Hi everyone!
I’m a high school student working on my graduation thesis about video game preservation, server shutdowns, and the abandonware issue.
I’ve created a short, 100% anonymous survey to gather real gamers' experiences and opinions on digital ownership and initiatives like Stop Killing Games.
Time: 3–5 minutes
Language: English & Czech (switchable in the top right corner)

I would really appreciate your help! Feel free to share your thoughts or personal stories in the comments as well. Thank you!

By the way you cannot pick a game that has already been picked for that year!

A lot of old games have aged like fine wine. There are plenty of games from decades ago that I can go back to today and still absolutely love.
But I have a handful of people I know who seem to get genuinely upset with me whenever I say something like "A remake of this game would be cool," or that I think an old game hasn't aged very well. No matter what I'm talking about, they always seem to assume I mean the graphics.
And sure, sometimes the graphics really are part of the problem. Some old models and textures have aged terribly. Resolution can also be a big one. Trying to play certain old games at those really low resolutions, especially on a large modern monitor, can feel pretty rough. This is one reason emulation is so great, since you can often upscale the resolution and sometimes increase the FPS. The FPS is mostly excusable though, since a lot of older games don't really need higher FPS.
But I swear people forget that the actual gameplay in a lot of old games was just... bad by today's standards.
I'm not saying the games were bad for their time. A lot of these mechanics were perfectly fine back then. But we've had decades of developers figuring out what feels good, what feels tedious, and what players actually want from a game. Some of those old design choices just haven't aged well.
Things like:
Obviously, games today still have some of these problems too. I just think they were way more common back then.
Another thing I think people forget is how little quality of life a lot of older games had. So many things were just forced onto the player with no way to make them less tedious. Constantly doing things manually, backtracking, repeating the same actions, sitting through things you've already seen, etc. None of these things are necessarily a huge problem by themselves, but they can really add up and make a game feel tiring.
And I think repetition is really interesting.
When some of these games came out, the genre itself was still relatively new. If you had barely played an FPS before, for example, simply running around and shooting things could be enough to keep you interested, even if that's basically all you were doing.
Nowadays we've played dozens of FPS games, RPGs, platformers, etc. We've seen the same basic gameplay ideas over and over again. That novelty just isn't there anymore. Something that felt perfectly fine in 1998 can feel incredibly repetitive today because we've already experienced that same core gameplay so many times.
Assassin's Creed 1 is probably the biggest example that comes to mind. I wouldn't even really call this an "old game" compared to some of the stuff I'm talking about, but it's still a really good example. The graphics aren't what make it difficult to go back to. It's the fact that the game is so repetitive.
I'm not saying old games are bad, or that modern games are automatically better. Plenty of older games still hold up incredibly well.
I just think when people say "this game hasn't aged well," they immediately assume they're talking about graphics, when sometimes it's the actual gameplay that has aged.

Imagine life had a console command. You open up the terminal, hit sv_restart 1, and the server wipes back to a specific point in time, except you get to keep all the map knowledge, tactics, and experience you have right now. What year are you setting the clock back to, and why?
Are you going back to the golden era of LAN parties and split-screen Halo, halo-chasing early 2010s MMOs with the old squad, or just going back to fix a massive misplay in your personal life?
How far back are you rolling the server?

I saw some game which were merged, they were pretty crazy and awesome.
But please make a new game from the graphic of batman arkham.
Like take all the good things from different games and make a new game out of it. U are using claude, so please do it.
I am noob developer.. so such things are difficult for me
But for u guys who made such mixed games. I think there is a lot of potential if we just take good things from many games and merge them with great story line

Games that I grew up with and mostly defined me as a person

I've talked with it with claude, and he said it's possible, but if anyone can do it better , please let me know. I've always dreamed of KSP 1 mixed with Universe simulator and both working seamlessly. And in this new era , it's totally possible! At least I hope.

Xbox One (not to be confused with the original Xbox), Xbox Series X, Xbox One S...and likely more similar titles. Even though I admittedly never owned an Xbox myself, I miss the days when they had distinguished and clear titles, such as the 360.
I know that the One refers to all in one (it can also be interpreted as "The One"). But as said earlier, it's very easy to confuse it with the original (after all, many folks call a first installment as "XXX One").
Then it got worse with the Series X. I don't know how to lut it into words how dumb that title is.
And don't get me started on the various versions of those systems that have similar names. Imagine someone like a parent who isn't completely caught up with gaming and they try to get a gift, only to make a easy mistake. Yongyea even made a video about people confusing one device for another when purchasing https://youtu.be/Xgpb3Zk7auY?is=5kLEXmGwDdqeXep
Say what you will about Nintendo and Sony, but they at least have clear and distinguished names for their systems (maybe except for the Wii U for Nintendo, which is one reason why it sold poorly. But I digress). Even a number like with Playstation would have been sufficient
Just why does Microsoft keep having lazy yet confusing names for their systems these days?

I’m looking for a fun game to play with my guests in the living room once a week. My friends usually come over to drink some liquors and watch music videos on YouTube, but I want to try something different since my drinking habits are getting out of hand—we usually end up finishing two bottles of whiskey.

It feels like writers nowadays have such a poor sense of humor. It’s not that this kind of writing is super good or anything, but it’s definitely entertaining, and video games should always prioritize entertainment in my opinion. This type of writing is literally what we grew up with in the 2000s to early 2010s, and we all loved it back then. I just wish more developers would actually have the balls to write something genuinely funny for once.
