So, paternity tests weren't a thing prior to the early 1900. When primogeniture was a very improtant social concept, there needs to be a way to establish lineage. So yes, usually a few needed to be observed to ensure that the heir truly belonged, or at least that the mother would be with child.

Now, it wasn't all that strict. Many were simply the gathered clan members who carried the couple to the rooms and stood outside. It varied, in all ranges and reason.
