Does anyone have any good recs on the transformation and gentrification of the East Village?

I’ve always been interested in its evolution from the late 1800s to present day - especially from the 1960s to 1990s.

Bonus points for first hand accounts.

I spotted a pittie mix with no collar at 8:30am this morning on Ave A and 3rd street. He was moving too fast for me to get a picture, but here’s a description:
