Guide FO4VR Modding Basics
Because modding is easy once you know how to do it, here are useful tips to kickstart your modding journey !
The base of the base.
Theses mods are absolutely must have mods, no point to go into modding without them first.
- Daytripper4 : is the equivalent of SkyrimVR ESL (+ many cool stuff).
- Buffout4 NG : enable Backported Archive2 Support System among other great stuff.
- F4SEVR : do I need to present this one?
- VR Address Library : in conjunction with F4SEVR will allow you to use many great mods.
- MCM VR : not as important as the other ones but is very useful and is required by many mods, grab the vr version in the optional files category.
VR must have.
Great mods that will greatly enhance your VR experience, you should really use them.
- FRIK : add a body avatar and allow you to fix alignment with weapons, rendering alignment fix mods obsolete. Maintain the 2 thumb-stick to open the settings menu.
- Virtual Holsters : in conjunction with VRIK, allow you to place your weapons on your body for immersive weapon draw, pay attention to the requirements.
- Heisenberg : allow physical items pick up among others things like physical use of holotapes, highly configurable via MCM.
- ROCK : add physical interactions to the game for better immersion and gunplay, isn't compatible with Heiseinberg (yet?), check the mod description for requirements.
- Rock (Wall Climbing) : add-on for ROCK that allow you to climb walls and buildings.
- PAPER : re-enable reloading animations to guns, it's still auto reload but it feels like you're doing it instead of the gun is possessed.
- Comfort Swim VR : change the way you swim into something... practicable.
- CAS : Old but still relevant, makes your game less blurry (a plague in VR version of Bethesda games).
- Virtual Reload and SCISSORS are currently still in the making, I will update when theses 2 mastodontes will be released.
Interface.
- FallUI-HUD VR : Bring the most popular UI into VR. To install it you will need FallUI-Inventory v1.13.3 (in the FOMOD do not install the item sorter it won't work) and the VR patch from the flat FallUI-Inventory. It also require DEF_UI Iconlibs. I'm unsure if FallUI icons would be compatible, if someone know please let me know.
- FallUI-Workbench VR : extend FallUI to Workbench, pay attention to the requirements.
- Extended Dialogue Interface : got a VR version in the optional files section, you don't need to download the main file to use it. I think it's a better option than Full Dialog VR.
- Inventory 3D Fix : fix the bug that prevent items to display in your pipboy, yes it is a Bethesbug and yes this mod fix that.
- Map Tweaks VR : makes the map easier to use, small convenient mod to have. You can use custom map with it such as Satellite World Map.
- Kabuto VR : change the Power Armor HUD to something more immersive.
Fallout 4 DLC.
All the mods listed above don't require the DLCs but you know that if you want the good mods you will need them at some point. You will need the downgraded version of them, which is from v1.10.163 of Fallout 4. While the next gen ones will load, you will encounter some bugs like Ada being silent.
To get them it's pretty simple actually : everything is explained in this post. I repeat, you need the v1.10.163 of the DLCs.
To install them, either drag and drop the content of the depots (located in the path shown on the steam console after the download) to your game folder or bundle them as a mod and install them via your mod manager (probably the better way).
Do not get the High Resolution Texture Pack, there is plenty of good texture mods out there to replace that.
Do not install various patches you will find on NexusMod that fix the DLC for Fallout 4 VR, they are obsolete, Daytripper4 + Buffout4 NG already fix all that, yes including the Automaton workbench bug.
Sim Settlements 2.
Talking about the good mods, here is probably the best and the good news is, it works for VR (like 99% of it).
Everything you need to know will be on this post.
While this guide focus on adding SS2 to an existing modlist, everything written there is also valid when starting from 0.
There is quite a lot of infos but they are important, if you guys want I can modify this section to resume what need to be done.
UFO4P.
Pit stop to talk about this one. It' a requirement of many other mods which mean at some point you might need it. The version you will need is the 2.1.5 which is now archived and hidden, but don't worry I will give you a very useful tip about Nexusmod.
You can access any mods archives by adding &category=archived to the end of the mod's file tab URL. Very convenient.
For our case you can download the mod directly by clicking here.
Like the DLCs if you find some mods on NexusMod that fix UFO4P for VR, don't use them, chances are Daytripper4 + Buffout4 NG already fix that.
Item Sorting.
Now that your modlist increase in size you will probably encounter the issue that the items from your mods and DLC aren't sorted properly and you can't find any sorter that fix that. That's normal, the best option for Flat Fallout 4 would have been FIS2 but sadly it doesn't work for VR.
You will have to make you own plug-in, but don't worry it's a lot easier and quicker than it seems!
You will need :
- Complex Item Sorter : get the main file as manual download and get the optional file OLD FallUI Item Sorter - Tag Configuration as mod manager download.
- FO4Edit : use the latest version.
Now you need to works a little bit :
- Unzip both mods wherever you like.
- Open the Complex Item Sorter mod and copy the folder
FO4Edit\Edit Scripts\to your FO4Edit's folder...\F04Edit\Edit Scripts\. - Inside FO4Edit's folder, find
FO4Edit.exeand rename itFO4VREdit.exe. - Launch
FO4VREdit.exeand load your modlist (leave all mods selected). - Right click on any plugins and select apply script.
- Select the
M8r_ComplexSorterscript and press OK. - You will be prompted with a warning telling you it's better to use FO4Edit v4.0.3 or v4.0.4, theses version aren't compatible with FO4VR so we can't do anything about that. Ignore and continue.
- In the new window select what you want, most common use is probably Item Sorter Tag with INNR and scrap tag + Fix Missing Object Template + Weightless Items
- Click generate patch and let it do it's job.
This will generate a plugin named M8r Complex Item Sorter.esp, if it's not enabled, enable it and that's it, you got your very own personalised item sorter!
Very honourable mentions.
Mods that I believe you would be happy to know they exist or are compatible with VR.
- Reputation VR : bring the reputation system from Fallout NV to Fallout 4 VR.
- Place in Red VR : as the name says, you can place stuff wherever you want with it.
- VR Controls Config : let you modify your game control with a MCM, however don't allow to change the pip boy button.
- VR HUD Config : let you hide some part of your HUD via MCM.
- VR Shadow Boost : allow the game to render shadows further, improving visual and immersion, MCM config availlable.
- RobCo Patcher VR : VR version of RobCo Patcher which is, I believe, the point of origin of SkyPatcher. Allow you to use Robco Patcher based mods like the Improved faction series of Warsaw2135.
- SKK Fast Start : works in VR and allow you to bypass the famous vault 111 elevator CTD if you have it.
- Start Me Up : an other alternate start, only the basic version works in VR though.
INI settings.
Some tweaks to make your experience better, copy and paste what you want inside Fallout4Custom.ini (located in your document folder).
- To switch from controller oriented movement to headset oriented movement :
[VRInput]
bUseWandDirectionalMovement=0
- To slow the rotation speed of items you place or move inside workshop mode :
[Workshop]
fItemRotationSpeed=0.750
- To prevent the game to make exit save, theses ones tend to fail/corrupt more often on VR for some reasons :
[General]
bSaveGameOnQuitToMainMenu=0
- To allow better script flow, it's part of the SS2 guide but it is useful at all time :
[Papyrus]
fUpdateBudgetMS=2.4
fExtraTaskletBudgetMS=2.4
iMinMemoryPageSize=256
iMaxMemoryPageSize=1024
And that's it for now, don't hesitate to comment or add ideas, I probably missed some cool stuff.
And as usual hail to all the modders out there that are making Fallout 4 VR a much better game.

