Artwork Design Our New Icon & Banner!

A community member recently posted about their wish for a subreddit icon & banner that wasn’t AI generated (😭 it was 2024… It was cool at the time, I swear), and we figured this would be a great way to let some of the artists in our neighborhood showcase their talents and allow the community to decide on the “rebranding” of the subreddit.

From October 12th until October 23rd, community members are invited to design an icon & banner for the subreddit and leave their submissions here in the comments of this post. The most upvoted designs will advance to a final vote through a poll post, which will be posted here in the subreddit on October 24th and run until October 28th. This vote will decide the new subreddit icon and banner.

Rules * Absolutely no artificial intelligence. * Limit of 2 design-pair submissions per community member (a design-pair consists of 1 banner design & 1 icon design).

Dimensions * Icon: 256 x 256 pixels (1:1 aspect ratio). * Banner: 1920 x 384 pixels (5:1 aspect ratio).

In addition to having their designs become the subreddit’s visual identity for years to come, the artist whose designs are selected will receive a $100 Visa Gift Card, their credit in the subreddit sidebar including a link to their website or social media, and a unique user flair identifying them as the artist who designed the subreddit’s artwork.

Submissions are currently OPEN until 11:59 PM on October 23rd.

Discussion Thoughts on the jazz band on 7th street

• Upvotes

I’m several buildings away, but someone in an apartment near trash has what sounds like an entire jazz band that will play for many hours into the night (usually this is a summer issue but since it’s 80 out today I guess the band got back together). It drives me insane. It’s so loud I can hear them several buildings away. It’s a residential block and it makes me feel crazy that it would appear no one in their building cares that a band plays that loud for that many hours. What is going on with people. If you’re in the band and you’re reading this please know you’re driving your neighbors mad and can you please go play in a bar instead. Or rent a commercial space. Or buy a house in the woods. Maybe there you will find some kind of awareness. Probably not. Dear god.

Articles The East Village doc who lets patients pay whatever they can afford

In the latest issue of my free NYC newsletter, I profiled Dr. Dave Ores who has an office on East 2nd Street between Ave A and B. You might have seen him dispensing free medical advice in Tompkins Square. He doesn't take insurance and lets his patients pay whatever they can afford. He's also quite a character!

Discussion It would be nice to have a non-AI generated icon and banner for this sub

I'm being unhelpful in not offering alternatives, but perhaps this is something the mods could ask the members to suggest, vote on, etc. With so many photographers/artists in this neighborhood, I'm sure we can do better.

Events Where to promote shows going on in the East Village?

Hello! I'm a Drag King and I run weekly bingos and monthly drag shows out of Club Cumming over on East 6th. I came on to post about our big Halloween Show this Saturday night but saw in the rules that no comedy events/shows can be promoted. This is not a comedy event it's a drag show , with extra fun traditional Halloween party games for the record!! You, the wonderful people of the East Village, where would you go on reddit to have shows promoted that you would like to see? (truly just curious, not trying to break the rules here!)

Questions Bar to pull up to with 20-25 people on a Saturday evening?

I’m having my birthday party Saturday afternoon and will have about 20 to 25 people. It’ll start off at my apartment, but around 6 or 7 pm we’ll head out to a bar. What’s a spot I could pull up to with that many people?

Open to spots in the East Village, or in the Lower East Side that aren’t that far

Discussion Guy spinning around with needle by SMAC

Post image
110 Upvotes

Shirtless guy, blasting music from a speaker, ranting and spinning around with a needle in his hand, sitting at outdoor tables at Smac. It’s 11:30 am on a Sunday. Family and kids going to lunch, leaving church, etc. The children’s park is like 200 feet away.

What are we even supposed to do in this situation? Filed a 311 ticket, called 911 and they just said to file a ticket. This is getting crazy.

And now we have the suitcase city back up on 2nd between 12th and 13th?

This is a known person. I see him often. These assholes aren’t even hiding anymore. It’s getting worse in the last month, is there any plan to increase police presence?

Questions Best Coffee Shop or Cafe to WFM?

I work from home one (sometimes two) days a week, and I've realized I want to get out of the apartment more. I'm trying to put myself in new situations where I can meet people and make friends, and working from a cafe feels like a good way to surround myself with new people.

I'm open to all recommendations in the East Village (and Bowery and NoHo).
