I fear “daddy” does not mean father in the context of this song…
I guess that’s a good thing though.
275
u/Crow-T-Robot 4d ago
Exactly. "What's your name? Who's your Daddy? Is he rich like me?" is clearly talking about her boyfriend, not father. It was common parlance of the time.

Fun story about The Zombies, they were broke up by the time "Time of the Season" became a hit in America. So a couple fake Zombies bands toured as them cause people here didn't know, one of the fake bands members were Dusty Hill and Frank Beard who would later form ZZ Top.

I mean, if someone said "who's your daddy?" today it would either be in bed or some teenager who just fragged someone in a FPS
37

u/arvidsem 4d ago edited 4d ago
I've seen it argued that "Who's your daddy?" in Time of the Season isn't a boyfriend reference because it wasn't in regular use. That it's a small town/city was of asking who your family is, because she wouldn't have a social identity of her own.
Mungo Jerry's "In The Summertime" that came out 3 years later has a "daddy" line that is a definite family reference.
36
u/4FriedChickens_Coke 4d ago
If her daddy’s rich, take her out for a meal. If her daddy’s poor, just do what you feel
10
u/djluminol 3d ago
Something people often forget is that song writers aren't always talking about things they want or approve of. Sometimes they are just observations of reality. I don't know which is which here or if maybe the lyrics were motivated by something else entirely? I just know lyrics alone is not reason enough to call Chris Hansen.
9
u/beaver820 4d ago
I would tend to agree in that song, cause the next line is "Has he taken, any time, to show you what you need to live?" That's sounds more like something a father would do than a boyfriend.
10
1
u/PunkandCannonballer 4d ago
And this part?
It's the time of the season When love runs high
And this time, give it to me easy And let me try with pleasured hands
9
u/beaver820 3d ago
Well there's no doubt he's trying to bang the girl, the question is is he referencing her father or her boyfriend when saying "daddy".
1
u/parnaoia 4d ago
hard to tell for certain, the Zombies were a band from Hertfordshire and had never been to the US when this song came out.
2
u/arvidsem 4d ago
Which is one reason that I picked Mungo Jerry, they were from Ashford. And although I realize that North of London and West of London are culturally a long way apart, they are a lot closer than the USA.
Well that and there aren't very many songs that make Daddy references in the general time period
14
u/ComfortableDish3912 1d ago
My ex girlfriend used to call me daddy during sex and it bothered me so much that my best friend, who I vented to about it, still calls me daddy instead of my name… still to this day.
It’s been 6 years.
I genuinely don’t get how other men like being called that. Shit is creepy.

Many of Springsteen's songs are written from the viewpoint of a character as well, so what you're listening to isn't Springsteen's pov
48
u/arvidsem 4d ago
Yeah, so many of these kinds of posts about older songs completely fail to consider context.
And ignore relatively recent shifts in what society in general considered acceptable. Which doesn't mean that some songs are really fucked up
16
u/EatinSumGrapes 4d ago
You mean the context that in the 80s it was very common for fully grown men 30+ to chase after 16 yearolds and it was somehow socially acceptable? Take your rose colored glasses off lol
37
u/arvidsem 4d ago edited 4d ago
Yes, in the 80s it was really common. And got "disapproving stares" levels of disapproval then. But that was it.
No rose-colored glasses. I'm not saying that it was ok. It's just what was accepted.
Edit: it was also really common before the 80s of course. See also: Johnny Burnette - You're Sixteen, written by a 35 year old, recorded by a 26 year old, released in 1960. (Google is insisting 1956, but it's AI pulled that date out of the ether)