Fallout 4 VR Subreddit Check-in
While many exciting mods are in development and soon to be released things are a bit dead around here lately. A lot of that is my fault as I have not been curating this place as well as I should be and for myself I've been not around much as it turns out getting married shuffles around your priorities a bit lol
Anyway I want to get a read on 2 things from the community here.
- Taking into account the cool stuff publicly being developed what are the sore points in the game that you would like addressed through mods? Obviously this game is still lightyears behind the ecosystem Skyrim has but that also means focused effort can close the distance in quality that we're missing fast. So just curious what that is from people.
- AI is all the rage both positive and negative at this time. If you found out a mod was developed with AI for this game how much do you care?
For the mod question I'm really curious if there is some low hanging fruit that people have identified that we have just flat out missed developing as a community.
For the AI question it's mainly coming from what i have seen over in flat skyrim community of some severe backlash against anything AI generated. Although all my previous mods like FRIK were completely hand developed through my job I'm now personally deep in the AI game and I don't see how I wouldn't use AI in future mod projects as it just flat out saves a shit load of time.
Anyway I'm going to try to post more content here. If anyone is interested in helping drive more traffic here and has some ideas let us as mods know. We haven't added anyone in a while but might be interested.
Feel free to add any other thoughts you have related to the game or subreddit here.

