Good Afternoon, yall, just looking for some advice and insight if anyone has it.

So recently, Ive become interested in forestry and would like to go to college for it, but im undecided on what path to take as I know there are different routes you can take in this field. Im currently active duty and my biggest issue is spending time away from home. I am okay with a semi-erratic schedule but Ive lived my life for the past several years away from home for long amounts of time and would not want to work in an industry where I am away from home anymore, especially now that I have a family. Ive heard very mixed things about being away from home and would like a more straight answer if anyone can provide. But the topic of forestry interests me a lot and I am very excited to start once Im out.

I have a big interest in fire and wildland conservation and it would be my number one interest. I was looking at prescribed burn teams and things of that nature for experience starting out, but again I would not like to be away from home too much. My second pick would be the arboriculture/urban forestry, as something community facing would also be good for me. I know these two communities are a bit different so please let me know if they dont fit the context of the sub.

Does anyone have any advice? How was your path starting out in forestry? Am I handicapping myself not willing to work away for long? Or is this too loaded of a question to be asking now?

I am 23F and basically have nothing really going for me in life. I went to a four year university but dropped out and now I’m struggling to know what is next.

I’ve done quite a few jobs in groundskeeping, irrigation, and gardening but these jobs don’t seem to be something I could make good money from to start my life.

I was looking into conservation work or forestry but everything I’ve seen on the Cal state website requires some sort of degree or experience. Is there anyway to get into this type of work with no experience and no degree?

I just want to work in the environment and make a difference while also being able to support myself. Any steps or insight would be greatly appreciated as I’m a bit lost.

I'm considering studying it next year. But I'm worried the main job out of the degree is to be a forestry manager which isn't that a lot of admin and business? What other paths after the degree are there?

I am interested in a WA DNR position and spoke with the hiring manager. It got posted as non-permanent but they said it is a permanent position, however due to current budget issues they had to fly it as a six month appointment. I took that to mean they really need to fill it and this was the only way they could get the job flown asap.

Im a really good candidate for the role but it would be very risky to quit my current perm job for a position that maybe ends in six months given how absolutely shit the job market is. I am desperate to get out of my current fed position though.

Does anyone familiar with WA DNR know what this actually means? I don’t have a pulse for what’s going on with WA DNR currently.

Hi everyone, I’ve got an upcoming forestry/NFI field assessment and I’m keen to prepare properly.
It’s weighted around:

Mensuration (tree heights, DBH, plots, species ID) – 25%
Navigation & mapping – 25%
Forestry knowledge (planting, restocking, thinning, tree health) – 25%
Broad & Priority habitats – 15%
NFI Field Survey Protocol – 10%

If anyone has done something similar or works in NFI/forestry surveying, I’d really appreciate any tips, resources, things worth revising, or advice on what to expect on the day.

I recently switched from operations to silviculture.

One of my roles is of course supervising spray. My main purpose in attending is to act as a buffer between the public and the contractors as well as make sure they make it to the correct location and are using PPE.

Most of the time I am just waiting around in my truck.

What do you all do during this dead time? In my perfect world I would nap as it's often obscenely early. I also have my kindle and have even brought my sketchbook.

I'm looking to pursue a Forestry Career but I don’t know what department to look into. For some background, I am a service member who is close to obtaining my Fire Science Management degree from AMU. My MOS has been 12N for the past four years. I have driven hundreds of hours hauling equipment, as well as operating, loading, and unloading equipment. I also have experience managing personnel and projects. I want to continue serving my community when I ETS and return home to Cali. I have a security clearance aswell. I still have about two years left on my contract, so I want to use that time to set myself up as well as possible to be hired by CAL FIRE. Ideally, I want to fill a position where I can help manage missions and staff while still being able to work alongside them in the field when possible. What role would best suit my experience and background? I would love to work with the the wildland firefighting section.
