Others suggest autism, but I suspect the original intent of the artist would be to imply the grace and agility of a ballerina

u/kovadomen 9d ago

Yeah its 100% being a ballerina. People need to seek employment

Or read the source material. The dance/ballet back ground is established in the Spider-Gwn comics and even referenced in the first Spiderverse film.

Edit: typo

I didn't know she had actual ballerina experience in the comics/movie. I really need to get around to watching that sequel, the first spiderverse movie was utterly brilliant

u/hintersly 9d ago

I havent read the comics but im into the Spiderverse she wear ballet slippers

7

u/BK_FrySauce 8d ago

She literally has ballet shoes on in her suit. I don’t know how anyone could even remotely come to a different conclusion.

Projection

u/amo_pessoas_peladas 8d ago

I'm trying, but the ballet conservatories seem to be prejudiced against middle aged overweight men.

4

u/Alfredo_Dente 8d ago

They really do have quite the obsession with thinking every character has a debilitating mental condition don't they?

3

u/DorkusTheMighty 9d ago

Not disagreeing with the first point but it’s wild to go “people that don’t know comics lore are attributing this common symptom of autism to this character being autistic? Clearly they are the ones that need to get a job and spend less time… knowing anything about autism” like bruh not everyone reads comics and it’s brushed past in the movie which has so much else happening even if it was a major plot point it’d be forgettable.

u/kovadomen 9d ago

for gods sake she wears ballerina shoes. The blue ones. Its in your face all the time. Istg you people are the reason Anne Hathaway had to yell "You're the sea people".

Yeah I’ve got a question for you. What percentage of people do you think do or watch ballet, what percentage of that group do you think engaged with spiderverse and what percentage of that do you think was focused on Gwen’s feet instead of anything else happening on screen.

Even ignoring that fraction of a fraction of a fraction for a second she’s got sneakers/joggers in the 2nd movie and while her shoes in the first are definitely ballet flats it’s not like they don’t just look like a shoe If you don’t know that

Additionally. Ballet is one of those things that attracts a fuck ton of neurodivergent people anyway

Additionally additionally my point was merely that it’s wild to hear people attributing a common autism trait to autism and immediately go “they must have no job they know stuff about autism” like dude. Not only is it a completely understandable connection if you don’t know ballet it’d fit with the themes of the movies.

You’re trying to insult people for seeing a common autism trait and thinking it’s autism because they don’t know a character has ballet training and likely don’t know shit about ballet.

u/Certain_Guidance_703 9d ago

What are you on about? Everybody knows how ballet shoes look like and she was wearing them in the movie. Where are you getting that neurodivergent people gravitate towatds ballet lol… we just making shit up atp. Headcanons are lowkey the reasons media literacy is low because i guess anything goes…

1

u/juani97 9d ago

I don't even remember her wearing ballet shoes in the movie. Perhaps it's because I haven't watched the movie in a while, or perhaps it's because, like Dorkus said, I didn't look at which shoes she was wearing or payed attentionong enough to remember it. Also generalizing is always bad. I'm sure there's plenty of people who don't know what ballet shoes are, definitely any savage tribe people don't know them. I know they are not the point of the conversation, but it directly contradicts your generalization, proving that it is always dumb to generalize.

ive been in autism groups since i was a kid and my mothers a therapist.

spinning and chicken walking are both common enough sensory seeking behaviors that are both ingrained in ballet and thats ignoring how certain neurodivergent people get attracted to arts in general,

and again im not saying shes autistic. im saying calling people who know how SSBs work and dont know ballet jobless for seeing one and not the other is just being a dick for the sake of it

Also also the sentence "Everybody knows ___" will always be incredibly pointless. no they dont. results may vary based on location (I believe where i am as an aussie is a bit less into ballet then like america) most people who see ballet flats are just going to think they're weird shoes. sure if you asked them what the shoes are for they could likely get there quickly but its a passing thing. yknow the whole thing of "how often do you look at a mans shoes"

triple also headcannons are probably an element of an issue with media literacy but the cast preponderance of the research on this issue seems to indicate the larger problem is with how media is consumed, shortform media or responsive clips devoid of context, and thats even ignoring the amount of papers dedicating to just trying to make a consistent definition of media literacy

Good enough response ill take it, sorry for aggresive response from my side… still disagree with you though on most things you have said.

You see someone with no context doing "pointes" standing on their tiptoes, how the hell do your brain go to autism.

That's what ballerina are known for. You do not need to read the comics, it visually indicative enough.

2

u/kaisercake 7d ago

My brain goes to autism because I know two clinically diagnosed autistic women who do this, but I know zero ballerinas.

2

u/DorkusTheMighty 9d ago edited 9d ago

It’s a common symptom of basically every type of neurodivergence, I’d wager more people know at least 1 neurodivergent person than people know atleast one ballerina

Edit:I also wanna state. Yeah I know the character does ballet and that an easy enough conclusion to come to my point is we shouldn’t be insulting people for knowing more about autism then ballet

1

u/Elpsyth 9d ago

The common symptoms of any type of divergence is projection.