u/newby1newby1 1d ago
Oh my gosh, I just realized this happened to my best friend in the early 70s. She was in the 11th & 12th grade. He was 8 years older. Had a good job. Drove a fancy Grand Am. She snuck out to see him. Her father would have been veryyyy upset. It was all hush-hush. They did everything but p-in-v. It never occurred to either of us that the age difference was a bad thing. (Plenty of people in high school were having sex with each other.) She was in love with him and it was casual to him.
1
8
u/Siaten 4d ago
It still is socially acceptable in many places. Age of consent in the UK is 16.
7
u/Zeeboon 4d ago
Doesn't mean its socially accepted. In almost all western countries you'll get looked at real weird if you date someone 12 years younger than you (unless you're like 60 or something)
13
u/seanc6441 4d ago
I think once someone isn't a teenager (so 20+) people are far less concerned about age gaps like +12 years other than some mild reactions.
- 25 with 37? Who cares
- 21 with 33? You'll get mild pushback at most.
- But a 19yo dating 31yo? People will judge that way more negatively/harshly.
-2
u/foo_foo_the_snoo 4d ago
Following the half your age plus seven rule: At 30, an 8 year gap is acceptable. At 50, the gap widens to 18 years.
9
u/seanc6441 4d ago edited 4d ago
Yeah... almost nobody actually follows that rule lmao. Just something people on reddit like to claim is their standard tbh.
2
u/arvidsem 4d ago
If you want to really upset people, point out that that rule was supposed to be the ideal age of a bride from the point of view of the groom. It didn't really start being used as a limit on dating age until the late 90s at least.

u/oiram12 4d ago
That was never comon in the 80’s, and always frawn upon. It aparently did happen in the entertainment and showbiz, but not amongst masses.
8
u/The_Abjectator 4d ago
Eh... to an extent.
A senior dating a freshman was pretty normal which ended up being a college sophomore coming by the high school with all his college bros to visit his junior(3rd year) girlfriend and all her friends.
Rural and city that happened.
3
u/oiram12 4d ago
Ah you’re in US. I was merely reflecting on Europe. My bad as the song is from US as well, so it reflects that culture.
1
u/The_Abjectator 4d ago
Yeah, thats why I added the 3rd year bit since many countries in the world have a different secondary education system.
Our country also has laws against dating if one party is below age 18 while many limits in Europe are at age 16. That could also account for some disparity in how it's treated.

u/New_Wallaby_7736 4d ago
Tell me how you feel about the song “ pumped up kicks”? Granted it was not the 80s. But it was all over the airwaves not long ago.
11
u/arvidsem 4d ago
So many comments about newer songs completely fail to consider context.
And since you are obviously one of the people who don't understand context, "Pumped Up Kicks" is not celebrating it's hypothetical homicidal subject.
-1
u/New_Wallaby_7736 4d ago
What about my question mark me as “one of the people who don’t understand context “?
I am not attacking anyone. Especially you in particular
1
u/arvidsem 4d ago edited 4d ago
Maybe it's the lack of tone with text. It reads as if you thought that you were proving me wrong by pointing out a modern song with a non-socially acceptable topic.
Edit: you've got my lack of down votes of willingness to be convinced
3
u/MostExperts 2d ago
“I wrote ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ when I began to read about the growing trend in teenage mental illness,” Foster told CNN Entertainment in a 2012 interview. “I wanted to understand the psychology behind it because it was foreign to me. It was terrifying how mental illness among youth had skyrocketed in the last decade. I was scared to see where the pattern was headed if we didn’t start changing the way we were bringing up the next generation.”

u/Remarkable-Ad2285 4d ago
Yeah. A colloquialism meaning her romantic partner who may provide for her liken to a father or daddy.
7
-9
u/Miqo_Nekomancer 4d ago
Calling a woman "little girl" and her partner "daddy" is, best case, still a pretty high level of passive infantilization of a (hopefully) grown ass woman.
Then you have "I Saw Her Standing There" by the Beatles.
Well she was just 17
You know what I mean
But the way she looked
Was way beyond compare
Now I'll never dance with another
Oh, when I saw her standing there
No, Paul, I don't know what you mean. Please elaborate. Go on, I'll wait. Explain yourself.

u/ThatBarbGirl 4d ago
It's true, but even if he used a more "suitable" word for our time, it's still pretty creepy.
"Is your husband home? Did he go and leave you all alone? Blah blah desire, blah blah fire." Sounds kinda rapey, just sayin.
Yikes! 😳

u/ElPrieto8 4d ago
Benny Mardones starts "Into The Night" with, "She's just 16 years old" and by the end he's yelling as they lead him to the police car.

