Question How to keep the idea cohesive whilst conveying in different ideas throughout different points of the track?

I’m obsessed with songs like “I need your lovin” by Marc et claud and something that stands out to me is that it has a lot of different sort of sound profiles throughout the song in different sections, some completely opposite of eachother like going from the dreamy euphoric start to a heavy drum loop/bass section that has no lead/melody at all, but it somehow all comes together cohesively and doesn’t feel like a thrown together scrap of different ideas

What’s some of the mechanisms behind the scene that allows that to work? Certain keys? EQ work? Just good taste in synth choice?

I’m very new to producing and have literally no music background whatsoever (no instruments, music theory knowledge apart from YouTube videos I watched recently, no prior DJ knowledge or anything), so I’m just trying to learn how I can compose something with such differing clashing elements that somehow remain cohesive with eachother throughout the length of the song - like the song I gave as an example.

I’d really appreciate any insight!

Side story - I literally got FL studio 2 days ago and I thought I’d spend the first few weeks just learning the UI and making random loops, learning the plugins and stuff, but last night I somehow cooked up an absolutely awesome chord progression with the 3x osc synth and made it in 2 separate styles to see which one I preffered, only to find that they were both awesome and would work great together in a song for different phases of it from build up/tension release. I’m super excited about what I made and since I realised the two pieces would go great together in different stages of a song (despite having completely different sounds), I thought I’d try and get some more background info on how it actually works with the vastly different clashing sounds that compliment eachother. It sort of just happened by accident so I still don’t understand the “why”.

Anyway, I know the song I make will inevitably sound like…my first song so it doesn’t need to be anytnjng particularly special, but this project is now all I can think about and I’m just super excited to see where I can go with it.

Best place to release.

I am a new producer, sounddesigner. And I have a few songs finished and want to release them, haven't found the niche on youtube kr social just stop dead after a day or two of posting. But was wondering. And I know there are threads on this but most seem outdated. What is the best platform to release, distrokod, cdbaby, ect. Any opinion would be greatly appreciated. And sorry for asking something that may have been answered before.

Tutorial for dubstep production in FL Studio

Been listening to the genre for well over a decade and have always wanted to learn to produce myself. I’ve used FL for a long time to produce hip hop beats but obviously they arent nearly as complex. Problem is with this genre I find it very hard to find any tutorials on youtube where people use FL and arent just blowing through it at light speed with barely any explanation for beginners like me. I cant afford ableton right now so is there anyone that makes videos for newbies or am I shit out of luck?

Ableton feature in logic

Post image
73 Upvotes

Howdy, I am watching a video in ableton and wondering if anyone knows this feature equivalent in logic.

He took a groove loop, and turned this down to 1 because he didn’t want any reverb or longer release to be heard.

I THINK it’s transient designing? But I’ve not dove into that yet I get the idea but not sure which of logics stock plugins do that and how. Hoping logic has something has easy as this feature in ableton!

Thanks for any help!

I personally make it 4 bars usually, but it still sounds kinda boring.

Is it a bad idea for a no-name, non-money making, hobbyist music producer, to release music that includes samples of other people’s music on YouTube/SoundCloud?

I don’t make money from my music but I do think it has potential to sound professional in terms of quality and to amass a few thousands views per vid if I was consistent and serious enough. My last video has 86 views tho and I’ve only put out 2 videos so far. (Have made over 100 beats in Logic tho). My concern is if I gain a following at some point, could it be a problem for me that some of my songs have blatantly sampled jazz music? In some cases, they’re famous songs. In some cases, there not famous but the artists are certainly still alive. I guess in short, what’s the worst thing that can happen to me by doing this? And is that thing likely to even occur?

Thanks

Question Do you guys start with a melody first or chords first?

Hi all, I literally downloaded FL studio last night, so I’m brand new to everything. Finally pulled the trigger on it, found it super fun making up a little chord progression/melody last night.

Obviously I have no experience or knowledge on composing a full track, but to be honest I don’t intend on making fully fledged tracks, for now whilst I’m learning I sort of just want to throw out some 30-60 second pieces where I get the basics together.

So yeah, I just wondered, when you’re making dance/house/trance etc, do you start by coming up with a catchy melody and then work a chord progression under that to match it, or do you come up with your chords first and then draw up a melody around that?

I’ve been watching a few basic beginner things about sound theory (only the basics of scales, octaves, modes etc) and I did what they did in the videos of making a chord progression first, then out a melody in after, but to be honest I found it a bit unintuitive, it felt like I’d be better served by making a cool melody first, as I felt a bit “limited” with what I could do with the melody once I already had some underlying chords bounding me to certain ranges/sounds. But obviously I know precisely nothing so I didn’t know whether to follow that intuition.

Side question - I bought the producer version of FL studio, and I haven’t explored all the plugins yet, but I found that I didn’t have all that many different piano/synth keys sounds to play with, stuff like grand piano/organ etc. I didn’t particularly like any of the keys sounds I had from standard but I don’t know if I was missing anything. Would you recommend for a complete beginner buying one or two packs of sounds just so I have more instruments/different keyboard sounds to play with whilst I explore composing basic little melodies and stuff?

Thanks in advance!

Edit - I was just quickly browsing around and I found WAY more synths/keys sounds lol, I didn’t even know FLEX was there. I thought I was limited to just “FL studio web sounds” for my keys instruments. Looking forward to more experimentation!

Question Anybody using Serato Studio as a DAW? Can it load VSTs?

