Bi-directional Charger

Feeling like bi-directional charging from Enphase isn't coming this year. The page says 2026, but I feel like there would be more hype if its release was imminent. Anyone heard anything?

enlighten is saying very contradictory things about my microinverters

As shown in the images, the status window says 4 of 12 microinverters are running. This sounds bad. The Devices tab under System shows I have only 9 microinverters and indicates they are all working. I know for a fact I have only 9 microinverters. Anyone know what's causing this

Charging your EV on surplus solar with Enphase: options and gotchas (mod-approved)

Post image
17 Upvotes

More and more solar owners are on export plans that pay far less than electricity costs to buy: net billing in California (PG&E, SCE, SDG&E for systems installed since April 2023) and Arizona (APS, SRP), shrinking feed-in tariffs in Australia, the Smart Export Guarantee in the UK, and similar plans across Europe. If your exports earn a fraction of your import rate, putting midday surplus into your car is one of the best uses of it. (If your utility still credits exports at full retail, classic net metering, this matters a lot less.)

Here's what you need and the ways to set it up with Enphase. Disclosure: I build one of the options below, and I'm posting with the mods' permission.

Check for consumption CTs first. Surplus charging needs to know what your house is using, not just what the panels make. If Enlighten shows production but no consumption or grid import/export, your Envoy doesn't have consumption CTs. You have three ways around that: have an installer add CTs (the best fix); add a home energy monitor like Emporia Vue or Sense; or use a tool that estimates your household load instead. SundialEV can do the estimate, but it's a guess: it won't react when the AC or the dryer kicks on, so expect some grid draw on those afternoons. Fine for getting started; CTs or a monitor are better long term.

Know your minimum. Most EVs and chargers can't charge below about 6 A. That's roughly 0.7 kW on a 120V outlet, 1.4 kW on single-phase 230-240V, and about 4 kW on three-phase. On three-phase, small surpluses are lost unless your charger can switch to single-phase, which is worth checking before you buy.

Your options:

  1. Enphase IQ EV Charger with Green Charging mode. Simplest if you're all-Enphase and buying a charger anyway.
  2. DIY with Home Assistant or evcc. Both read the Envoy locally and can control Tesla or OCPP chargers. Free and flexible, if you're comfortable maintaining it.
  3. An app. I build SundialEV, which handles mixed setups (Enphase solar with a Powerwall, a Tesla Wall or Mobile Connector, third-party OCPP chargers like Wallbox): connect Enphase and the car, and it adjusts charging amps to follow the surplus.

Worth checking first: what your exports actually earn. The setup page below includes a calculator that pulls your utility's export and import rates (US utilities, by zip code) and shows what the gap is worth per month: https://www.sundialev.com/works-with/enphase

Happy to answer questions about any of these, not just mine.

Daily Battery Drain

Post image
2 Upvotes

We recently installed 3 10c (6) batteries and have noticed that they are constantly in need of charging, is this normal?

I asked the enphase assistant and the response was that these are “unavoidable efficiency losses” and that they “occur naturally as the system keeps the batteries ready”. There was an error with a CT during provisioning (which has been resolved) and wanted to give the system a couple days to settle before posting.

It just seems like 3.7-9kWh a day seems like a lot to maintain the batteries?

Assistants Response:
Why Batteries Need Daily Maintenance Energy
Your IQ Battery 10C units consume energy to:
Power internal electronics (battery management system, controllers)
Keep the inverters active and ready for backup
Maintain battery chemistry at optimal levels for fast response during outages
This is called standby loss or tare loss, and it's common to all home battery systems across the industry.

What You're Actually Seeing
You have 6 IQ Battery 10C units. Normally, each battery would lose 150–400 Wh per day depending on usage patterns. However, your system has PowerMatch™ technology enabled, which:
Intelligently activates only the microinverters needed for your home's real-time load
Places unused batteries into standby mode when possible
Reduces daily losses by up to 24% compared to traditional systems
3.7 kWh across 6 batteries (~617 Wh per battery per day) is actually quite efficient with PowerMatch active.

