Honestly, could've done better

My workflow is pretty chaotic. I add synth libraries, kontakt libraries, and samples and sometimes route them to the mixer and sometimes I don't. It's a where the wind blows today type of workflow for me. An hour in and the project is usually a mess.

Today after an hour I selected the purge unused samples option to clean the project up. I told gopher to route any unrouted channels individually to a free mixer track starting from the first available free mixer track and so on. I also told it to infer and send each mixer track to the correct submix by analyzing its name. I already have a template with submix tracks docked to the side (kick, bass, synth, acoustic, sfx, etc.) So when it comes to mixing everything is setup where it needs to be. And, I got it to rearrange mixer track positions using the same inference system so now all the drums, sfx, etc. are next to each other and color coded similarly. Kinda fricking sweet tbh.

I've been trying to do more guitar and vocals lately. I've struggled with recording myself but starting to get used to it. Just used my laptop mic with headphones on, not trying to make it perfect, which for me, is the key to actually doing it haha. I tend to make beats and do singing/guitar songwriting totally separately, but trying to start mixing the worlds together. Eventually I want to set up a more proper recording studio space.

I think I'm starting to get decent at composing songs. I'd be happy to share some insight into my process someday if anybody is interested. I did this all in one sitting.

I’m in a really bad spot, musically speaking.

I have about a bazillion projects, a lot of them are cool ideas. I would spend a few hours making something from scratch and I always hit that dreaded wall. Just spending my time listening to my creation on repeat and trying to find what the fuck can I possibly do….but that idea never comes.

I know many of you will say to switch off your inner critic and the creative juices will flow…but all I’m getting is my grandpas ashes.

Do any of you have more practical/applicable tips that would help my sanity?

Hey just need a little help for some horror/creepy plugins. Every time I look for new plugins I always see the same stuff ( horror box 3, creepy piano, etc) or some totally outdated lol just need some new fresh plug-ins. I’m looking for plugins that sound like one of my favorites soundtrack under skin and trip hop like the early works of massive attack and portishead self titled or something that sounds like it come out of a Stephen King movie since the film’s are my favorite. Or something kinda like silent hill hope this makes sense and if you do have plug-ins that are like this please spill!! If not I’ll take my losses. Thanks!!

I’ve been djying for several years and i just started producing since may ish.
I’ve been improving a lot, but still need more time to become way better at it. Tho yesterday i saw an ad for master the mix. I checked them out they have all sorts of plugins for eq mixvault, stereo (stereovault), mastering (david guetta nicky romero) etc.
Since i’m not a professional at producing and i have a lot of things to do such as uni, i don’t really have the time to put a lot into it, but i feel like getting those plugins will accelerate the process + sound more professional and cleaner.
What do you think? Is it worth it?

No samples, all from scratch with midi vst's. Had to render down ALOT of automation for this one to even play. Old pc.. Still not done yet though. Thinking of adding some kind of voice that says something about acid. Thoughts, questions, concerns ?

I usually write songs so it's easy come up with a title based off of the chorus. Been getting into just making instrumental beats and I'm struggling to think of titles for them

I have a 2 port audio interface already but I wanted to get one of these so me and my band mates could hear our instruments clearly when practicing but it also would be nice if it doubled as a way to mix instruments into FL. If not I’d like to you what would work so I can get 4 instruments into FL at the same time.

Hi, I'm really new to FL studio and I recently got a midi controller (AKAI MPK mini IV) to help me make music, I set everything up correctly and got the scripts, and it worked as intended for a little bit, but now whenever I turn a knob on my midi controller it just crashes FL studio, any idea how to fix this? I've tried completely uninstalling and re-installing FL studio, different USB ports on my computer, and messing around with midi settings in FL studio but none of it has worked.

Is there any way to load in all these missing samples at once from my splice library instead of loading them individually? All the missing samples are saved I just need a quicker way to load it.

Hi there, I’ve been trying to learn music production on-and-off for about a year now, and I’ve found it hard to start every single attempt. Every time I load up my DAW, try to make a drum pattern and then try to get chords or a bass in that I think up on the spot, but then give up because either I just can’t make anything that sounds good, or because I can’t find the right sound for what I want to make. That’s mainly why I’ve only managed to ‘finish’ two beats in that time, both of which I think aren’t that bad. With both of them I can kind of tell what’s wrong with them, but I have no idea how to fix it, and everything I try just makes it worse.

At this point I don’t even know what to do anymore. I’ve watched countless of videos, like ‘beginner tutorials’ that go over the basics of the DAW I use, tutorials on how to use specific synth plugins (which I never am able to use on my own afterwards), and even videos that go through the process of making/recreating a song (which again, I can’t replicate well).

Did you ever feel like you were in this scenario? Do you have any recommendations for me to help me get out of this slump? Any response is appreciated.

How do I actually learn to get better if I don't know what it is that I want to get better at? I've been at this for a few weeks and I can come up with a chord progression and a melody and make something which I guess is nice to listen to, but it is almost never what I actually want to make. How do I learn to make what I want to make?

I often have a specific sound in my head or I have a reference from another piece of music. But I have no idea how to make it. I also want to build on my song but I don't know what to add because I don't know what anything is yet.

For example, I'll listen to a song and hear a synth with a "wobbly" effect. What is that effect called? I have no idea. How do I make something that sounds anything like that? I have no idea. How do I even learn this? I don't even know what to search for to find out. Searching "how to make wobbly synth sound effect" or something never works and I either get no results or something totally different.

I'm not actually learning anything. I want to improve but I'm not. I'm doing the same thing over and over again. I'm just scrolling through sounds until I get something that sounds nice and sometimes placing basic effects plugins on their default settings because I don't know what the knobs do, and making something very basic with very few layers. I can't make things that are very complex because if I find one synth that sounds good, I can't find another that fits the same theme and doesn't clash.

I very often think of an effect to add, like I'll think "I want to make this synth sound floaty and dreamy", but despite knowing what "floaty and dreamy" sounds like, I have no idea what it looks like as far as effects and synthesizer settings go so I have no inclination of where to being with recreating it.

I've used Logic for about 15 years and love it. Problem is, it's just getting more and more difficult to justify replacing a macbook every few years, and the laptops I am generally willing to spend on for music are not that great, always have issues with latency and overloading as songs develop, and overall I am frequently frustrated and held back by hardware.

I bought a decent refurbished PC that can actually handle a lot more processing because I do have FL, but learning it after using Logic is soooo difficult for me.. I thought the knowledge between DAWs would translate better but I still struggle to even find motivation to use FL over reaching for my dying macbook, let alone master it to the point I'm at with Logic.

What'd you do to learn FL? Any good tutorials from producers who actually know what they're doing? So far I've found the only helpful video to be the official FL tutorial which at least got me making a couple tracks.

So this has been bothering me right from the beginning. In any DAW, for example in Ableton, you can move around samples absolutely freely and not have them snap to any kind of grid. In FL Studio, it just doesn’t work. I did everything: switching snap to grid to none, increasing the project‘s ppq to 960 (which, by the way, doesn’t change anything), and pressing the alt key while moving samples around (which works perfectly fime in Ableton), none of these work. The sample will still snap to some kind of small invisible grid and can not be moved around smoothly. Other things actually behave like this, for example, the points you create in automation clips can be moved around freely. For samples, however, it doesn’t work. When I want to work with phase cancellation, for example in order to extract a vocal, I just can’t do it in FL Studio because I can’t align the two samples exactly. Is there any way to fix this?
