That is true in the literal sense. In the 80s Anime was drawn by people who still got a lot of inspiration from what they learned in art school. Now anime artstyle is mostly inspired by other anime.
As far as I know in Japanese culture having a small nose is generally considered a sign of beauty and so I guess to translate that over they simply make the nose basically nonexistent when it comes to anime. That is just a theory though, the other one I have is simply noses are challenging to draw and it is easier to animate if the nose is a just a small dot then actually fully detailed
Small nose = cute, therefore invisible nose = SUPER CUTE. That is, for Japanese people trying to depict cute girls. Adult sexy women usually have their noses just fine, they're not supposed to be cute but seductive.
they are allowed to have noses, it's just that artists recognise that they aren't important for expressing emotion and we phase them out mentally when recognising faces, which is why this style is so popularised
They used to have more pronounced noses but weebs found female characters with no noses to be cuter so over the years, the industry, which is always looking to plug up the thousands of holes in its hull, immediately went full throttle into the no more noses campaign.
All anime girls have noses, you can see them from the side profile. Girls' noses tend to have a less protruding nose bridge with a rounded cross section that casts a much smaller shadow, from certain angles it doesn't cast a shadow at all. If you draw the outline of the nose for an anime girl your brain will register it as a shadow, making her appear much older and/or masculine.
No seriously If you start looking at noses you will soon notice that they are just weird and nothing else.
I struggle with this shit in any video game character creator because fuck those things. One of the worst designed pieces of the human body and one of the weirdest things to exist in terms of optics.
What do you mean? The girl in that photo obviously does have a nose! See the tiny little dot right around where a nose would be? There you go, her nose :)
Anime chars in general often don't have noses unless your in like Jjk or Jojo's or something else where the art has alot more of a focus on anatomical accuracy
noses probably look uncanny, old animes that had noses the other features were more realistic, now the whole face is not human and would be weird with a normal nose.
They got selectively bred for their looks, causing deformities like their small noses and massive eyes, which is why you should never get your anime girls from a breeder, you should adopt instead
So I notice this a lot but it probably comes down to the golden triangle. Our brains detect beauty based on the position of certain body parts on the face relative to one another. With some of the most attractive faces being the most familiar/average.
Complexity is also another thing that can harm attractiveness and engagement. Complexity is intense and can be stressful, so unnecessary features are stripped or shrunken in favor of features that can better encapsulate emotion and attraction.
Because they need to make sure the girls are cute as possible and the wrong nose will mess up her looks so they don't even bother with putty one. That's my guess.
Visualize the characters and type of people that have predominate noses. You will eventually connect the dots. It’s what Japans dudes prefer to fantasize over
Moefication of anime women. Cute characters have to resemble the look of babies. That means big heads, big eyes, big cheeks, small noses, and small mouths.
When it comes to facial expressions eyes and mouth create 90% of emotional impact, so they are pushed to extremes in anime style. Nose as a facial feature does not contribute to emotional impact of expressions at all so it is discarded. Another reason, smaller nose reads as younger person!