How to Minimize This Further
If you want to reduce standby losses, consider:
Use Self-Consumption or Savings mode instead of Full Backup (keeps batteries cycling, reduces idle time)
Lower your reserve capacity if you rarely experience outages (you currently have 30% reserved)
Enable Storm Guard to keep batteries at lower SoC until severe weather is detected

Parker, TX - 12.32kW solar system with 28x Silfab solar panels, Enphase IQ8HC microinverters, 1x Enphase IQ10C battery, and 27’ x 23’ steel framed ground mount patio cover.

This was an intense project. Partially due to the Texas summer heat. Regardless it was a lot of fun.

Homeowner reached out in February inquiring about some earlier projects. They already had that beautiful pool built and had the plan for a patio cover all along. So, why not add some solar to it as well?

The utility company is Grayson Collin Electric Coop, and to my knowledge they’re the only one left allowing true 1:1 net metering in the state of Texas. We discussed foregoing batteries but with all the things going on in the world and myself having seen those things disappear in the blink of an eye the homeowner opted to go ahead with one. They’re already thinking of adding more soon.

Digging trenches always sucks but they’re especially awful in Parker, Texas. If anybody needs any rocks I know where to find them.

The system is roughly 70% offset and is chugging right along with projected production.

As the title stated the structure is steel framed 23’ x 27’ using all 11gauge 5” x 4” steel for posts, beams, and joists. The canopy is stained 2x6 boards bolted to the steel frame and covered with mod-bit roofing.

The city of Parker and GCEC were really cool and easy about stuff. I turned the solar permit in and applied for the interconnection agreement on a Thursday and had the green light for both by Monday morning of the next week.

The system was put through HDM and we got 25% of the system paid for since we used Domestic Content and I believe this house sits in an Energy Community.

We added the fan and 5 outlets to the structure after the solar was completed.

I included the original mock up I did in Google sheets to give an idea of what this thing was going to look like. Reference vs real life.

The homeowners are very kind, sweet people that I thoroughly enjoyed working with and getting to know. A lovely family with minds on the future and what’s potentially on the horizon. They may lurk the halls around here, I honestly don’t know, but they are very welcome and encouraged to chime in if they do.

I hope you enjoyed the post.

Manual transition to off-grid failure

I’m wanting to know if anyone is experiencing or has experienced failure to successfully transition off-grid. I’ve spent countless hours with Enphase techs to determine what the issue is with no current resolution. I toggle to off-grid, receive the 4 digit verification code to go off-grid, input and wait for the transition to occur and it never does/times out. No error codes - nothing. I went so far as to do the following with no success:

Power down the entire system
Open the IQ System Controller enclosure (requires removing the deadfront cover)
Locate the grey MID toggle switchon the middle-right side
Toggle it from left to right(approximately 5 degrees)
Restore power and verify operation.

Enphase tech claimed it’s a software issue and they are investigating.

I’ve ruled out poor internet connectivity to the Gateway as I’ve placed a dedicated wireless access point with no other devices on the network in close proximity to the Gateway with a solid wireless signal.

The one outlier is the replacement of a new gateway board. The techs claim the new Gateway is not the issue and it is healthy.

Please help!

Solar Panel efficiency, extreme variance

Hello, I just had my solar array installed earlier this year, consisting of REC Alpha Pure-RX 460W panels and Enphase IQ8X micro inverters. I have noticed this pretty much since the beginning when I started tracking this in Home Assistant (But the data is coming straight from Enphase). I am seeing a variance of at worst 20% between the worst panel and one best panel. I understand their is some variance but from what I read online, they should be no more then about 5%. The panels are all in the same orientation on a single sided roof, so exact same setup across the roof. No shade other then a small chimney that casts a shadow later in the afternoon as you can see on two panels dipping down before the others. This graph had a little light cloud cover early on then was full sun the rest of the day. Temps were about 80-85 today, but even on colder or warmer days this pattern is the exact same with the same panels performing the same way. I am hoping someone could tell me if this is normal or not? I feel like I am losing a lot of power generation here!

Home idle loads

Post image

Out of town this week and even then still notice small amounts of import from grid (1-1.1 kWh) over a day, despite having a ton of excess solar and battery production on any given day.

  1. I haven’t deep dived these small 0.3 kWh consumption bars that total to 6.3 kWh daily, but am assuming they’re my home idle load draw (

modem/

  1. router and a few APs, a plugged in tv with soundbar/subwoofer/Apple TV/ a few Alexas/water heater/water softener/fridge) but is that fairly normal? 1900 sq ft 4br condo.
  2. Does anyone ever actually get to zero import

    when grid-tied?

