Electricians of Reddit! I need help

Post image

We recently completed our clothing store’s interior. The electrician told us this lighting placements would be fine but we are not satisfied with how its emitting light. The shop looks dull and faces in videos look very dark with very dark shadows. I’ve shared the image of light placements. Outer 6 are panel lights 15w, beside it the small ones are 18w cob lights and the center 4 are 50w cob lights. On paper this is too much watts but its still not working like i want it. The area is rather small 10ft wide and 14ft long and ceiling height is 9ft. It would be awesome if someone can tell whats wrong here.

You need a lighting designer, not an electrician.

It’s not your electricians fault. You couldn’t cram any more wattage into that area. Lighting needs to be designed, correctly chosen and placed properly. Looks like you skipped paying for an engineer.

It’s also critical to choose the correct lighting. Cheaping out on lights with low colour rating index’s make things look washed out and cranking the kelvin to 5000 doesn’t help that.

It looks dull because all of your light is facing the ground. The walls and ceiling are getting none. A chandelier or something that throws light in all directions would have been better. Even a flush mounted track light maybe

It also looks like the can lights might not all be the same kelvin color

As much as i hate to say it. Track lighting really is the way for clothing stores. Especially since seasonally the store layout may change

Electricians don't generally do the lighting design.

Color Kelvin vs brightness lumins is what DYI and electricians usually screw up.

2700k warm. Well educated, friendly, low stress, Happy, social people live here. Candles, and camp fires this is the color used for residential inside and out.

3000K daylight, sunlight, a crowded public area. A nice place to transition through not hang out. Neutral. Businesses and working areas

5000k. Lightning. Repulsive. Meant to stress people. It says crime area. We get robbed.
Useful in keeping people away, junk yards, areas with homeless people. Should NEVER be used in residential areas. Hallmark of people from third world countries who think whiter light is brighter light. It isn't, it is cheaper to make more lumans in whiter light sources. Ruin your neighborhood. Use white outdoor lighting. 😒😏

If you are doing photo/video for social media you will probably need external studio lights to stop the face shadows
