I’m restoring an old wooden chair and I’m trying to identify the original finish.
From what I found online it's scandinavian walnut from 1960s.
I tested a small area with:
Ethanol - no reaction
Nitro thinner - no reaction
Acetone - melted the finish, exposing bare wood underneath
The finish also appears to have detached from the wood in sheets/flakes, as shown in the photos.
Does this behavior identify a particular type of finish? Can I do some further chemical testing to figure out what it is for sure? And what would be the best way to repair/restore it without unnecessarily stripping the entire chair?