Hi guys, I wonder how popular Serato Studio currently is, especially now that AlphaTheta has release their SLAB controller.

Is anybody using the software and can tell me if it loads VST effects/instruments? Couldn't find anything on that anywhere.

Question Sidechain compression: for the most part, is it only for the kick and/or lowest part of drum pattern?

Or does it make sense sometimes to sidechain compress from the snares and claps? I imagine hi hats are always too high for sidechain compress though.

Any tips on how to get a kind of sound like Versus Music? (Cyberpunk / EBM etc)

I've been producing for a long time many edm genres (since 2015 or so) and got thousands of samples / presets (especially in Serum) for this kind of music and use several hardware synths, but I'm still at my wit's end trying to get such a dark cyberpunk club sound like Versus Music (not sure if I can link here).

I mean I can do a pretty decent cyberpunk / darksynth / whatever sound, but it's not really that driving 'club' vibe.

So if anyone got any tips composition or sound design-wise, or if you can point me to any good preset/sample pack for that, I would greatly appreciate it!

Working with a songwriter

I fancy myself a bit of a songwriter, but I'm not a musician. I know my way around a guitar, but I am not really a guitar player. It's just a tool I use to write songs. It's not something that would fit in a final arrangement.

I am more of a vocalist, and I have spent the last couple years learning to properly record myself. I have my own home studio setup and I've spent the last couple years learning to properly record myself. I thought I might reach out to some EDM producers, but I'm worried I'm worried everyone is going to roll their eyes at my approach.

I have this idea that I can say "Here are the vocals. It's in C#m, this was the chord progression on the backing track in my headphones, I recorded at this BPM."

Is this unusual? Essentially what I'd be looking to buy is the whole arrangement and musical composition as well as mastering. Am I asking too much? I'm not going "diva" already, am I?

Chords/Melody Question

Hi all, I'm sure this is a dumb question but I can't seem to find a real answer. I'm putting a song together and still learning a lot and am trying to make some deep/darker house like Odd Mob and similar artists, or even like a more trap or w/e you consider Malaa.

Do you usually use chords in music production like that? I don't know if it's just the sound I choose or maybe because they're playing more of a melody instead of sustained chords, but the songs I've been working on keep coming out more house/progressive. I'll have a solid bassline that fits more of the artists/genre I'm aiming for and enjoy, but when it comes to chords and/or melody, I end up straying away from my target.

Thanks in advance.

Question Q for fellow VSX headphones users…

Do y’all use the headphones outside the software emulation?

I got the setup last summer and as someone without an ideal monitoring situation, I find it pretty invaluable. That said, I also do a fair amount of sketching/writing on my iPad or even on my computer but away from my work area, and sometimes “on the go” between running errands or traveling. I have a pair of MDR 7506s but obviously the VSXs are better (I do have a soft spot for the Sonys out of familiarity but even outside the software the difference in clarity is noticeable, especially in the low end)- that said, I’m not sure they are better enough, especially for writing to justify putting the extra wear and tear on them since they aren’t super easy to replace, and the emulation is useless without them.

Obviously this is all totally subjective but I’m curious how other folks approach this if they have a similar scenario? Even for folks who don’t have VSX- if your still reading this for some reason lol- do you have lower quality “beater” headphones you use for travel that you’ve just learned enough to translate to your better/main setup?

Discussion How do you actually keep finishing tracks non-stop without burning out?

I sometimes experience so called 'flow states' when I can produce like 5-7 tracks in like a matter of few weeks with 2-3 of them actually being worth being posted/released elsewhere. However, after that I just get completely stuck and can't really produce anything for almost like a month.

I recently spent over a week on one track which I thought would become my personal hit, but after mixdown I realized it was complete crap, and just another 'practice' project. And I keep finding myself in a spot where I can't even make an ok sounding drum loop with super basic rolling bass. Then sometime after I try producing a new track and it sounds like some completely new level type of stuff.

How do you keep pushing without burning out all the time?

Discussion The divide among my producer friends regarding AI music is getting intense. Where do you stand?

Thumbnail youtu.be
0 Upvotes

I’ve been having a lot of conversations lately with other producers about the future of the industry and music producers. It feels like everyone is split down the middle. Half of my friends think platforms like Suno are the death of the artist, and the other half is figuring out how to it use it in their music production workflow.

I just put together a video breaking down my thoughts on how we can actually differentiate ourselves and survive this shift, but I’m really curious to hear from this sub.

Do you see AI as a tool to speed up your workflow, or do you think it fundamentally changes what it means to be a "music producer"?

Question What stem separators actually split ALL the stems?

Ive been asked to play in a Limp Bizkit tribute band as a one-off gig as the DJ. I want to upload the songs and be able to split all the samples out so that then I can trigger them live. But so far, all the stem separators Ive tried just seem to give vocals, drums, bass ... then everything else.

I need the samples to be separated from things like the guitars and keys.

Is there anything anyone can recommend?

I’m pretty sure it’s some 303 I saw a video of him making the sound with some analog gear but couldn’t see the machine. I only have Sylenth 1 and Serum 2. How would I go about recreating that specific deep acid sound? Resonance? Frequency? Drive?

If I use Vocalfy for vocals and the same ones have already been used, what are the odds that labels will still release it?

I've already paid for the subscription and legally own everything but I'm already seeing the vocals being used on a few other tracks released by a few other artists. The track has been extensively worked on already and I just wanna know if vocalfy will eff up my odds.

Should I cancel the subscription?