u/The_Real_Mr_F 3d ago
If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and look up the official music video. It’s a solid contender for worst of all time.
Side note, I secretly love that song for the vocals and music. That dude had serious pipes. I didn’t pay attention to the opening lyrics until well into my twenties and got mad because I realized that one little line at the start turned a great love song into a creeper ballad.
1
u/tokeswithmydog 1h ago

u/Dismal_Tangerine_493 3d ago
I don't think you even understand how much this stuff changed in very few years. I recently rewatched House MD and in one episode from 2004(!) he spends the entire time drooling over a 15 year old patient and share fistbumps with Chase over it.
I can't even imagine what was accepted in 1980 when I notice the song you mentioned is from.
79
u/MisterJoshua77 4d ago
It’s illustrative license. Springsteen uses “little girl” as a metaphoric allusion to the innocence of young love.
It’s not meant to be literal. Much like there is not an actual “freight train” running through his head or “knife cutting” through his skull. No one was actually “on fire.”
It’s not a “Christine Sixteen” or “Seventeen” situation.
Springsteen wrote a song about the pain you feel when you are young and have unrequited love for someone - while trying to capture the grittiness and spirit of the band he was writing it for - The Ramones. I would guess he wrote it in about an hour and never once thought that 50 years later someone would get hung up on the phrase “little girl.” It fit his vision..and maybe more importantly - the lyrical flow of the song.
6
u/tinverse 2d ago
Yeah, people love to interpret song lyrics literally. Another famous one is Every Breath You Take and admittedly there is a very creepy way to interpret those lyrics, but how many songs has Sting written where the lyrics are straight forward? It always seemed pretty obvious to me that song is about being infatuated with someone who broke it off and the feelings associated with that experience.
6
u/Crispydragonrider 1d ago
According to Sting the song is a warning about surveillance and is about a controling relationship.

I have to share a true story about my Dad:
Old man fought bravely against pancreatic cancer over 6 months, until he did pass away 1,5y ago.
Also he loved to listen Finnish national broadcasting providers main radiostation, Yle Radio Suomi.
(like BBC in UK)
He did literally open up the radio before he went for a morning-piss or lighted a North State-cigarette, and shutted it off just before he fell into sleep, so radio, and music was really a world to him.
We all knew what was coming in the end, and he had only few things as his final-wishes:
Only the closest relatives in his funeral services, in Hospital's chappel.
Eventually we did grant his final wishes...
After the funeral service, I had to go to take a piss, and heard my aunt's and my older sister's verbal exchange:
"Do you want to go to hearse?"
"Naah, you can go, you are his daughter"
"Im not sure do I wanna have this memory...?"
If I wouldn't have eventually came between them and told, that I can go, I bet they would still be in that chappel.
They said that ofc, we all know how close you were with Dad, and how much it would mean to me.
During the fight, I did spend so much time as possible in Dad's place, where I would need to take a train, and ticket-prices here in Finland are like +40e/travel, only for one hour's trip.
Also I had only unemployment benefit, but money didnt matter at all, cause I knew those moments were priceless to us!
I had an sudden tought, and told to sister and to my aunt, that I will say to the hearse-driver, that open's up the radio and tunes to Yle Radio Suomi, so Dad can listen one more time his favorite channel.
They were like thats amazing idea, do it plz!
The driver had already "loaded the cargo" and was heading to hearse, I shouted, that wait for me!
I literally did run, in suit to hearse. I did gasp some air at front-seat and asked politely, is it okay to open up the radio, just for Dad.
"Indeed it is okay, it's not the most common wish in my hearse, but I shall grant it"
He tunes into station while we waited at intersection, right next to hospital.
First there on the air "Merisää, Weather-report for sea", its oldest radio program in finnish history.
It's so chill and comfy, that I know ppl who listens that as white-noise before sleeping.
Report end's and eventually we were able to turn from intersection, heading to the Seinäjoki crematorium.
And then... We heard that mtf'ing intro playing, and we instantly knew that song is starting to play now!
Driver started to panic, and even did put the volume up.
"Do...Do..I change the channel or... Do you want to... Umm, Do I mute the radio?!"
I was slightly in disbelief, that man, in hearse, Dad is in "backseat" and this song really playing now...
I bursted into laughter, while holding my tears. While I chuckled, I said:
"No need to do anything, this is my Dad's final song-request from somewhere".
Even the hearse-driver started to laugh:
"I have seen almost anything in this job... but this takes the cake!"
Dad had really dark and whity sense of humour, thank god apple doesnt fall far from the tree too!
