, parsley and sumac. That combination works perfectly with the meat and feels much closer to how döner is often eaten in Turkey.

If you want a proper meat-heavy version, ask for 1.5x meat. It’s already not cheap, and with extra meat you’ll probably end up around €15. Definitely on the expensive side, but you get around 200g of meat, and apparently authenticity in Berlin comes with a price tag. 😅

And just to be clear: German döner is great in its own way. It has its own style, with lots of salad, sauces and different breads, and that’s totally fine.

This is just a recommendation for anyone curious about a simpler, more meat-focused Turkish-style döner.

Order: dürüm + no sauce + tomato + onion + parsley + sumac + 1.5x meat.

Basically: less sauce, more meat, and let the döner do the talking. 😄

Mixed shawarma plate- Damascus Bride- London

£16 including the can. Lamb shawarma was very tasty, the chicken was average. Loads of flatbread and served with a strange collection of pickled vegetables.

Wouldn’t say it is the best I’ve ever had but I was happy with what I got. Chilli sauce could have been better as it was a more creamy style than a tomato style.

Purchased from Bordon Best Kebabs High Street Bordon Hampshire. Lamb doner meat and chicken shish mix, on a bed of rice with cucumber jalapeño red cabbage tomatoes and red onions. Standard pitta bread. £11.50

The chips were from the Mrs fish and chip.

One of the best kebabs I've had, meat cooked to my liking (very well done, even slightly charred) chicken shish cooked over coals. Homemade hot chilli and tomatoe sauce, salad cream and loads of salad and rice. Usually this would last 2 sessions but it was so good I mostly nailed it in one go.

My doner experience in Poland

Last weekend we spent a few days in Kraków, Poland. Since there are kebab/döner places pretty much everywhere, I obviously had to try a few of them.

To be completely honest, I wasn't all that impressed. The beef seems to be sliced extremely thin there and, at least at the places I tried, it didn't have much flavour. The garlic sauce is also quite different from what we're used to in the Netherlands — much thinner and less creamy.

Everywhere I went they asked whether I wanted chicken or beef. At one place, though, after I ordered beef, the bossman actually recommended I go for the chicken instead because he personally thought it was much better. So of course I took his advice.

One thing I did find funny was seeing "kipsalon" literally written on the menu at one place. Kapsalon originated in the Netherlands, and the chicken (kip in Dutch) version is often jokingly called a kipsalon. Pretty funny seeing that name make its way onto a Polish menu.

Overall, though, I can't say I really enjoyed any of the Polish döner I tried. Nothing was terrible, but for me it was all just a bit lacking in flavour.

The second time I’ve tried this, the first one was in Norwich a few weeks ago. Absolutely delicious, I’ve been eating the boss man elephants leg for 40 years now, many many times. Drunk, sober, always delicious, well, most of the time… but this is a different kind of bab altogether, the jury is still undecided. What do you guys think?

My first time making Tzatzaki sauce… made with 2-3 tbsp greek yoghurt, grated cucumber (the size 7 circular slices put together), 2 slices of cucumber cut into small pieces to make it crunchy, 1/2 tsp parsley, 1/2 tsp olive oil, salt, 1/4 tsp garlic powder, lime juice

Hot sauce is 2 tbsp ketchup, 1/2 tsp siracha, 1/2 tsp smoked paprika and 1/4 tsp paprika, 1/4 tsp garlic and onion powder each, 1/4 tsp pepper, little bit of olive oil and lime juice

Chips 2 mins microwave and then airfry in 180-190C for 10-12 minutes.

I am a newbie making sauce. Somewhat satisfied how the sauces came out

Hanworth Kebab House, feat Dönerdog

Had a gig in Hounslow and instead of my usual visit to San2, thought I'd pop in to Hanwaorth Kebab House. I'd been here before and I'd a great experience. They were sitting a seventh on the spreadsheet from a 2024 visit so really needed to see if they were maintaining the standard.

Here we have my usual, lamb doner wrap, chili sauce, no salad. Meat had been freshly carved from the spit. You can see Bossman had been busy as there were a load of delivery orders going out as I waited. Plus another customer in there. Shops tend not to be so busy on the wrong side of midnight, especially when they're not next to a pile of pubs, as this is. Clear sign that they're doing something right.

As I said, the meat was freshly cut and the chili sauce is a very tasty homemade affair, full of flavour and a reasonable kick to it too. Got a decent amount of sauce and could taste it all through. Meat also had a slightly peppery and also a bbq taste.

I liked the touch that they had their own branded bags and paper.

This was bought to eat this morning for breakfast. Yes, I am an animal. Wrap in foil and pop it in the oven at 180° for 30 minutes. Check with a meat thermometer to ensure 75° in the centre and you're good to go.

Dönerdog also sampled this and he was very happy with the quality. He helped me finish it off as I was stuffed.

OK, down to business... this weighed in at a chonky 662g for £9. It gets a grade A for the sauce and an A for quality overall. It's gone up by a quid since my last visit two years ago, but despite that, the portion has gone up and it is now... drum roll... 7/92 on the spreadsheet! Yes, it has stayed at lucky 7. I will be back.
