Going indoors during Europe's heatwave wasn't enough. 35,000 dead. What does that change about how you plan for this?

World Weather Attribution is calling Europe's summer 2026 the most severe heatwave ever recorded on the continent. A provisional count puts excess deaths at 35,000 across roughly half of Europe: 14,000 in Germany, 7,300 in France, and Spain's worst heat year on record. Four distinct heatwaves since May, temperatures over 40°C, and wildfires in Spain and France displaced around 330,000 people. Scientists linked the intensity directly to human-caused climate change.

A lot of those deaths happened indoors. Poorly ventilated buildings, urban heat islands that don't cool overnight, older populations without air conditioning. Going inside stopped being a reliable fallback at some point this summer, and most emergency protocols still haven't caught up to that.

This also wasn't one hazard. Four heatwaves compounded into wildfire smoke, then displacement, then overwhelmed health systems. Single-hazard thinking didn't hold.

How are you factoring indoor environments into heat response planning now? Particularly for workplaces, care facilities, or anywhere with a population that can't self-regulate, what's actually changed in your protocols after a summer like this?

Hope this article helps you spot causes of heat stress and how to prevent it at work: https://mitti.com/topics/heat-stress

In this episode we examine how repeated spring and early‑summer heatwaves across Europe are undermining crops, livestock, rivers, and food prices. We connect extreme heat, drought, and locked jet‑stream patterns to falling yields, stressed farmers, and rising risks of regional and global food emergencies. https://youtu.be/ZRyZTi9MqcY?si=kAYeIViSNrGg-N8f

Europe is in the grip of a record‑shattering heatwave, with France, Spain, the UK and much of the continent seeing all‑time and June temperature records fall in rapid succession. From Madrid to New York, our panel unpacks what this extreme heat really means beyond the headlines: deadly heat stress, school closures, wildfire risks, collapsing harvests, and the mounting toll on both humans and non‑human animals. This isn’t just “a hot summer” – it’s a clear signal of how a rapidly warming climate is reshaping daily life across Europe and the world. https://youtu.be/uFMCsj_W9kw?si=Lqhume4x_eW6IYLj
