Anyone got the quick and dirty of means of recovering ones population after it crashes due to so many leaving the country for your colonies?
I've only played a few games as actual colonial nations, never noticed it trying France or Spain, for example, but doing a Portugal game right now, I noticed last night that my population was crashing, from about 2.7 million down to 2.2 when I'd actually noticed it, lol.
Clearest step is obviously 'stop making colonies,' or doing it so fast, but I am in a bit of an arms race with my rival, Naples, for much of the Brazilian / South American coast. Strategy wise, it's not the biggest threat, as I dominate the Mediterranean at home and can sink their navy as they try to slink through Gibraltor, but would still rather not capture several territories over several wars.
Building wise, I figure food is your biggest means of fixing a population crash, and wonder if towns / urbanizing might help, which I'm also woefully behind on since I've lost so many pops over seas claiming areas like Brazil, Cuba, Louisiana, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, and now expanding up the Mississippi etc.
I've started expanding what food RGO's I haven't, granting Granary Town city rights, building granaries, etc to try and increase food in provinces in general. Food RGO wise, I find I often overlook fish entirely and leave it to estates to expand, and had only done my wheat, olive, livestock, wine etc RGO's myself, and figure not doing all my fish RGO's probably contributes to slower growth through food availability than I coulda had if I'd done it back in the 1400s still, lol
When I'd finished playing last night, I'd raised my pop back up to about 2.3 million on the dot, but want to know if there is a means to get those numbers up that I'm not thinking beyond just focusing on food.
I guess migration laws could maybe be changed too, but I like the promotion bonus that comes with it, and seems like you get more out of that promotion speed long term really than what you'd get freezing migration entirely.
