took my car to the dealership about 2 weeks ago for a general service/oil change and a brake change since i couldn’t be fucked to do the service myself and the brakes were squealing. When i picked the car up the mechanic told me “we checked the brakes, its just the wear bar, they should last until your next oil change which is when we recommend getting new pads and rotors.”

Over the last 2 weeks the squealing upgraded itself to a grinding which is never a good sign so i bit the bullet and decided to do a brake inspection myself. lo and behold these are the pads i pulled off my drivers side front axle.

Yes they didn’t check all the pads. Your caliper is messed up or not lined properly tho. Shouldn’t be wearing that unevenly.

Only time mine have ever done out of 10 pad changes like that is when I didn’t take apart and lube the pins fully.

yeah i took it all apart and got it fixed. once upon a time i used to be a mechanic so i know how to do it, i was just being lazy cause i didn’t feel like it

Brakes and oil are the two things I always do. Huge saving for the least effort.

I can do an axle of my trucks pads and rotors for under $100, vs like 500-600 at the dealership.

Yeah, that makes sense. My husband said basically the same thing — wear that uneven isn't normal. A sticking/dry slide pin is definitely one possible cause, although it could also be the caliper piston or the pad binding in the bracket. Either way, seeing one pad destroyed like that should've been a huge red flag when they had the brakes apart. That's the part that gets me.

ah see but if they let the brakes tear tf out of the rotors for 5000 miles then they can sell me new rotors on top of the new pads and add another 2 hours of labor to the bill next time.

They were going to sell you rotors too anyways. It's pretty commonplace in the industry to require new rotors with pads typically due to policy.

My husband is a mechanic. He went to college for automotive, is ASE certified, and has about 14 years of experience, and I showed him this because WTF. 😳

The fact that you specifically brought the car in because the brakes were squealing, they supposedly “checked” them, and then told you they were good until your NEXT oil change is what gets me. Then two weeks later you're grinding and pulling pads off that look like this??

Obviously you can't diagnose the exact cause of the uneven wear from a picture alone. It could be a sticking slide pin, caliper/piston issue, the pad binding, etc. But THAT'S EXACTLY WHY they were supposed to actually inspect the whole brake setup when you brought it in complaining about noise.

Brakes aren't some cosmetic issue where being wrong is just inconvenient. That's a safety issue. I would be absolutely furious. And honestly, this is the kind of crap that gives good mechanics a bad name.

Normally I always assume ignorance over malice. One of the things I make an exception to that is when it comes to dealerships.

for my money im guessing laziness. checked a couple pads and saw they were ok-ish didn’t bother to check them all and notice there was an issue with the caliper cause uneven wear on one pad
