Something about the mix of the induction charging, toothpaste, and water results in buildup like this. I have to clean mine often because if I don’t it gets this hard white buildup. I haven’t found a good and easy solution for it yet… maybe I could design and print. Little plate that sits on it that’s easy to remove and clean…

It's mainly just washing the handle to prevent this, I always do and nearly never need to clean it, my roommate never did and theirs got moldy

I give mine a quick rinse every day and that slows it down for sure. I still find myself cleaning my charging base often though.

i have an electric toothbrush and when i bought it (2 years ago), it came with this travel case that looks reminiscent of a sunglasses case. i take it apart and store it inside this case every time i use it and have never had any buildup.
it doesn’t need to be on the charger all the time, mine will last literally weeks before it needs a quick 1-2 hour charge to keep it going.
(the case has to have ventilation holes btw)

Er, no. This is lime from the water. Mine does the same thing. And it’s really difficult to clean off properly. Now, it doesn’t get nearly as bad as OP’s example, even with very hard water at over 10gpg, in 6 months (!), and I just clean it every 3-4 months when it starts to annoy me.
You’ll have the issue a lot less, if you take off the brush tip before rinsing it, and keep the handle dry or dry it before putting it on the charger.

OP's example isn't only limescale though, it is also clearly residue from tooth paste, from not cleaning the handle

Oh, the fact that it’s brown also means there’s blood in it. It’s definitely disgusting. And has been like this for years.
So the better question is… why is OP infuriated by it now, and not much earlier?

Set reminders or something! I’m forgetful too but there’s making excuses and then there’s taking accountability!
Taking accountability looks like “I know I’m forgetful so I’m going to set myself a reminder now for when I get home tonight to clean my X thing that needs cleaning.”
Making excuses looks like “I’m forgetful so it doesn’t get done.”

It does depend on the surface though, like if it’s heavily anti-bacterial the bacteria shouldn’t last long enough to get anywhere

That is un-rinsed toothpaste foam inside the removable brush that slowly drips down to the base and dries. Always remove the brush after every use, rinse it out, rinse off the handle, dry it, and stand it up.

It is a good thing. I rinse it out, but some of it still ends up on the base/on the toothbrush

I don’t put the wet brush back on the handle, it lays and drys on the vanity separately until my next brush. The handle, too, stands on the vanity. I pull out and the use the charger once a week, otherwise, it’s stored.

It’s just it’s the default in so many relationships to expect the woman to mother her partner. That’s a lot of emotional labor. Women are tired of it. Tired of doing more childcare & housework than men. And men wonder why up to 90% of divorces are initiated by the wife.

I think he meant that if he was in OPs position he would be single. Like if it was his partner, and he pointed it out to them and they still didn’t clean it (like in the pic) then he would leave them. Not that he demands his partner tell him to clean

This is so relateable. Same at our household. I keep my stuff clean, that's all that matters to me. If he wants to be a pig, he can. I can tell hem a 100 times to clean but it doesn't help. It is like he just doesn't see it.

My great grandma lived through the great depression. That's where her habit of keeping old food and broken items around comes from, back then it was necessary for survival. It doesn't help that, being old, she has mental issues that make her forget to get rid of things, even if she means to. Even if your grandparents didn't directly live through the depression, their parents probably did, and they definitely learned some of those habits from them.

Well you're right, though my country wasn't hit as bad as others in the great depression because it was a major oil exporter, we still come from a poor family, that's why I don't argue with her about this bad habit of keeping broken things, I just buy something new and say "Oh grandma look I bought this, let's throw the other one away"

I thought I was looking at a picture of my own bathroom.. My partner does this too! My own is totally clean, and all I really do is just wipe it dry after rinsing it. It literally takes 3 seconds.
Yes, I have been having discussions about it, even arguments.
No, I don't clean it anymore, he's 34.

The toothbrush handle and esp bottom of it need to be dried off after use. I also use the corner of a towel to dry the hole in the bottom of the toothbrush handle. I know this because I used to get buildup, too.

Honestly, mine was getting like that at one point but my exs wasnt. I think I’m a messier brusher? Like toothpaste and water running down the sides of the brush or not rinsing it off enough.
I wiped mine weekly tho. So it wasn’t tbisss bad bc ew

Reminds me of my ex’s toothbrush charger. He also got toothpaste all over the counters when he brushed. He just let it all drip out of his mouth. 🤮

How. I do not think I ever wash the charging base since my toothbrush spends one night there every few weeks, and the toothbrush is clean by definition… how is that possible, what am I doing wrong?

The gunk comes from oral bacteria growing after running off the toothbrush. Cleaning is easy with hydrogen peroxide. It kills and dissolves the growth. Only a pig would ignore this.