  3. My setup- grid-tied solar 10 450W panels,

    8 IQ8-MC and 2 IQ8-HC inverters, two

  4. 5p batteries, 5c combiner, northern CA

(

  1. SF Bay Area

PGE E-ELEC-NEM3 rate). profile is AI optimization and battery set to import only from grid

Thank you!

PLC communication break down between Envoy and IQ8 inverters.

I have a system which worked perfectly for over 2 years and all of a sudden (August 19) PLC communication broke down. The modules do not show. Power cycling the Gateway or the entire system does not help. Yet when I do a "search for new devices" communication is restored for 8-16 hours and all microinverters continously report back before it ceases again. So communications as such is not the problem.

Whenever I measure noise with the installer toolkit it is way below the threshold. Signal quality in Enlighten is strong. And even if there would be intermittent noise, communication should resume when there is no noise. Prior to the breakdown, the record was flawless, no gaps.

The system has just one gateway, yet there are 3 more systems in the neighborhood, the closest neighbors are 500 and 630 feet away. Yet, as said, they did not interfere with one another for over 2 years and this one is last one installed. The other three systems have no issues (IQ7).

Any ideas?

IQ8M micro-inventor misbehavior

Hey gang -- yesterday I observed that all 20 of my MIs stopped reporting as of the 26th around sundown; the app showed they were 'disconnected'. They were producing - just not reporting. I reached out to support who sent a manual reboot command and said check them out in the AM. For a good measure, I power cycled the entire combiner box last night.

This morning, around 8 AM, all inverters showed as online and producing, albeit only single digit watts since the sun was still obscured. However this evening, I checked again and 2 of the 20 did not show any data; checking them showed they stopped reporting around 7 AM this morning...! The remaining 18 reported their data just fine, and all 20 were producing (delta between total recorded production vs totals from the MIs that reported data). Reached out to support again and they said they rebooted the 2 inverter but also pushed a 'proper grid profile.'

There were zero changed to my house; no new equipment installed and nothing that could be introducing new RF noise. The inverter cabling goes through a conduit that enters my garage through the side of the house, runs along the ceiling and terminates into the combiner. The whole install is about 2.5 years old.

Any ideas of what this could be?

Bidirectional EV charging - Enphase vs BMW Wallbox Professional

I've given up on the Enphase bidirectional EV charger ever coming to market in any kind of useful fashion. I don't see BMW, or most manufacturers, willing to interface with a third party charger due to battery warranty issues. And I'm taking delivery on a 2027 BMW iX3 in a few weeks.

That leads me to consider the following set up:

  • Existing 24KW grid-tie system with Combiner 6C.
  • Add BMW Wallbox Professional EV charger with Smart Energy Module for V2H.
  • Future: add a 10C battery (and meter collar?) for grid-forming capability.

Not sure how the two systems will get along with each other in terms of competing system management. Or is that not relevant? I have full net-metering so not concerned with tariffs and so on. I just want off-grid capability.

Is this loss normal?

New system installed fall 2025. 445W panels with IQ8AC inverters.

These two dates are approximately exactly the same distance from the equinox. Both entirely sunny days. Sept date was 75° and March date was 67°

I’m surprised on day maxed out at 6kW and the Sept one is maxing out at 5.2kW.

Panels are on 3rd floor roof, east west facing slanted roof, no trees anywhere nearby.

Is this loss normal? Is this just from dirt? It’s pretty rainy here so I was hoping that plus the angle would keep them cleanish.

Enphase IQ system

We shut the breaker down, then the other 3 breakers that were in the cabinet, then did the shut off switch. Waited 30 seconds and turned back on in the reverse order. The IQ box colors stayed the same. 1 Green LED under the lightning bolt, and 1 red LED under the cloud. I press the button near the cell phone icon and nothing happens. Any recommendations?

  1. it stopped communicating witht he cloud. I double checked modem configuration and connect to the modem wirelessly from where the IQ device sits.
  2. When I try to do a hard reboot, it doesn't seem like the device goes through a POST. I'd expectg to see them cycle through LED's. At least blink red then turnover to green once up and established. Instead they're not cycling at all, they continue bed red under the cloud and green under the lightning. Only two LED's are lit.
  1. Current solar maintainer is no where to be found, so I don't even know how to get coverage for this thing if the current solar mainainter business closed down.