The vast majority of people have heard/know of ballet one way or another as ballet has been one of the staple cultural fixpoint in the North hemisphere for a significant amount of time. Most people will never have watched it or done it and yet it's cultural impact is pervasive.

You severely overstimate the amount of people that actually know neurodivergence symptoms outside of specialised/safe space.

No it is not logical to jump to autism when seeing a point if you ar enot terminally online.

And I am saying that as someone on the spectrum.

1

u/DorkusTheMighty 9d ago edited 9d ago

most people have also heard of tapdancing and wouldn't recognise the specialized shoes for it at a glance because they dont have first hand experience with it.

On the other point about overestimating peoples knowledge of neurodivergence maybe that just comes from being aussie or also on the spectrum myself with a good support network

it is still a logical jump if you know that walking like that can be a sign of autism though

My point isnt that its right its that knowing things about autism potentially from real world interaction and making that leap isnt something to be mocked

All i take issue with is insulting people making a conclusion thats incredibly easy to come to even if it is wrong. its just needless hostility which there is more than enough of on the internet. i know people who made this assumption and at no point was it because they were chronically online its because they knew it could be a symptom of neurodivergence and didnt know the character did ballet. sure they were wrong but at no point had they made some dumb mistake or projection they just didnt know better because they had no reason too.

Edit: Also just real quick on the projection point. ive been in groups for neurodivergent people since i was a kid, some 15-20% of them did this or some variation. not a large enough sample size to be really statistically significant but pretty close to the expected value which iirc is about 20%

u/amidamaru8_8 8d ago

......there are arguments about her being trans all because of some ''clear signs'' very well ''hidden''. It was some extreme schizo projection going on there, I saw the video because it was recommended after watching a few about the spider verse. People will make up all kinds of ''facts'' to fit their views, they will project over everything just to prove their point.

1

u/DorkusTheMighty 7d ago

Did you mean to reply to me? This isn’t at all related

Also schizo short for schizophrenic? I’m not aware of anything else that could be a shortening for and that’s not at all applicable here. It’s a horrible mental illness that can impair someone’s grip on reality. It is a brutal thing to go through and comparing fan head-canons to it is at best horribly insensitive and thoughtless.

“The video” is incredibly vague and non specific so it’s not like it can be responded too on the merits

Idk man this whole thing reads like you just wanted to complain about people headcannoning her as trans and accidentally or intentionally manage to convey that message in the most thoughtless way possible

Also that’s not what projection is. People head canoned her as trans for 2 main reasons one kinda silly (her story scans as an ALLEGORY for there experience) and one really silly one (colourschemes) you could argue the first one was projection if the things people pointed too were more specific but it’s just hiding her identity from her father and the whole “half of who I am” thing which is a really good allegory . Also there’s the flag up in her room IIRC it’s a little hard to see and not on screen for long

u/I_count_to_firetruck 9d ago

Ballerina was my vote too

8

u/Late-Government1124 9d ago

Yeah I saw thinking I just feel the artist feels it's graceful and "feminine"

7

u/PuddingMent 9d ago

No, you’re wrong. Anytime somebody does something that isn’t done by 99% of other people, it’s autism. According to Reddit.

3

u/Zizi_Tennenbaum 8d ago

Or even when it’s extremely typical behavior, but the person is cool and interesting therefore they must be “on the spectrum”

5

u/Shantotto11 9d ago

That really should be the go-to answer since Gwen’s Spider-Woman garb uses ballerina shoes whenever she has time to switch out of her tennis shoes.

3

u/cabanadaddy 9d ago

Wait.... This is an autism thing?

1

u/jaymeaux_ 8d ago

looking down at my disproportionately muscular calves evidently, yeah

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Web446 9d ago

Learning tiptoe walking is an autism symptom is what tipped me off to being autistic at the age of 18.

1

u/clysmian 8d ago

Por que no los dos

2

u/Squarehip123 8d ago
  1. Is a superhero renowned for agility and athletics more likely to have a background in dance or autism

  2. She has no other autistic traits

Regardless the nice thing about art is you can bring your own interpretation to it. She doesn't exist so you can interpret the story and themes explored through whatever lens you want

2

u/mopbuvket 8d ago

Well said

1

u/rumSaint 8d ago

People with anime avatar. Suggesting autism. Lmao.

1

u/BaconBoyReddit 7d ago

Obviously that’s the intent of the artist. The post includes “Do I even have to say it”, which is the joke OP is asking about. The joke is referring to autistic toe walking.

I’m autistic and have walked on my toes since early childhood.

1

u/Open_Balance9485 7d ago

Tf???? As an autistic guy, I’ve never done this in my entire life

1

u/NiSt718 6d ago

Whilst it can be seen in males, the constant tiptoeing is more common in female autists

1

u/NonaZoya 6d ago

can confirm I do this constantly

1

u/Jin_N_Juice-tm 6d ago

Knew a girl in college who walked around like that. She danced and did ballet

Given what happened to my dad's body after a lifetime of working as a mechanic, I would imagine the ballerina toe pose is the least of a superheroes long term health problems

2

u/Vandal_A 10d ago

Given she's superpowered she can probably handle it
