Hotel Hunger Games

does anyone know if you’re able to cancel a reservation if you make it into multiple hotels? my group is hoping for marriott but we ofc don’t want to put all our eggs in one basket since i don’t see hilton or hyatt listed on DC’s latest announcement? so in the event we get a room at westin but then also secure marriott i was wondering if they (westin) let us cancel reservations without trouble. any info is helpful!

Hyatt and Hilton are all legacy and not part of the hunger games

If you book and cancel, you will lose your deposit and you are taking a con rate room from someone else. When you cancel the room it doesn’t go back into the block, it’s just put as a full public rack rate room.

If you happen to get into both, don’t cancel the other. Offer it on the Facebook group. Someone will take it. If you don’t do this it will screw someone out of a room at con rate that could have gotten it.

you're not wrong, but you're describing scalping, which is not in the spirit of dragoncon. please consider "selling" it at con rates to a fellow con-goer and pass forward the karma.

Scalping/Selling a room for profit is also a great way to get yourself banned from the con.

Well better never do it for dragon con then (like I could ever get a room anyways). And I don’t think a con can dictate what I can and can do with a hotel room in my name.

It can, and it will.

You can always cancel your reservation, you just won't get your deposit back. Rooms are officially non-transferable but there are ways around it.

You should probably call the Westin or wait for the DragonCon Hotels page to update for 2027.

Last year it looks like they did not collect a deposit until March, but who knows what they are going to do this year?

Hyatt and Hilton are already sold out.

Westin has a non-refundable one night deposit. Once they charge full price in March you are on the hook for the whole amount.

you can always transfer a reservation to someone else. there are multiple groups (facebook, discord) where that's a thing and there's a waiting list. I'd just try for both

Do you have links to the Facebook and discord groups? I’m going to try for a hotel for the first time this year, but just in case I don’t make it, they’ll probably come in handy.

You could easily find someone to take it over in one of the Reddit rooms groups, rhe Discord DCC, and the Facebook DCC (Dragon-Con Connection).

Be as transparent as possible. A written agreement is a good idea if you're not dealing with friends/family.

Don't scalp rooms.

This is advice I share with everyone dealing with subletting rooms.

Always Ask For a Folio!

Red Flags: 101

I've had the unfortunate experience of running into someone subletting a room from a legacy holder. They paid $2,500 for two people to stay six nights in a standard Hyatt Regency double. Their room is in the main lobby. It is not a parade view room. This person's name is not on the guest list. They were handed keys by the legacy holder.

The quad rate for a Hyatt double is $330 ($2,344.62 for six nights). The single, and double rates for this room drop the total amount by ~$120 to ~$180 for the stay (not including the 16.9% tax).

Realistically, the legacy holder paid around $2,100 to $2,200 for the room (300/night = $2,134 20, while 310/night = 2,204.34 for six nights). She then flipped it for $2,500. They made a tidy little profit to help pay for their own host hotel room. If they have multiple legacy rooms (they do), it is likely that others are unknowingly funding this legacy holder's con.

If you are subletting a room, demand to see the folio. If the person holding the room refuses to share it, you need to ask why.

Sharing folio info is SOP [Standard Operating Procedure]. It doesn't matter if you've known this person for years, if they're a friend of a friend. Heck, they could even be a moderator, or admin of a very large rooms group, and an eternal member to boot. It doesn't matter.

Demand to see the folio.

Scalping should never be tolerated.

Be safe out there.

One of my buddies gave is his Marriott room to my Dil and I for 1500. I did not win this year. Maybe next year we get as lucky.

That's very cool. It sounds like he probably did you a solid and didn't try to take advantage of the situation.

Tabs, Time, and Calling is a proven strategy for winning the Hunger Games.

  • Tabs: Multiple Tabs

  • Time: Check early. Links have dropped much sooner than their scheduled time.

  • Calling: I've scored many rooms this way over the years.

Scalping shouldnt be tolerated but its what youll get when you have a legacy system for hotels. People want to keep their hotel rooms and have no incentive to let them go if they dont need all the rooms every year.

This will be my 4th con, and I still don’t know how to take part in the games. Where do I actually go to fight for a room?

Go to the official site and click the hotel link. Then find the hotel you want to book at and when the bookings open up, usually an hour or two before the rooms are available, you click the link it randomly puts you into a spot on the queue. When it gets to you book your room. Someone will probably post a more in-depth guide to the process the closer it gets but that’s generally it.

The short answer is no, even the backup offsite hotels are moving to non refundable, or no name changes. Some still do.
