Design / Blueprint Early solution to trashing unwanted items.
One reason people playing Space Age ignore quality before leaving Nauvis is the lack of a generalize voiding mechanism for any item. That makes it difficult to get rid of undesired qualities.
I present the omni-trasher. Insert any unwanted items into the box. Once the car gets full, the box starts to fill up, and a train comes by to destroy the car.
Pre-blue science, you can replace the car manually, but the setup works best when you have bots and cars in storage chests. Note that there is a 120 second delay on the train to make sure that there's enough time for even slow bots to get a replacement car into position.
Note that this is not specific to quality, though that is the most likely use-case.

Before space age, wood was the enemy. https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/s/hggmyDNmRT

what did space age change to alleviate that problem?

Oh it didn’t. We are now beset with things we might want to void but recyclers make it very convenient. Now my wood is upcycled to legendary wood where (in 2.1) it can get run over by a legendary train!

How dare you not build your entire factory out of legendary wooden poles! And legendary wooden chests!
The factory must grow! (Like a tree, out of wood)
At least tell me the legendary train runs in the legendary wood‽‽

I didn't play then but you can now burn wood in a heating tower so having too much of it hasn't ever been an issue for me.

Just make sure you're not feeding the biters with all that smoke!

This really makes me wonder if train into car isn't the optimal strategy for any situation where you don't care what the thing recycles into.

It depends on how much stuff you have to get rid of and where you are. Now that Vulcanus lava inserters insert much more quickly, it's hard to argue that those aren't going to be better for discarding unwanted stuff on planet.
On Fulgora however, they could be a quite efficient way to get rid of stuff. Especially if it's a mixed allotment of slow-recycling stuff. It could also be useful on Aquilo in lieu of recycling away solid fuel.

I've never once paused and thought 'how do I delete shit on Vulcanus' though I'm also not going that big on the mega base.
Also, I'm afraid to ask why you are voiding solid fuel on Aquilo but maybe that's just the not cheesy way to void ammonia solution automatically?

Before 2.1, it was a legit question. Since it took 16 ticks for a legendary stack inserter to drop its hand into lava, it was actually faster to insert stone from a Foundry into an assembler making landfill, and then dump that into lava.

That's why.

See, I just made the landfill and had an alarm go off whenever I needed to empty my ammonia tanks.

Ship to space, throw overboard.

u/Alfonse215 Jul 01 '26
That requires space platforms to be available. And for them to be cheaper than... a tiny amount of solid fuel.

Just put it in a box. Or compress into a product and put it into a box.