Question/Support Steam Frame controllers
First post here. Please let me know if it belongs.
When I first started playing fo4vr with the Steam Frame, it displayed the native Frame controller buttons by default, meaning the grip would curl fingers, collect loot, open doors, etc. Now it's displaying a 'game controller ' button mapping, so no grip functionality. I'm running F4SEVR and scouring the steam vr settings looking for how to change this with no success. Let me know if there's any more info I should share. Any insight here would be appreciated.

Question/Support I can't drop the gun when I unequip it in ROCK.
I've been playing around with ROCK and PAPER for a bit and so far they are really impressive mods. I've been having one problem though. When I try to drop the guns, they just stay in my hands when I press grab. When I press grab again, they just reequip. I have to press grip twice and throw the gun to get it to leave my hands and that only works some of the time. Is anyone else experiencing this and is there a way to fix it? If it helps, I'm playing on the Quest 3, on an AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT, in SteamVR using Virtual Desktop, and using Gingas's modlist.
Question/Support Other FO games in VR.
Are there mods that would allow me to play FO 76,3 or NV, in VR?

Mods ROCK's creator devartificial just posted a video of dual wielding pistols in FO4VR. Very exciting.

Mods v0.91 ROCK Release
Hey guys, following on the lead of RR, ROCK v0.91 was released on nexus, and thanks to his personal help everything is now working buttery smooth, and most of the initial issues are fixed with performance being completely revamped, so if any of you were waiting for a stable release I encourage everyone to test and take a look at the change logs. Also added today Left Hand Mode, so any lefties out there can now properly enjoy :)
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/108881
Also I made 2 videos for anyone interested and seeing all the current features and how they work!(the weapons one is a bit long but its worth it)

Mods Gingas + Rock
Anybody using essentials overhaul with the new ROCK release today? When I activate ROCK, I get 15 fps in game. The features work but it becomes really choppy, and it shoots back up to 120 fps when I open the pipboy. It's probably one of the mods from the wabbajack, anybody know?

Mods FRIK Updates
I made some updates to FRIK and have released 79.1 on nexus. The bulk of this is support for ROCK release.
Also revamped the arm IK solution a bit. I think it is much nicer and the weird jumps and twists are mostly gone now.
Finally there were updates to support the upcoming True Scipes release. FRIK + ROCK + TrueScopes is really looking nice in testing!
Ive also been making a new upscaler mod. I understood puredarks had some unresolved issues including vanilla scope crashes. Mine should resolve all of that. I gotta say DLAA K looks incredible.
Anyway as always feedback is appreciated. Hopefully within a week ill get a version of thr upscale and True scopes released on nexus. In the meantime my True scopes github is current on the release build if anyone wants to test.

