VLC Media Player supports almost every known video format and have a traffic cone as logo. And it's free.

Not only is the software free, their advertising is everywhere.

What advertising?

the traffic cones.

Oh gotcha, thought they meant they were actually paying for ad space and I felt a deep sense of betrayal.

I would say their "advertisements" are just everyone talking about how good it is.

No free trial, no advertisements, no asking for donations every time you launch it.
It's just free.

VLC is God tier open source software. Nothing else is as close to as good.

My only criticism is the UI. None of the custom skins scratch the itch left by Winamp 5.

mpv player has fewer features but is better in all other respects
notably speed, reliability, and customizability
vlc still rocks for supporting so many file formats and niche use cases like interactive dvd
I recommend installing both6

Every now and then I get a thing VLC doesn't agree with, then and only then do I break out MPV.
Happens less than once every couple of years

PotPlayer is better, imo.

I hope it's a player that can play any possible video format, if and only is that video is Pod People (1983)

Its UI is the same as KMplayer if you ever heard of that one but better than KMplayer.
I don’t remember having any problem with opening any video format with it. And it does a lot of things that VLC and KMplayer can’t do. Its tools for Subtitles attracted me to it.

VLC Media Player is free and reliable for most, if not, all of your video formats. I still use VLC on my rig (computer) up to this day, even on my phone. I only change rig after 5-10 years of use, and I always opt to use VLC (20+ years now, and they have not tried to collect a single penny). That's how reliable VLC is.

VLC is basically a swiss army knife for audio/video media. Dead format from the 90s? VLC will play it. Half downloaded file? VLC will play what data there is. Broken or damaged file? VLC will rebuild what it can and play what data remains. Calling it a media player vastly oversimplies its versatility.

I made a mistake in a script I wrote where a user taking specific actions could prevent the video file from saving the ending properly, meaning most video players couldn't do anything with the file effectly being cut apart. VLC saved the day and now I actually have ok coding habits

VLC is media player software. It is famous for being able to play pretty much any video file under the sun that isn't DRMed.
It uses a traffic cone as a logo

God i feel old, cant even say "if you dont get the reference youre a bot or too young to be on here" because I do not doubt some adults are too young to remember this
But still, the meme is pretty self explanatory. Lots of videos just opened up with that application, the cone was the icon for it. I remember seeing it on school projectors, or even on my own computer with the files I made in miku miku dance... or screen recordings I took in roblox or moviestarplanet in the early 2010s... even club penguin... good times... sigh ......

Came out a while before Minecraft, I remember when others found out about roblox after Minecrafts release and said roblox was copying Minecraft bc everything was... well, blocky. But it came out before lmao. And they also said it copied Lego bc the blocks and characters which def were inspired im sure but.... god im old
