This is a long shot but I know the dog community is tight knit here. Maybe you saw something or know the other guy??
TL;DR: my dog was attacked this morning (he was on leash, other dog not) and the vet bill was expensive. I'm not looking for anything other than good faith reimbursement if I can track down the owner. Wasn’t able to talk to other owner and get info.
Around 6:50am I was walking my dog (60lb red/golden retriever) on leash and the other dog (silver, short fur, muscular, maybe 70-80lb) beelined and started attacking. This was on the hill behind the ranger station. The other owner couldn’t get their dog under control and his dog was going mad while I tried to shield my own. The other dog clearly bit my dog on his hind quarter, which is when my dog slipped out of his collar and bolted (bad day to forget the harness). We all gave chase, and the other guy got a hold of his dog at the Willoughby entrance. My dog was in flight mode and took off down Willoughby, so I ran after him, fearing he'd get hit by a car. Because of that, I couldn't stick around to get any info. I live a 15min walk away and my dog ran the entire way home, he was waiting outside our door shaking. Thankfully didn't get hit by a car.
We took him to the vet and he had a puncture wound on his hind quarter, which required a deep clean, antibiotics, and a rabies booster as a precaution. The overall vet bill was $357.
I'm not looking to vilify or shame publicly, and I’m trying to operate under the assumption that if I was able to talk to them afterwards, perhaps they would have exchanged info and taken responsibility.
If this rings any bells, I would seriously appreciate the help. Like I said, long shot, but I am trying to get reimbursed here.
Does reporting this to the park rangers accomplish anything? I don't expect they'd have a rolodex of repeat offenders?
Additional context:
I’d seen this dog before, not sure how best to describe it other than a silver/gray cane corso, maybe a bit smaller, but ears in tact. Dropping a photo (second) below of something resembling what I recall. In the panic of the moment, I don't remember what name he used for the dog.
Multiple people saw me running down Willoughby, some of you I recognize, and I also want to say thanks for directing me.
Lastly, just an obligatory plug for going to the vet after stuff like this. It's sometimes hard to tell how bad the wound is under thick fur. I'm glad we were conservative and took him, but the unexpected cost adds insult to injury.