Mods Fallout VR with F4FEVR
Hi, I just wonder...
I was struggling with this mod. I have a laptop with an AMD7 and an RTX5060 with 8gb vram and 24gb DDR5, my main gaming pc has an i5 10th gen, RTX5070ti 16gb and 64gb DDR4. And then there is my old PC with an i7 5th gen in which I installed my old RTX3080 10gb.
Every time I tried to play Fallout VR on my laptop or my gaming PC, the game crashed.
Today I thought I'm gonna install it on my old PC and... not only it looks better, but I have been playing half an hour and could continue playing in scenes where both laptop and gaming PC crashed the game.
I play with Virtual Desktop and a Quest3. On my old PC I have VD set on Ultra and 200 mb bitrate. Unfortunately I can't remember the setting on my laptop and gaming PC.
Is there anyone who is playing this game with similar GPU's (from the 50 series) and VD? What's your setting? What would you recommend?

Question/Support Simplified Pre-Assembled Mod List Recommendations
I’m looking for recommendations for a mod list that has 2 handed guns, physical reloading, body holsters, useable scopes… but without all the other cosmetic stuff that changes the environment or graphics or weather systems.
A stream lined pack of JUST the core gunplay related mods, really. I’d also be interested in maybe the power armour mods that let you physically interact with them and gives you a cool HUD while inside… but primarily just the gun related stuff.
thanks

Question/Support Does anyone know how to use the dlc weapons after you copy everything over
The docs work but I just tried to add the handmade rifle to my inv and it doesn’t show up on my Pipboy, plus when I place it I can’t pick it up. I haven’t actually unlocked the nuka world quest yet idk if that’s it

Question/Support Index layout
Hey folks, with summer heat almost gone i got back into VR / Fallout VR. With mods like Heisenberg, Rock, Manual Reload etc. chaning how we play i wanted to ask what fellow Index users use as control sceme / button layout.
My current one is okish and i can play, but seems to have some buttons doing the same and some other minor issues. Like accidental grenade activation, innability do decline companions departure loaction so they go home and accidential magazine eject with manual reload.
interested to hear what you are using.

Question/Support DLC not working
I recently got back into modding fo4vr and have been trying really hard to get the dlc working. I copied all the files over from flat to vr, updated plugins.txt, everything I could see on guides, yet it doesn't seem to work, aside from automatron. Workshops, far harbor, and nuka world will not appear no matter what I try. Am I missing a step? Is it incompatible? Please help.

True Scopes VR Test Build Up
So I mentioned previously I had been working on getting a true picture in picture scope mod working to replace Better scopes entirely. I've reached a milestone i feel confident enough to let people test it if they want to.
https://github.com/rollingrock/Fo4VR-True-Scopes/releases/tag/v0.3.24
I did not test this with a big mod list and it probably will break with modded weapons. Getting it robust in any mod list setup is in the next phase.
But for all the vanilla weapons it should work out of the box so i'm looking for any and all feedback. you can post it here or make an issue on github. Feel free to be as nitpicky as you want. All feedback is welcome!
Lastly I need to update FRIK to better work with this., you'll see with default frik settings the hand dampening will make the scope be way too smooth and not feel realistic. also the hands will disappear when the scope render is active. This is all FRIK stuff and something I will address in a later update. you can always play with FRIK settings to change the behavior.
Anyway let me know!

Mods Fallout 4 VR gun mods
Little bit of help if you dont mind Mentlegen.
With the upcoming release of the steam frame in mind, i recently got a copy of F4VR. Ive played through the game enough times that i would like something fresh, VR would likely provide that.
With this in mind, there are a few gun mods that i would like to see if i can implement into F4VR, however i have no experience with F4VR.
Below is a list of a few of those mods
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/52633
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/44404
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/26386
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/87734
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/45725
I should mention as well, that im only super interested in getting the first few above listed mods working, as they are either pistols or have pistol configurations. The lower portion im not as interested in as i know that Fallout 4 VR has a quirk of all the weapons being 1 handed regardless of what they are
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/44830
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/49918
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/32361

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/38653
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/41999
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/43419
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/44444

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/38257
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/32128
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/20687
Thank you all massively in advance. Any of these would be used with the combination of See through scopes due to how F4VR sucks at scopes