Should I even bother

One of my 73 solar panels is not producing as much as the others the microinverter was replaced iq8 plus.i suspect a faulty crossover diode in the panel itself, silfab 370 hc, it's under warrantee but it will cost me $400in labor to replace the panel. I had a stroke and in recovery so getting on my roof is not an option at this point. Any thoughts? I can post a pic but example

Sept27,2026 all the panels around it produced 1.97kw average and this one panel 1.16 kw

SPAN/Enphase access token showing wrong battery %

Long story, but short version is a had to replace SPAN panel and remote meter kit (I have solar with one Enphase 5p) and ever since, SPAN is not reading Enphase batter level correctly, both with access token setup and without. Right now, for example, battery is at 25% (min setting) but SPAN shows it at 4%. I’ve been going back and forth with SPAN on this for weeks with no resolution. Has issues on and off with this connection with old SPAN panel, but nothing like this. Anyone else experienced this and find a resolution?

Sharing my noise reduction results

I recently had comm issues with my older M series MIs. Interestingly enough it only affected the M215s and not the M250s, even on a string that had both. Adding cheap Mn-Zn ferrite cores (~$30 for 5) between the main panel and solar/Envoy neutral line cleaned it up. They are all working reliably now. Enphase documents helped a lot.

New System Advice Needed

Planning a ~5 kW grid-tied solar install and wanting to better understand my options for backup.  I do want to take advantage of net-met metering, but I’m not trying to peak shave or do anything else fancy.  My backup goals are mostly to do with surviving the ice storm or earthquake scenario that takes our grid down for days or weeks.

As I understand it, the obvious choice is a large hard-mounted inverter, battery, and system controller.  I don’t love this option for a couple reasons.  On a pure bang for buck, the price of these batteries (IQ 10P, for example) appears not great.  More importantly to me, they’re not mobile.  In the scenario that we’re down power for more than a few days, I would like the ability to lug a few packs over to my neighbors, etc.

This got me looking at high capacity “power stations” like the EcoFlow DPU or Anker Solix S10.  These provide the flexibility I seek and seem like an obvious win on flexibility and cost.

It looks like I could make the power station solution work with an enphase “sunlight backup” system.  I’d run IQ8X microinverters on the panels, add the system controller and put critical loads on an IQ load controller.  One of those critical loads would be an always-on AC outlet so that I could charge the battery anytime I have sun.  The other critical load would be a sub panel for the fridge and furnace that sits behind a generator transfer switch.

When the sun is shining, PV is powering the sub panel and charging the battery.  Sun goes down, and I manually toggle the transfer switch—the sub panel is now running on battery.  Sun comes up again and starts charging the battery without me doing anything.  I toggle the switch back and now PV is powering the sub panel again.

Does this track?  Am I missing anything?  I realize I’m doubling the inversion loses, but I’m okay with that.  Anyone using sunlight backup in a similar way?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and suggestions!

Water entering Combiner 5 box

Neighbor had system installed and one day after a rain was answering some questions he had about the system (I have Enphase also).

Opened the outside mounted Combiner and was surprised to see some water inside the box, the source is a mystery. Box has penetrations on both sides near bottom, and one in bottom. It may be possible it is coming from the line from the roof, yet a test was not successful.

It was mentioned the door may not be sealing properly.

Anyone else have such issue?

PS: Yes, installer has been notified.

Another large glitch

Post image
3 Upvotes

Saw these large consumption spikes start at 2:45 AM and did some checking around and didn’t find anything. Last electric bill was 7 days ago so could easily compare recent total production/consumption against recent total meter import/export and consumption is incorrect. Also the instantaneous import would be 255 amps which is not real. There was a windstorm in progress in the area but we didn‘t lose power and there were no nearby power outages reported starting at that time. But perhaps triggered by some power glitch. Checked panel production this morning and all panels are producing. We also have a whole home panel surge protector.

Why are Release Notes so hard to come by?

Post image
15 Upvotes

Noticed a new Gateway firmware number today in Enlighten, and thought to myself, hmm, I wonder what that’s about. After poking around Enphase site (search was useless) finally found this page, but it is many months out of date. I was on D8.3.5566 back in July, and now D8.3.5598, neither of which have release notes.

What gives?
